« Cubs/Brian Roberts Update | Main | Erik Bedard Rumors »
Another one of baseball's top young lefties is about to be traded. Last week it was Johan Santana. This week it appears as if Erik Bedard is going to be traded to the Mariners for Adam Jones, a relief pitcher and three top pitching prospects. Despite rumors of a completed deal over a week ago, and worries that Peter Angelos might kill the deal, reports appear to indicate that the trade could be finalized. Any. Minute. Now. But before the deal is completed, let's take a look at reactions to the Bedard trade from the blogosphere.

Poor Orioles. Atleast they still have Markakis.

Poor Markakis...

Good deal for the future of the Orioles. They wouldn't be any good for the rest of Bedard's contract anyway.

I don't know. Gutherie and Lowen were both below 4ERA last year and are young...proably getting better. Their bullpen is deep and super solid. The run support could be rough, they have a few 20+ HRs hitters, several .275+ hitters. Roberts, Jones, Markakis then add Mora, Scott, Huff and you have a decent little tandem? Cabera is far overdue and perhaps he finally figures it out? Im not saying that they are contenders but any means, but I think this 90 game loss season could be debateable... Their bullpen is very very very deep and very very solid. Sherill, Bradford, Walker are lights out, Albers add Patton add Burress add Safarte who all are either going to be decent to really good long relievers, maybe a starter or two? Add Garrett Olson, Liz, and the rest... If the very least they could turn a few heads, start playing as a team, and give some really good teams some really tough games?

Loewen is a potential future #1. Guthrie can be that too. He pitched excellent last year and showed excellent peripherals that suggested that it wasn't luck or an illusion. Those 2, the enigma of Cabrera, and the deepening pitching of the system made it possible to trade Bedard. MacPhail said that an old baseball adage is that you need 20 pitching prospects to fill out a 5-man ML rotation. Based on that and that the Orioles had a 3rd consecutive strong draft, the Os are stocked at nearly every level this season. Position player-wise they could do better but it is an under-rated system.
After the Bedard trade I think the Orioles might be able to claim a Top 10 farm system ranking.

Baltimore's bullpen is "very, very solid?" I'm not trying to bash the Orioles, but I thought the Orioles had one of the worst, if not THE worst, bullpens in the majors last year.

Yeah I think that "solid bullpen" statement could stand to lose a "very" or two...
