« Giants Make Offer To Kim | Main | 10 Spring Training Trade Candidates »
According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants offered a minor league deal to free agent Byung-Hyun Kim. Schulman's source believes Kim is holding out for a big league deal. Gutsy move, for a guy who posted a 6.08 ERA last year.
The following hurlers had to settle for minor league deals: Tony Armas Jr., Kris Benson, Brendan Donnelly, Jorge Julio, Rudy Seanez, and Steve Trachsel. It's hard to see where Kim is coming from, if the Schulman report is accurate. You'd think Kim would just be anxious to get to camp and start working. In his defense, he is 29 and whiffed 107 in 118.1 innings last year.

This move would help the Giants how? Maybe a Giants fan can clue me in on what Sabean's thinking here.

I'm not a Giants fan, but a minor league deal means there is literally ZERO risk. So why not sign him? If he improves his control back to his earlier days, he can still be an effective starter or late-inning reliever. If he can't recover his control, then he is still extremely effective at getting righties out and can be used as a situational reliever. Or cut, because a minor league deal means no risk.
I never understand why people complain about minor league deals. Even a major league deal for close to the minimum would be worth the risk. Kim did OK for Florida last year, but he got rocked when he moved to AZ and that really killed his ERA.

This move makes no sense...
We have a starting 5 of
Zito
Cain
Lowry
Lincecum
Correia
This easily gives us on of the deepest rotations in the West.
We also have Sanchez and Hennessey that can start.

What mymrbig said. This is a great move, all the more impressive because of how stupid Sabean's signings and trades have been. I think his last smart move may have been the Ellis Burks deal.
Kim threw 100 bad innings for FL, sure. For 200 IP that will be just as bad, Livan Hernandez will get at least $5m this year.
For all Kim's flaws, he's a better bet than Hernandez. Despite sucking, he kept his K rate above 20% last year. If he can regain control, his ERA will dip and he could be a nice little commodity at the deadline.
This is the kind of move Sabean should have been making for the last decade, not drafting 'character' instead of hitting or signing decrepit, overpriced hackers to fill his lineups.

He's asking a lot for a guy who seems to give up as many home runs as he strikes out. I guess he's still riding that 15-strikeout Olympic performance.

I makes sense because it’s a minor league deal. The upside is Kim as been fairly decent vs. RHB which can be useful at Mays Field. It’s interesting to note 70% of his homers given up last year were to LHB. Right field in San Francisco should help a bit with that.
If Kim was to round into form enough to be considered 5th starter material he would be “competing” against the right handed starters the Giants have in AAA of Begg ( age 28) , Palmer ( age 28) & Sun-Woo Kim ( age 30) for a Corriea insurance policy. Only Sun-Woo has any MLB time between the later 3. Over all it’s a solid move but nothing to be excited about.

I'm pretty excited, but all in context.
Compare:
- signing Rowand for a zillion dollars to play decent defense and hit a little -- on a team with two center fielders (Roberts, Winn)
- signing Zito; 'Nuff sed
- signing Benitez
- trading for Pierzynski
- probably trading for Crede (who is, in the best of all possible worlds, Pedro Feliz)
No, this is a great move from a total idiot. A few more of these, and no more idiotic Zito/Rowand/Crede deals, and I'll have higher standards.

This makes it even more likely that Sox will get two starters for Crede. IF and this is a bugger if now than ever he's actually traded.
There's still Inge and Chavez out there for what's probably a cheaper price.

'Sox will get two starters for Crede?' Even Sabean's not that stupid.
Of course, every time I tell myself 'even Sabean's not that stupid,' he turns around and does something even more ludicrous than I had feared. Having said the same now likely means he's going to deal three adequate arms for the reanimated corpse of Brandon Inge.
Cheese on crows, Sabean is an idiot.
