« No Recent Brian Roberts Talks | Main | Injuries May Revive Inge To Dodgers Talk »
The Jim Edmonds Implosion Watch is on in San Diego. The centerfielder is on the shelf until the end of the month with a strained calf muscle, suffered in Thursday's spring game.
Just a little more impetus for the Pads to get a deal done for an outfielder. Kevin Towers, though, says not so fast. He'll wait a week or so to see how Edmonds is progressing before pulling the trigger on any trades. Edmonds, who's in the last year of a two-year deal he signed with the Cardinals, will make $8MM this season. He's missed 97 games over the last two years with a variety of aches and pains.
The strain may be worse than the one Edmonds suffered in 2003, causing him to miss significant playing time. Towers and Theo Epstein chatted yesterday over email, though Coco Crisp is seen as a long shot. Towers says Boston can't have either Chase Headley or Matt Antonelli.

Angel Pagan for Heath Bell? *wink*
I wouldn't mind the Mets trading Pagan for like Joe Thatcher -- if the Pads would even do that (I wouldn't).

The Cubs got two fringe, non top 30 prospects for Pagan -- and most of us were happy with it. In New York, you will find that Pagan loses more games with his mistake prone, absent-minded play then he wins with his physical tools. The Cubs need a RH hitting CF - which Pagan can provide - but the Cubs willingly gave up Pagan for nothing. That should tell you something about his value.

being one of the greatest cardinals dont you think they would have kept him if he was still worth something? in 05 he was great but since then even when healthy he just cant do it anymore, and most of the time hes not even healthy. for sentimental reasons i thought the cards should have kept him, but from a baseball perspective im glad they didnt. he really is finished

Crisp for Headley or Antonelli??? Ha! Good for Kevin Towers. He's a pretty smart guy for shunning that deal. Let Boston sit on Crisp for a while. That price is going to start to plummet.

Now is the time for the Giants to pounce and ship off someone like Dave Roberts or Randy Winn

Frankly I'm surprised Boston would even ask for Antonelli or Headley, both would be blocked. Admittedly you could move one to left if no Manny, but still.

Juan Pierre anyone?
Posted by: dusto | March 08, 2008 at 11:39 AM
Juan Pierre - hell no, too weak
Dave Roberts - can't play CF in Petco
Coco Crisp - an idea but if the red sox only want our two best prospects, screw em.
Reggie Willits/Nathan Haynes from the Angels would be the best option

Crisp for Headley made sense for both teams early in the offseason before the Sox resigned Lowell. Kevin Towers was intelligent and held of it. Now he can get Crisp for pennies on the dollar.
Maybe something along the lines of Crisp for Kyle Blanks & Joe Thatcher works for both parties. Blanks is blocked at 1B, has no future position flexibility, and hasn't played above A ball.

Maybe the Pads go for Marlon Byrd?
Posted by: Bleacher_Buddha | March 08, 2008 at 11:42 AM
Byrd might/should be available for cheap. Once JD gets off the crack pipe and realizes his demands for a Murton-level player are unrealistic, maybe a deal is realistically possible. Since we're rebuilding, we'd probably/should settle for a 2nd-tier AA or A-level pitching prospect or two.

So the Padres and Mets are looking for outfield help. One could make the case that the Cubs might be too. Surely that creates a market for guys like Nady, Byrd, Winn, Payton, Huff or the multiple Angel options (Haynes, Evans, Rivera, Willits, etc.). Even Lofton has to start looking viable. I could probably come up with a list of another half dozen too.
There's always guys who are surplus toward the end of spring training; is that what everyone is waiting for?

By the way, Padre fans should take note:
Edmonds slugging percentage when he DIDN'T strike out:
.920 in 2004
.759 in 2005
.663 in 2006
.507 in 2007
Make your own conclusions.

How about sending Callix Crabbe to the Cubs for Eric Patterson?
A centerfielder with some pop and good upside potential.

“Padres SHOULD move Kouz to LF, leave Headley at 3B, sign Lofton. Allows Giles to move down instead of lead-off. Can Harrison play CF?”
Kouz being a mainstay and needed bat in the lineup, its best not to have him moving around like that. If Headley was to need to be sent down then you have Kouz forced to make an inseason position change which would probably take away from his plate production. Its best to keep him where he is until Headley shows he deserves to be up ~ then you think about this...
