« Orioles Sign Alex Cintron | Main | Kielty Stays With Red Sox »
According to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves have signed Scott Spiezio to a minor league deal. Spiezio, 35, hit .269/.354/.386 in 223 ABs for the Cardinals last year.
Spiezio was released by the Cards in February when they learned of his arrest warrant related to a drunk-driving incident in December. The Cardinals paid him $2.4MM to go away.

Good signing. He can be a good bench player if he makes it back up.

Good sign, I think, but kinda against the Braves normal operating standards. They generally don't sign players with this kind of baggage.

I was surprised that the Braves, a pretty respected organization, were willing to give Spiezio a contract. Obviously its only a minor league deal so it won't cost them really much money. He could turn out to be a pretty good bench option. This shouldn't conclude their search for a quality bench bat though.

The only way this is going to work out for the Braves is if they have a minor league team in the Prison League.

Well he won't have to change the color of his goatee much.

and we all know there's no crime in atlanta...right?

As long as he doesn't pull a Vick I think he will be ok.

hahaha, this really doesn't help the case against collusion in the case of Bonds.
If this guy can get drunk, crash his car into a some people, and then drive away and still get a spot on the team, why not Bonds ?
Ohhh, because Bonds is a jerk thats why, haha this is awesome.

I believe the reports said he crashed his car into a fence after swerving it all over the road in the wrong lane and over a median. Then after he crashed into the fence he ran away to his buddy's condo where he proceeded to vomit in his bedroom. So when Spiezio's buddy got mad about it, ol' Speez started choking him and throwing him onto the wall. Then his friend had enough and called the police.....hilarious.

"Ohhh, because Bonds is a jerk thats why, haha this is awesome." Just stupid. Bonds juiced, everyone knows it... that's why.
Posted by: SirScore | March 31, 2008 at 11:36 PM
Thats right SirScore, Bonds is left without a job because he was the only one in the leauge juicing. Because anyone who juiced is unemployed eh?
Good thing Miguel Tejada isn't a jerk or else he would be out of a job too.
Thats all i got to say
Posted by: BaseBallz | March 31, 2008 at 11:49 PM
SirScore, so why are Brian Roberts, Jack Cust, and even my beloved Andy Pettite still employed if it's only about who juiced? Bonds and Sosa are being blackballed because they're the "poster boys" for steroids. Period. Either of them would make PERFECT sense for Seattle (I mean c'mon, Vidro at DH?), and Sosa would fit nicely with the Mets. But noone wants them why? BLACKBALLED. That's why. Steroids are not as bad as what Spiezio did, or Brett Meyers, or Elijah Dukes. Especially since when Bonds and everyone else did the 'roids, THERE WAS NO RULE IN MLB SAYING THEY COULDN'T!
There is NO DOUBT Bud Selig is behind this. He made his feelings clear last year when Bonds was approaching #756, and proved how corrupt he is with his "handling" of Palmerio's failed drug test.

The reason that Bonds doesnt have a job and all those other juicers do is that Bonds REPRESENTED the steroid era. The first name that comes to mind when you think steroids is Barry Bonds, and its sad, but no one wants to have anything to do with him because of it...... well maybe its not THAT sad, but still.

Why is everyone making it that complicated? Bonds would require a ML-deal. Spiezio was willing/had to accept a MiL-deal. There's no collusion, or at least this isn't evidence of it.

They mentioned this during the game last night, and said that Frank Wren spoke to Spiezio himself and got his personal assurance that the trouble was behind him. Scott even made a public apology to everyone he affected during the "incident." This seems to indicate he'll be cut like a kite string the second any trouble arises (and that nobody on the team will invite him to parties). I don't mind the signing as long as it's conditional.
As for Bonds, he's a jerk with an army of media behind following him, he can barely play defense, and he's always hurt. Steroids aren't the problem here.

YOU ALL MISSED THE POINT...
Kelly Johnson is probably hurt worse than they are telling us!

Braves have no pop on their bench. Spiezio could be an upgrade. However, he first needs to prove himself in Richmond. If he falters, he will never wear a Atlanta Braves uniform. It all depends on how well he does playing for Richmond the next 2 weeks or so. Regarding Kelly Johnson, he has a sore right knee. I won't be surprised if he's back in the lineup by Thursday. Braves need his bat in the lineup. Prado & Gotay are not everyday players. When Infante comes off the DL, Prado will likely be sent down.

Prado hit .313 in 491 combined plate appearances last year (most of it at AAA Richmond). I think he could be very effective as an everyday player.
The union can allege collusion all it wants. Bonds isn't signed because he sucks defensively and can't play 1B, would probably still cost over $6M, and has a TON of baggage. If he were willing to take a bench role, someone might consider signing him for a million or so.

Braves never saw Prado as an everyday player. He has no power & average speed. His future in MLB is as a utility player. He still needs more seasoning at SS if he wants to be a decent one.
