« Rockies Not Making Progress With Holliday | Main | Questions For The Mailbag? »
According to Ken Rosenthal, the Tigers have signed starter Nate Robertson to a three-year, $21.25MM deal. The contract buys out two arbitration years and one year of free agency. He could get an extra million bucks in 2010 based on previous innings incentives. I thought this would cost $27MM.
Solid move for the Tigers, given the price of pitching these days. Robertson is 30 years old and he's always good for 30 starts (though he did miss a few starts with a tired arm in the summer of '07). His peripheral stats were respectable despite his 4.76 ERA last year.

I like this move by Detroit. It helps us prepare for the impending departure of the Gambler after this season. We won't have to deal with arbitration and get him at current market value for an extra year. Good job DD.

Yay! And the Tigers make yet another borderline move bumping their payroll further through the roof! Two years of Arb for Nate would’ve cost maybe 10M because, well, he isnt that good to bump it up higher really. In essence they just paid him about 11-12M for his first year of free-agency and ensured his value is even lower if they decide he isnt working out and try to trade him off… At this point, Robertson+Bonderman+Willis could be costing as much as 36M alone for 2010, wonder if they will be able to keep Verlander past 2009 on top of all that…
Just keep adding those cash commitments Detroit, and keep trading your depth for immediate impacts… The other Central teams don’t mind much at all ~ although you would think they would have a pretty good idea what the outcome will be since they watched the WhiteSox so closely the last couple years

Willis' extension drove down the original price of Robertson's extension.

I believe Verlander would be arbitration eligible in 2010. I think that will be his 6th year of service, and after that year, he'd be FA eligible. I may be wrong as I still find arbitration somewhat confusing when looking too far ahead.

Yes, I believe you are correct on Verlander (last Arb in 2010) ~ atleast that is what I was thinking when I posted my first post.
If Verlander is in his last year of Arbitration, then the Tigers would be thinking about extending him before that year starts or trading him rather than risking him walking. With so much invested in Willis/Bonderman/Robertson and so many other key pieces to the offense either leaving or gone already, then it would put them into one of those sticky situations. If they keep Verlander, they don’t get the prospects for him to help the future club and will probably need them because of all of the other three are FA’s after the 2010 season.
The Tigers current team is really setting up to be really strong this and probably next year before hitting hard times because of the amount of contracts ending with little in the minors to replace them with. It will be interesting to watch, looks like they are probably priming themselves for a 1-2 year push then a more rebuild focus again. Might not happen that way, but recent moves kind of point to it…

Don't forget Illitch's Red Wings were the Yankees of the NHL regarding payroll and with the NHL salary cap, he has money burning a whole in his pocket. He will not let salary concerns stop him from making Verlander a Tiger for life and keeping this team together(including a 100 million plus for Miguel).
My only question is what do we do with Renteria after this season? I know BoSox pay his buyout but wonder if they cover 2-3 million if we exercise the option.

For 2010:
Maggs ~ 15M (Option)
Guillen ~ 13M
Willis ~ 12M
Bonderman ~ 12.5M
Inge ~ 6.6M (unneeded player unless somehow the Catcher)
Rick Porcello ~ 1.5M (Option) (if pans out)
Robertson ~ 7M (estimated off his new deal)
M.Cabrera ~ Est 16M
83.6M total if Maggs option picked up (6.6 easily expendable)
Hole at C from Pudge leaving in 09, and new hole at DH, SS, 2B ~ with Verlander possibly being extended or traded prior to season. Willis/Bonderman/Robertson (and even Verlander if nothing is done with him) all FA’s after the year. That’s a lot of cash invested with a ton of holes and everyone possibly leaving in the rotation… Also, the only position players locked up are the easier ones to fill off the FA market most of the time…
Will give you the fact that he might spend freely, but even if he does it isnt looking too hot. Spending freely works great if its around a solid young core, that young core doesn’t seem to be in place so it will be spending to tread water ~ like the ChiSox are doing now…
Like I said, will be interesting watching it all take place…

err, made a couple boo-boos...
add 3-5M onto that est ~ gave the 2nd, not 3rd, year of Robertson to it...
Also forgot to add the fact that a bullpen will be need to be figured in, probably adding another 10M or so if an internal closer is available. And unknown if Cabrera needs to move from 3B ~ Inge would be handy in that case.
