No Market For Reed Johnson

According to a source of Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail, the market for left fielder Reed Johnson is "non-existent."  This is not a big surprise - Johnson was a candidate to be non-tendered this winter.  He had back surgery in April and is set to earn $3.27MM in '08.

Blair speculates that the Jays may be inclined to listen to offers for Adam Lind.  Back in November, ESPN's Keith Law had this to say about Lind:

Lind has a classic left-hander's swing and good hand-eye coordination. His power is fringe-average but projects to above-average. He's best suited to play first base, but it's possible to live with his defense in left because of how he'll hit.

Hey, he's right-handed and cheaper to acquire than Marlon Byrd. How ugly is he in center?

He's actually very good defensively and can play CF probably pretty well. That's what makes him underrated.

But I don't see how Lind is expendable unless the return is equal. The Jays just let him brew in AAA and call him up when injuries strike, and he'll definitely have a job at DH/LF next year. Lind won't be traded unless its for an equal return.

Johnson is a good player when used in a platoon, so if he's healthy and hits career norms and Stairs does well then it should be fine. He can also be bought out if Shanon Stewart is better.

So what are the Jays' needs?

I dunno...why would Law say that stuff about his defense if the opposite were true? I'm sure he's seen Lind play.

The Jays need to pull off a 'McGriff/Fernandez for Alomar/Carter' kind of trade.

A power leftie bat would be the biggest need. It's a fairly righty dominated lineup and we could deal with a respectable leftie in the rotation.

I think the Jays should just wait for Snyder come up or sign Adam Dunn for a short contract next season. Then, if Burnett walks, a hole and a need arises for that leftie starter. I mean a real starter... Chacin may smell good, but his numbers stink.

I'm smellin a midseason trade though. A solid first half from Johnson would raise his value from 'non existant' to 'add on'.

Like every MLB team the Jay's needs are primarily in the pitching Department.

They could use a bonifide 4th or 5th starter to solidify their rotation so they do not have to use Casey Janssen which will weaken their bullpen.

It would be nice to see J.P. Riccardi pursue Blanton or Rich Harden from the A's given his connection there and the fact that both of these guys have arbitration years which would soften the blow if A.J. Burnett leaves after this year.

Oh my first comment about defense was Reed Johnson. Sorry didn't phrase that paragraph well. Reed's D in CF is good....Lind is NOT a CF at all. His D in LF was very much improved...he's passable.

trade for a power lefty bat? why not sign barry bonds.

also why would reed's value be there ever. lofton, corey patterson, bonds, etc. are still on the market...corner OF are not hard to get, and Reed is a below average hitting LF, so even without injury concerns shouldn't have much value (and a 3 million salary). I still think he's a useful player if healthy though...

Would you guys rather dump Johnson on another team or keep him?

Also I may as well give my scouting report on Lind since I saw him play everyday in the majors last year. In the OF he doesn't get quick starts on balls, he's not that quick, but he showed more athleticism in his diving attempts several times. He did look a little shaky, but he could improve. Hitting wise the power is there for 20 to 30 homers, but he has never walked that much in his career and thus has middling plate discipline. He's no star, but I think he's a safe bet to be a GOOD hitter for a few years, and be cheap while he's at it.

jrfukudome...it depends on how he plays in ST, but its sort of a draw between him and shannon stewart, but id rather have his versatility if he's healthy.

I don't get how teams can give up on their guys so quickly (talking about Lind here). The guy averages .317/.378/.506 in the minors and is all of 24 and they're ready to cut bait after 350 MLB at-bats? Mystifying, particularly since Overbay couldn't even muster a .400 SLG at 1B last year.

Do you seriously think they are 'giving up on him?'...it's just tough to make room when you sign Matt Stairs for 800k and he puts up an OPS 50 points better than Manny Ramirez.

Lind will get his chance, the Jays have always been very smart with their youngsters.

Matt Stairs doesn't explain why Overbay's carcass started 119 games at 1B last year.

Wasn't Keith Law with the Blue Jays organization when they drafted Lind? I think he would have a pretty good idea of his defensive capabilities, he usually seems to favor players he drafted look how high Travis Snider is in his top 100 prospects. Law thinks that Snider could play right but with Rios and Wells he will play left or first the same positions as Lind making him expendable with Snider's ETA of next year.

Bourne Identities:

Overbay was injured all season long, playing with pins in his hand for most of the year. The pain was nearly unbearable.

The three seasons before 2007, he averaged about .300-.375-480 with 20 homers and 45 doubles. That's about what everyone is expecting from him.

I really don't see why the Jays would need to Trade Lind.

Seems like Riccardi was fine with trading Rios, and having Lind and Snider in waiting to take over the corner spots.

Lind is a great hitter and i know they wil try and get him some at bats this year. But, if they do trade him, they will trade him (hopefully) for a 4star prospect at the very least.

Hopefully Elvis Andrus ! hahaha .. if only

Tim, I think the confusion about Lind's defense stems from the fact that he was initially pegged as being an AWFUL defensive OF, and when he came up to Toronto last April, it turned out he was passable. But that's about it. And don't forget, while he was up here, the bar for comparison was Matt Stairs.

Those two factors, I think, to a lot of minds made him seem a little better than he really is. Law's probably got it right, but like I say, it's at least passable. We're not talking Barry or Manny here-- in any sense.

Oh, and I think this is getting a little overblown. All Blair said was that JP now "might listen". I don't think Lind is being shopped.

I'd still Lind will be in LF in 2009, and in 2010 Frank Thomas will be gone, Snider will be ready, and Lind and Snider split LF and DH.

Hmmm... I'd love to be able to go back and edit my comments...

seems like the Giants would be a good fit for Lind, they could use a young bat at 1B, not sure what they give up.

How about Baltimore? Or better still, a three way Cubs-Baltimore-Toronto trade with Roberts going to the Cubs, Lind going to Baltimore, and pitching to the Blue Jays?

To Oakland:
Adam Lind/David Purcey/Curtis Thigpen/ mid-level prospect

To Toronto:
Rich Harden or Joe Blanton

i wouldnt give that much for Harden but Blanton maybe

"Adam Lind/David Purcey/Curtis Thigpen/ mid-level prospect"

For Harden ??? haha, we already have a Harden and his name is AJ Burnett.

Im sure all it would take to get Harden and the 30 innings he will pitch this year, would be Thigpen.

For Blanton though, now that could work.

I think the Twins should trade for Reed Johnson to play center, who actually thinks that Gomez is ready to take over centerfield in Minnesota
