Here we go, another random collection of links.
- The Red Sox inked a couple of former closers to minor league deals: Dan Kolb and Dan Miceli. No need to run out and pick them up for your fantasy team. I think Papelbon is secure.
- Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe says the Red Sox are hunting for a lefty bench bat. Tony Clark emailed him to say he'd love a return to Boston, but Cafardo says he's not on the top of the list. Clark hit .207/.265/.291 for the '02 Sox.
- A few comments from Pat Gillick on the Ryan Howard situation. He says the Phillies are "open to anything." Gillick also claimed arbitration hearings really aren't all that contentious. I guess that could be true, I've never been in the room for one.
- The official acquisition of Octavio Dotel meant the White Sox DFA'd David Aardsma. Aardsma, 26, has whiffed about a batter per inning over his last two seasons. He has to have a little bit of trade value.
- Impacto Deportivo says the Mets will meet with Odalis Perez. Two left-handed O. Perez's might confuse opponents, giving the Mets an advantage. Really though it's a good idea for Omar to stockpile some arms even if Odalis doesn't have much left. One thing's for sure, he won't be earning $7.75MM again. (Hat tip to MetsBlog).

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Odds and Ends: Howard, Aardsma, Odalis:
Aardsma struck out something like 30 guys over his first 19 innings in '07, then fell off the table when AL teams figured out: (i) his fastball is straight as an arrow; and (ii) he doesn't throw the slider for strikes effectively.
And here we are. Maybe the Sox can pull a comparable bust, but that's about it. Neal Cotts maybe?

Yeah, Aardsma has little MLB value at this point -- considering his 6.40 ERA last year and career 1.61 WHIP.
There's one team that values pitchers like him -- and they just DFA'd him.

Well said. AAAArdsma is your typical AAAA player...will dominate in the minors and never get it done in the majors. 26 years old and already with his 3rd franchise????I'd say this guy has little value. Sure someone will pick him up, but he never would net you anything in a trade, so best to just DFA him.

If he makes it through to the Jays, I wouldn't mind taking a chance with him. It's already the best bullpen in the league so we don't have to rely on him for anything if it doesn't work out. I think Arnsberg can help him locate his slider. Arnsy has done wonders with the rest of the staff.

Please god, no.
What's wrong with bringing Hinske back??

Why do the Phillies continue to treat Ryan Howard like crap? Just pay the man already! He won the NL ROTY in 2005 in literally half a season and has averaged 52 HRs, 142 RBI with a .290/.408/.621/1.030 line as a full-time player in 2006 and 2007. Why didn't they offer him an extension after his rookie season considering how pricey he's going to get through arbitration?

Zebraheaded, I'm sure Ryan Braun didn't get an extension after his 2007 campaign and he's even more of a "sure thing" than Howard was/is.

Dan Miceli, if you are reading this I just want you to know that I still blame you and Pete Munro for killing the Astros playoff drive in 2004. Why couldnt we have the 2004 playoff offense and the 2005 playoff pitching!
Humor me here, I dont have a playoff berth to look forward to until at least 2013.

O boy. I still remember Tony Clark's first hr in Fenway and thought he might have a good season for the sox. I don't want to go through that horror show again. I'd rather try out some of our prospects before banking on Clark.

I think we should definetely condsider aardsma an asset. I think that if I had a weak bullpen, and I was looking for some depth, I would definetly take a look at aardsma. It is ashame that we can't atleast give him one more chance, because his option is up and he is being passed up by other Sox pitching prospects on the depth chart like Perez,Day,Vasquez. He would a good fit on the astros. Maybe even the d-backs. How about Aardsma for Burke? Both are former top prospects that have not panned out so far. I know Burke was just traded to the d-backs, but they will resign o-dog, and Burke might be able to break out at the cell. As for Aardsma, I think moving out of the AL Central and into the NL would benifet him. He can still reach 99 mph on the gun, and might end up turning into a closer, and replace Velverde, although Pena seems like a better option at the moment. I know I might be streching the potential of these players, but potential is still there.

I've seen Aardsma pitch a few times when he's had his good stuff.. He can be absolutely nasty. There is a chance that the White Sox could regret this move down the road.

Aardsma will more than likely be traded for a Low-A borderline prospect and get an Invite to ST with his new club. He cant hold much value to other teams because he is the epitome of “we have to have someone better in our system we could use than to trade for that guy”.
…I am somewhat on the same page as GoTribe though, and wouldn’t be surprised to see him resurface in a couple years somewhere to find some success (ala Bobby Horwy, but maybe not to that extent)
