Odds and Ends: Estrada, Payton, Kielty

Random rumors from the day...

  • The Bucs are set with their starting five, unless they can trade Matt Morris.  Dejan Kovacevic adds that the Pirates and Johnny Estrada have mutual interest but haven't spoken in a while.
  • Roch Kubatko expects the Orioles to shop Jay Payton now that they've acquired Chris Roberson.  Really, all of their vets should be fully available.
  • Bobby Kielty has interest from three or four teams, but his first choice is Boston.  The likelihood of that increases if Coco Crisp is sent elsewhere.  Kielty is willing to give up switch-hitting if his new team so desires.
  • Troy E. Renck has salary details on Mark Redman and Kip Wells.  Redman gets $1MM, with another possible $500K in incentives.  Wells gets a $3.1MM base with another possible $1.5MM in incentives.

Someone paid Wells 3 mil guaranteed???

Someone pay me $3 mil, and I'll go out and lose 17 games too.

seriously 3 million for wells? lets see he sucked in a pitchers park all year and has the mental toughness of a tv dinner. not to mention the rockies have plenty of starters already. i guess they see that potential? i personally saw kip suck 4 times last year. i would never leave a game early but the thoughts were creeping. one game everyone left so we got to sit first row behind the dugout. too bad it was 10-0 at the time.

forgive my ignorance, but what would be the team's advantage in asking a player to stop switch-hitting? it seems like a switch-hitter would be a valuable commodity for any team, particularly in a versatile bench player, kielty's most likely role.

The orioles are shopping their veterans? Really? This is the first I've heard! I think the orioles would dump payton, millar, hernandez, huff, mora, gibbons for a bag of sunflower seeds by now. The pirates like estrada? Don't they already own a johny estrada? Slow, out of shape, bad on base percentage, bad defensiveley. If this is all th pirates do they'd be better doing nothing.
