« Long-Term Deal For Felix Hernandez? | Main | Brian Roberts Auditions For Cubs' Scouts »
SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that the Tigers and Miguel Cabrera's agent have "begun to talk" about a long-term deal. Heyman believes a deal could be hammered out fairly quickly given the nice fit with Detroit for Cabrera. Heyman doesn't have inside info on the years or amount, but got Cabrera to admit that ten years, $200MM sounded about right.
Would an extension start with 2009, Cabrera's last arbitration year? I imagine so, though maybe the ten years would start with 2010. Regardless, Cabrera's level of production is truly worth $20MM annually into the forseeable future. Doesn't hurt that he's gotten into shape a bit, either.

10 year is ridiculous but if anyone can "earn" it for the forseeable future it'd be him I guess. Technically he's not even entered his prime, which is a scary thought. I don't put much hype into the "best shape of his life" talk. Hopefully for him and Detroit he can stay in shape even after a big contract.

I'd put a weight clause in there before I made a 10 year deal.

I agree with that caliber of ultra long-term deal for Cabrera. This guy is phenomenal, and will be worth every cent to the both the Tiger's bottom line and their future playoff prosperities.

You have to figure with inflation and the trend of mega-contracts just going higher and higher that 20 million in years 6-10 will be worth it, even if he declines some towards the end.

10 years scares the daylight outta me (I'm a life-long Tiger fan). But, Detroit and Dombrowski have been smart about clauses with players in recent history (Rodriguez and Ordonez) so I'm sure DD would ink something in there about "not ballooning from 185 to 255 again."

If you have to do a 10 year deal Miggy is the guy to do it on. I also think 10/200 is a minimal contract.
Absolutely need to include clauses around weight and health.
If he stays in shape and remains healthy $20m/year will seem like a steal.

I've watched him balloon over the past couple of years from about 10 rows up, and he is *not* someone to invest that kind of money in. Questionable dedication, and lethargic play. Sure he can hit, but 20m/yr, no way. I'm really thankful the Mets didn't dump money on him.

overpayment is a relative term to how much other teams are over paying other players. IE: you may as well overpay for the premium talent. And also, players get what the market bears, mroe or less.....this kid could be a very good hitter for a very long time.
