Tigers Still Hope To Sign Miguel Cabrera To Extension

Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press has an article up today in which he tosses around some numbers regarding a possible Miguel Cabrera contract extension.  Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski admitted his desire to sign Cabrera long-term recently.

Morosi expects Cabrera to receive an $11MM contract for '08, if he doesn't sign long-term soon.  Morosi calculates that if Cabrera signed right now, six years and $105MM might be a reasonable amount.  That would be $11MM for '08, $14MM for '09, and $20MM per year thereafter.

By the way, I'm happy to report that Morosi has agreed to answer some questions for our Rumor Royalty series.  Feel free to leave suggestions in the comments.

My question for Morosi is how long to the Tigers expect much from Dontrell Willis in the AL. Or you think they will try to trade him back to the NL?

what I meant to say was How much do the Tigers expect from Willis in the AL. Or will they think about trading him back to the NL? Granted in Tiger Stadium he should be successful, but on the road he may struggle after hitters get used to his delivery.

Dontrelle doesn't even have to be all that effective any more to be worth his money. If he can match Carlos Silva in effectiveness he's already a mild bargin. Anything more is a bonus.

When does Dontrell become a FA? I know in '06 the Marlins decided to go year by year.. so I don't know how long he has. I was under the impression he was a FA after the 09 season but I am not sure.

Willis has agreed to a three-year, $29MM extension with Detroit. The deal buys out one year of free agency. I like it - assuming Willis' elbow checks out, the Tigers paid the innings-eater rate for a guy who could be more than that. And by 2010, can you imagine what the innings eater rate will be?

I found it.. I should have searched this site... for that money... he is worth every penny..

Never mind. Tim you can strike all these posts!

That's actually well below the innings-eater rate, which, by my calculations, was set at 7 years/$126M.

Burn. Eat it, Zito!

Morosi does a good job of covering the Tigers but I think Lynn Henning of the Detroit News is even better.

I hope he holds out until free agency. I know if he had a choice he would rather have been traded to the White Sox. Lets hope if he makes it to free agency that KW can work something out. Hopefully he really wants to play for ozzie as much as I was reading before the trade.

Yeah, anybody would rather be on an old, overpaid, bad, declining, expensive team instead of a young team that should contend for a world series for the next 5 years atleast.

Well living in Chicago I could smell almost smell detroit from here, and it dosen't smell pretty. The tigers have a history of over paying players to come to there team. Remember when Ordonez was a free agent? Nobody would even offer him a 2 year deal and the tigers gave him 5/75, a bigger contract than Vlad at the time. LOL. Pudge got 4/40, and he was one of the last free agents available that offseason because no other team would pay that kind of money, so what do you expect from him. Why would anybody rather play in a giant ghetto of a city when they could play in the greatest city in the world. Most of our players have taken paycuts to stay here. Your team, minus Cabrera, and out team plus cabrera, would make our team division favorites. So I am sure he would rather play for Ozzie Guillen, who is said to be like a father to him, instead of Detriot. The scenerio just sounds to good to be true though. With my luck he will resign with the tigers. But if money wasn't the biggest factor, I am sure he would rather be on the White Sox.

I don't think Cabrera has an offer from the Yankees even though they play in the greatest city in the world. It's funny if Detroit is so terrible why do we have the best NHL and NBA teams right now, along with one of the best teams in baseball, and even the terrible Lions did better than the bears this year. Good job overpaying for Ben Wallace.

LOL. Ill give you Ben Wallace. But The Sox won the series in 05, The Bears were om the Super Bowl last year. You cannot compare to the Bulls dynasty in the 90's. Jordan, the greatest Basketball player of all time. Walter Payton, the greatest football player of all time. The Hawks have been bad. We have 2 baseball teams. Why do all of these college grads from detroit try to come to chicago to work? I think when you are in a position of living in Chicago or Detroit, The average person would live in Chicago. Atleast I would.
