TUESDAY: The Boston Herald has the contract details. Colon gets $1.25MM if he's in the bigs, and the deal can reach $7MM if he makes 30 starts.
SUNDAY: According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, the Red Sox have signed starter Bartolo Colon to a minor league deal. The deal has no guaranteed money. That's a far cry from the guaranteed two-year big league deal Colon wanted at the beginning of the offseason.
Colon will add depth to Boston's rotation, and you certainly have to like the move for the Red Sox. Maybe Colon was motivated by a chance to win or a good medical staff, because Boston seems a poor place to find innings if he's mediocre or worse.

worst comes to worst, you can convert him to long relief like we did with synder, that worked out well.
the sox do have very good medical staffs and farrell might be able to help alittle bit in fine tuning to off speed stuff since there is a good chance the fastballs are far behind him.
no guaranteed money, that doesnt even seem legal lol

Tim,
Do you think Bartolo has anyhthing left in the bag? I know he has been plaqued with injuries the past few seasons. Was this good for the Red Sox?

I think he needs a dietician more than a medical staff. Great pickup for Boston, zero risk for a former ace.

He just doesn't look like he's got anything left. I bet he'll be released before the end of the season. He's got no zip on his fastball and very little movement on his vaunted 2-seamer. He's been leaving the ball up in the zone and gets crushed. If he can't keep the ball in the part in Anaheim, there is no way he'll keep it in the park in Fenway. I think there's a reason why teams like the Pirates passed on him and he's been unable to get anything more than a non-guaranteed contract. I think this move says more about the severity of Schilling's injury and the organization's faith in Tavarez.

If he was any good he wouldn't be battling for a 1 million contract.

I like this signing. A minor league deal is low risk, so if Colon is terrible like he has been, it isnt a big loss on the Red Sox part. If Colon pitches like the Bartolo of old, then the Red Sox are set for this season

As much as I would love for that to happen there is no way it will, youngbuck.
No matter though a million is a drop in the bucket to the Sox.

Ahhh i would of loved the white sox to pick him now hopefully they go after freddy garcia
Posted by: futureprospect3 | February 24, 2008 at 09:36 PM
low risk for someone that could do good things. If nothing else a middle inning eater. Lots of worse pitchers to me to pick up. Look to see the Sox make 1-2 more move soon. Things (with the exception of Schill) seem to be looking good. Would be happy to see Curt sit till the final 6-8 weeks anyway just to get ready for the post season. Think it will force some of the young guns to put up.

Now that some of the starters are coming off the board...any ideas where Kyle Lohse is going?

The reports of how awful he has looked this off-season must be true. For him to settle for a minor league contract is amazing. We don't have to go back but a few months when people where suggesting a 2/10 deal would be a minimum amount.

Eh, it's a cheap reclamation project, relatively. Worst case scenario: he languishes in AAA, makes a few emergency starts, and plays a role of mentor for young up and comers like Justin Masterson and Michael Bowden. Best case: he solidifies the back of the rotation in case of injury. Dream case: he looks like the young Indians ace of so long ago. Note I wouldn't bet on the last possibility, it'd be easier to burn my money.
Seems like the Sox are simply taking the lessons of the 06 season seriously, you can never have too much pitching.

If Bartolo Colon makes starts for the Red Sox this season, then that is indeed a worst case scenario. And you really want a fat, lazy toad who couldn't do enough to get even the Pirates to sign him to play mentor to young prospects?
I would be surprised if Colon is not released by the end of Spring Training.

I hope bartolo has some gas left he was once great.
This just makes me think that the reds should sign garcia..i'm not sure fogg and affeldt are enough

The people most happy about this have to be the Yankees' hitters, since they use Colon as their own personal batting practice pitcher. It's amazing how fast and far Colon has fallen. Two seasons removed from a Cy (however undeserved it was) and now he's signing a minor-league contract. I find the line "plays a role of mentor for young up and comers like Justin Masterson and Michael Bowden" to be absolutely hilarious. Hopefully he doesn't teach them to eat until their uniforms split and totally dismiss any type of conditioning.

Street for Crisp, Lowrie, Masterson/Delcarmen?
Posted by: maximumpotential | February 25, 2008 at 02:32 AM
This move excited me because, it shows that the owners and GMs have decided not to pay ridiculous amounts of money for worthless pitchers. (legally of course)
Now all the Reds need to do is go sign Loshe to a 2 year 16 million dollar deal.
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | February 25, 2008 at 07:41 AM
Why would the Sox give all that up for Street?
Posted by: walkoffblast | February 25, 2008 at 01:06 PM
It's a good signing as no money is guaranteed to him but how effective can he be now that his fastballs can only go about mid-high 80's? time will tell
Posted by: k1ngJoba | February 25, 2008 at 03:03 PM
30 starts, wtf? they actually pondered he could make that many starts, how silly!!
Posted by: 04Forever | February 26, 2008 at 02:38 PM
Nope, they sure didnt...Colon did though, so he wanted it in there...everyone in Boston knows colon has no chance at 30 starts...haha

"The people most happy about this have to be the Yankees' hitters"
Or restaurant owners in Boston.
Posted by: themfightnwords | February 26, 2008 at 03:07 PM
If by "Yankee hitters", you of course mean the ones in Scranton then sure.
Posted by: peterherman | February 26, 2008 at 04:00 PM
i keep hearing that colon has no guaranteed money.from what i read if he makes the team out of spring training he gets 1.25 million guaranteed but nothing guaranteed untill that happens.if he gets 30 starts wich he won't he gets up to 7 million dollars.
