Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe quotes Scott Boras as saying that the Red Sox would have to come to him about an extension for Jason Varitek. Boras and Varitek are open to a deal, but I guess they don't want to sound desperate and give up their leverage.
Tek turns 36 in April; the Red Sox are going to want to minimize their risk. They could roll the dice in hopes of signing him after the season, as they did with Mike Lowell and Curt Schilling. It can be tough to measure the value of a catcher, but Baseball Prospectus has Varitek worth $4.6MM in '09 and dropping off significantly after that.

Varitek is already in decline, and figures to decline precipitously at some point.
Boras figures to sit back, and Theo figures to sit back. Unless Varitek has a career year a la Posada, this isn't likely to end in a long term big $$ contract.
Varitek may end up a Boras gypsy, pinch hitting in the NL West for trivial money after an unemployed spring of 2009.

Sounds like Johjima will be the Red Sox catcher in 09.
Having Boras as your agent is only advantageous if your a player that everyone wants.
Poor Tek, he seems like a good guy, and he'll be embarrased after this year when no one wants him or Boras convinces him to turn down the Red Sox's 2year extension offer.

As good a guy as Varitek is for this team, and as much as he means to them, Red Sox management should not extend him. There is simply not enough left in the tank, and would be wise to move on after this year.
