« Fogg Still Looking For Work | Main | Shannon Stewart Switches Agents »
Every year some free agent unexpectedly finds himself without a job in late February. This year, that guy is Josh Fogg. To rejoin the Rockies, Fogg would have to take a pay cut from his '07 salary of $3.625MM, and he'd have to be open to bullpen work.
Will anyone take Fogg in for $4MM and give him a rotation spot? The Nationals, Reds, Astros, and Cardinals seem like viable options. Viva El Birdos isn't thrilled with the Cardinals' portrayal of Matt Clement's health. Since Clement won't be ready for the start of the season, maybe St. Louis will add some depth with Fogg. However, John Mozeliak implied a couple of days ago that he wasn't going to make anymore acquisitions.

I'm more surprised about Lohse than Fogg.

I hope he goes to the Astros, we could really use him. And they got the extra money now that they won arbritation with Valverde and hopefully Loretta today..

Josh Fogg is not very good. 5 straight seasons of 1.45+ WHIP and a bad K/9 and even worse K/BB.
Ed Wade said a few days back they were pretty much done with aquisitions. The Astros have about 5 other guys who can post his numbers and do it on the cheap.

Mo made that statement before Sunday, when they pushed back Clement's routine. I would be surprised if they didn't get Weaver or Fogg.

Mozeliak had to know about Clement prior to Sunday.

While the Astros have a little extra cash with winning (potential) arb cases, I doubt they'd do anything with camp open until they see what they got.
If no-one's grabbing that last rotation spot (Paulino's my favorite) or of there's an injury to a starter, I could see the Astros doing something in late spring.

fogg definitely surprises me more than lohse. teams seem very willing to take on cheaper, older, injury rehab type pitchers this offseason (think benson, prior, clement, etc.). that no one has snatched up fogg for the same type of role surprises me more than the fact that no one wants/needs to pay lohse a huge multiyear contract. it seems there would be someone to pay top dollar for an innings eater (the mariners did it with silva), but most teams are more willing to take a one or two year risk on a reclamation project like fogg than give a big four or five year deal to lohse. lohse is definitely more talented, but fogg seems like a better risk/reward option for an owner's money.

For the Astros, I would prefer Chacon to Fogg. Fogg isn't a better pitcher than Chacon, and Chacon is a better candidate for the bullpen if he can't make the rotation. Wade said he made an offer to Chacon and I hope it works out.
The GMs' reaction to the free agent pitching market is interesting. If I were an agent--and even a bit paranoid--I might suspect some form of collusion. In any event, all of the teams seem to have taken a "wait and see" approach to the market in order to drive prices down. It may come down to "who blinks first."
As for Lohse, I think he is the best pitcher on the market. But Boras is his agent, so you figure that he will be a guy who may be willing to wait for the right offer. I wish the Astros would consider him, but I can't see the Astros matching up with Boras.

i think the astros make sense for a lot of the remaining free agents. has anyone seen their projected rotation as of today? its oswalt and the scrubs. the cardinals could sign someone else but mozeliak and ownership think we have a competitive team right now. the cards dont but seriously fogg, lohse, or anyone else available isnt going to make the difference. i like the cards bringing back weaver. the astros should just sign everybody left and hope
