Cubs Sign Reed Johnson

1:48pm: The Chicago Tribune says the deal is for $1.3MM.  BP's Nate Silver weighs in on the move here.

12:35pm: Levine now reports that the Cubs have signed Johnson.  For a team focused on winning now, it's not a bad move.  Only drawback might be the Murton situation.  Meanwhile, Evan Grant says the Rangers reduced their demands for Marlon Byrd but the Cubs still decided to pass.

11:41am: It's all Reed Johnson, all the time here at MLBTR.  Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000 says the Cubs will make a contract offer to Johnson once he clears waivers about twenty minutes from now.  Cubs GM Jim Hendry has already been in contact with Arn Tellem, Johnson's agent.  Matt Murton might be the odd man out if the Cubs complete the signing.  I'll update this post if more info rolls in today.

as a cub fan i understand the signing. but, dear lord do i feel bad for matty murton. the guy is straight up class. don't do this to him cubbies! if we do let him go, i hope we give him to the mets so he can jack one against us and send THEM to the world series.

wow...rumors have been reduced to the likes of Reed Johnson...LOL

JUST SIGN HIM DAMNIT!!

I won't even go into the reasons why signing Johnson makes more sense than nearly any trade they can make, because I've already listed those reasons like ten times. Just sign him and let him back up Pie it makes so much sense

Serisously, msk86? Matt Murton? He's a nice guy, but come on! You're treating him like he's the next Willie Mays! Where do you want him to play? Would you want him to take over for Soriano in left? Or rather Fukudome in right? He doesn't have a position. Why not let him go somewhere where he can play? Why let him sit at the end of the bench, when they can get someone that they can actually use? Murton's decent, but he's only gonna drag down the Cubs.

The only reason the cubs are sigining him is beacuse they dont have to give up any players for him. And yes, Unfortunally matt murton is now expandable. (im a fan) Now dont be surprized hearing/ reading rumors about murton in the mix to Baltimote for roberts!

I can definitely see why Hendry wants to sign him. But a couple concerns I have are that Johnson has not really proven himself as a solid center fielder, so do we want this as our backup to Pie or should we just give up a prospect to get a trade done (but I understand that it may never actually happen). And I hate to get rid of Murton. Really, what are the odds that we get through the season without needing Matt to start for an injured player? Also, Matt is only 26 and had a solid 2006 season when he could start every day and had an somewhat off-season last season when forced to platoon. Unless, we can get him somewhere where he knows he will start every day. If he is going to platoon anyways, I would rather keep him as our 4th. Regardless, if Matt is the odd man out, I want to agree with msk86, Murton is a class act and one heck of a nice guy with the fans.

I like Matt too, but this signing would have no impact on him. Murton was on his way out anyway. He cant play CF and there is no room to carry 5 outfielders, especially when you have versitile guys like DeRosa.

I am all for adding Johnson as insurance for Pie, but with the solid look of this lineup, bat Pie 8th everyday and let him play through any minor slumps he may go through. It is time to give Pie the job and a little confidence.

jneely, i didn't say he should start. i just said he was a great guy and deserves a spot on the team. and how is he dragging them down? give me one example of when matt "dragged" the cubs down. what you're doing in is bringing in scraps from the freaking BLUE JAYS and knocking off a decent player from the cubs. don't get on my case for having faith in our own players. if you're such a johnson supporter, move your ass to canada.

I don't get why every Cub fan has a crush on Matt Murton. I'm a Cubs fan as well but even I realize that he has no fit on this team and his talents are simply being wasted. I'm not gonna boo hoo hoo about the fact that he wont play. I mean yeah he's been pretty good when he's played but its not like he was Ryan Braun-ing it up either. Murton just can't play center and thats what the Cubs need right now

This wouldn't effect the ROberts deal at all. The O's have 0 use for Murton as well, they've got a surplus of outfielders, and young ones at that.

If anything, Cub fans that like Murton should be happy if he gets traded, he'll at least get a shot to play somewhere. Plus, we'll get something usefull for him, too.

msk86,

Do you really like Murton so much that you want to see him hit a HR off us to send the Mets to the Series? Dude, really? You are either A) Not a real Cub fan, or B) Sleeping with Murton. Either way, I believe you should walk away from the keyboard for about an hour and think about what you have said today. Consider it your time out.

msk86, If Murton could play center field they would keep him. But he can't. He is below average in the corners. Let him go somewhere, where he can platoon and have a good year.

And I agree with Cub4life concerning that crack about the Mets.

Murton won't be the odd man out, Cedeno will.

Cubs likely 13 position players who make the roster:

Soto
Blanco

DLee
DeRosa
Theriot
ARamirez
Fontenot

Soriano
Pie
Fukudome
Murton
D Ward
Reed Johnson if signed or another CF type

They might decide to keep Cedeno over Fontenot since Cedeno is out of options and Fontenot has some left, but Cedeno has been shopped and his hot bat should make it easier to trade him. Despite his talent he's brain dead and needs to go.

Murton will stick with the team because of Soriano's health and Fukudome's struggles. They need an outfielder who can play everday if needed, and Johnson could be getting a lot of time in CF.

That roster gives them 3 righties off the bench and 2 lefties. Cedeno would make it 4 righties and 1 lefty, another reason Fontenot should be the choice.

Is this guy any good?

Reed Johnson hits 100 points higher in night games vs day games for what its worth.

Murton’s value to the Cubs is unfortunately very low. He’s a good right-handed bat off the bench on a team dominated with right-handed hitters. That would be perfectly fine if he could play CF but he can’t. The best thing for Murton is to land on a team that isn’t expected to contend. He can start in that situation and have a chance to show his worth. On a contending team he’s no better than a 4th outfielder and would find himself in a similar situation as he would with the Cubs. If a team like the Royals can start Teahen all year, surely there’s another non-contender that could use Murton in the lineup everyday. I hope it happens and I hope he disproves the general consensus that he’s a 4th OF or fringe starter

Murton for Royce Ring. I don't care if its fair, or if either team needs either player I just want to see Ring trot out of the cubs BP with ring of fire blasting in the stadium. Nice signing - would rather him than Byrd anyways - Pie will be everyday CF since I don't think Johnson is an everyday CF'er but nice to have every now and then

Yess I'm glad Johnson got signed. He fits our needs perfectly and now we won't have to worry about Hendry overpaying for Crisp, Payton, Byrd or any other backup centerfielder. We just got one essentially for free. Don't see a negative to this situation.

And I don't see how the Rays can't be in on Murton now. They need a corner outfielder and Murton seems to fit the bill perfectly for them. They are also stacked with pitching prospects, so maybe we can get one of them. Not Price, McGee or Davis or something obviously, but we could get someone useful. Maybe Edwin Jackson for Murton, or Howell or Hammel or something..

Great signing! This is a perfect fit. Johnson was as good at, if not better, then what was out there on the trade market. He can mash lefties and play a respectable CF and a good LF, RF to give Pie, Soriano and Fukudome some days off during those long, hot summers in Wrigley. Moreover, a Jays fan posted a couple of days ago about how Johnson is your typical lunch pail type tough guy with high character. Well, we love those guys in Chicago. It fits our image. It fits with the type of team Piniella is putting together.

this was a good move by the cubs i think.

its funny that the rangers came calling to hendry saying "okay, just give us matt murton for byrd" after byrd's horrible spring. I hope hendry just farted in the phone then hung up.

Dude, if the braves get murton for ring, i will start stalking matty as well.

Where is Jrf? He wanted this move some time back. Good signing for the fact of his RH ABs against lefties. I have concerns about his back. Especially in the early months since the Cubs play a ton of home games in April at Wrigley. However, it is a solid move for a back up. It also all but erases Crisp rumors...Thankfully.

Matt will end up somewhere on his feet. Hendry said during the offseason he wanted to trade Matt to a club that gives him at least a chance to start some games.

"I hope hendry just farted in the phone then hung up."

Win1forRonny please dont do that again! I work in an office cubicle and cant just burst out laughing!

This is a coup for Hendry in another sense. He sent a message to Texas and any other team with bright ideas that he won’t be held up and robbed for mediocre players. His patience and resourcefulness net the Cubs an equivalent or better player at far less cost to the organization. Maybe next time he opens trade talks other teams won’t assume he’s ready to unload the farm at the drop of a hat. Maybe other GM’s now realize he can and will seek alternatives. He can now use Murton and/or Cedeno to shore up other areas on the team or down on the farm. An experienced lefty reliever would be nice, what would Cleveland want for Aaron Fultz?

Yeah...where is jrfukudome anyway? He mentioned Reed Johnson as a good option long before any of us did.

Now we need another trade rumor. :)

How about Marshall, Murton and Cedeno for...

I think you guys are right about Johnson's back and the cold. But I don't think he was dropped because he was not recovered; I think he was dropped because he's not so good against RH pitching.

Jays fans seemed to have loved him; he costs us nothing; and most importantly, he's just bad enough that Felix doesn't need to sweat. His slight ineptitude is a plus for the Cubbies...

*Right handed hitting Outfielder A Projections:*
405ab, 55runs, 13hr, 56rbi, 3sb, .296/.365/.454

*Right handed hitting Outfielder B Projections:*
275ab, 40runs, 6hr, 40rbi, 3sb, .273/.342/.407

Yeah, I'd rather have Matt Murton over Reed Johnson, too.

Poor Matt Murton.

msk86, I guess that the Cubs can release Soriano and put together a lineup with Murton in left, maybe bring back Jeromy Burnitz in RF, and forget about Brian Roberts and try to get Augie Ojeda back from Arizona. Those were all "great guys." But they're not going to help the Cubs win anything. Holding on to "great guys" like Murton and letting their trade value go down to nothing has been one of the reasons why the Cubs haven't won. (Remember Corey Patterson? How about Sammy Sosa? And wasn't there talk with the Orioles to send them Mark Prior for both Miguel Tejada AND Eric Bedard in 2005?) Have fun holding onto the "nice guys." I'll take players that will help the team win anyday.

After watching Byrd strikeout on breaking balls yesterday leads me to wonder if he could hit the ground if he fell over. I don't know what his 07 stats were, but after yesterday I think a pitching prospect (or 2) was needed -- from Texas.

I like the idea of Johnson as a backup for Pie and PH. Would have liked more experience as CF. I don't know how he is as a PH. Murton seems to be better with playing time. A backup for Pie was needed. I strongly believe the young guys will tire. I definitely agree with playing Pie 125+ games but we can't have him struggle like Theriot. Falling off from a .240-.260 BA? He's not in the lineup for his bat; just so he knows it and it's not a distraction.

I bet we need a solid backup at C before year is over, too. Can Blanco play enough? Murton/?/? for Salty. How many ?'s.

Matt Murton can't b-up CF. A big concern is to have a guy who can fill in for Pie against tough lefties. It is not all about Murton's hitting projections. Someone has to play CF to spell Pie once in a while. Nothing against Matt.

Just curious, can Cedeno play 2B/SS/3B?
Simply to create a new rumor... Cedeno and Murton to DET for Inge + ?

INOK,

my bad!

Scribbletone, I like the Murton to the Rays idea, but not for Edwin Jackson or Jason Hammel because they're out of options. We can't even fit Jon Lieber into the rotation, so how would we fit in one of those two. I think we should get a pitcher with options left because next year Dempster and Lieber are free-agents and Marquis is hopefully traded. Then in 2009 that pitcher could compete with Marshall and Gallagher for the 4th and 5th spots in the rotation.

TigerFan,

Yes, Cedeno can...but I heard you guys wanted bullpen guys. We would rather have prospects than Inge. He makes too much and wouldn't play very much for us.

Yeah DET wants bullpen guys, but if we get two guys like Cedeno and Murton, we can trade Thames and Inge for bullpen guys. DET can also just see who gets cut at the end of Spring Training.

Bruce Levine on ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago is now reporting that the signing of Reed Johnson opens the door for Hendry to make one final push for Brian Roberts. If something were to get done on that front he expects it to happen over the next few days. Otherwise it is probably a lost cause.

Apparantly part of the hold-up was that if the Cubs couldn't sign Johnson that Hendry was going to need to make another deal involving some of the players that would be included in a Roberts trade.

I'm still a bit shocked that Roberts has remained the focal point for Hendry this off-season when the rotation is a big question mark!

Murton to the Twins. They have Craig Monroe and Jason Kubel as thier backup corner outfielders and DHs. I think Jason Kubel has options too.

Monroe is out next year and Jason Kubel is a poor mans Murton. :-)

2 cases of Dome Dogs and 4 cases of Summit Porter mmmmmm... and if need be a nice pitching prospect.

The 2nd best rotation in the NL and replacing Trachsel\Marshall with Dempster doesn't really scream question mark to me. Sure I would like another #2 or Ace type guy...but I think we are fine the way we are.

I guess it's R.I.P. Matt Murton then. Too bad he never learned to play CF.

The Rangers lowered their demand for Byrd? I heard they wanted Murton AND Gallagher, Ceda, or Veal. What a joke!!!

Looks like we'll have a bench (at least for now) of Fontenot, Cedeno, Ward, Reed Johnson, and Blanco. Once Cintron gets healthy he'll replace either Cedeno or Fontenot, whoever isn't hitting.

That all goes by the boards if they get Roberts, which Bruce Levine just said they are still working hard to get before Monday's first game.

We'll see. This thing will go down to the last minute. Roberts has spasms in his back. He took an injection and will be out a couple games they are saying.

"The 2nd best rotation in the NL and replacing Trachsel\Marshall with Dempster doesn't really scream question mark to me."

2nd best in NL? Huh?

I'll take the following rotations ahead of the Cub:

Arizona (Webb and Haren)
Dodgers (Penny, Lowe, Billingsly)
San Fran (Cain, Lincecum, Zito)

So I guess I would rank the Cubs at higest the 4th best. But after Zambrano and Lilly they have HUGE question marks. Hill is still not dependable and is a head case. Marquis, Lieber, and Dempster are just filler. None of them can be relied upon which means that at the very least we have 2 out of every 5 games where our bullpen could be overworked.

The rotation is a big question mark and anyone that doesn't see that is as blind as Hendry.

Squeek,

what I see is proof. Last year, the Cubs HAD the 2nd best starting ERA in the NL, next to the Pads, who you didn't even include on that list of yours. I'm not saying, nor did I ever, that they ARE the 2nd best, but they were last year, and thats just a fact.

What makes you think Hill is a head case, because he has had control problems this spring? Wow. Lets wait before you label people like that until the games actually count.

So like I said, its fact. The Cubs had the 2nd best rotation in the NL last year...you can't really argue that. now they have replaced Marshall\Trachsel with Dempster...hardly reason to panic.

Chicago's rotation had the 2nd best ERA in the NL last year. Obviously those teams will improve because of youth and additions, but who is to say that the Cubs' guys won't improve either. Zambrano didn't exactly pitch great, and Hill is fully capable of improving. The addition of Lieber and Dempster only help the cause. I wouldn't consider the rotation to be a major concern, not to the point where we would make a major trade.

exactly scribble. I am NOT saying they ARE the 2nd best rotation. I'm just saying that I wouldn't call them a "question mark" and I certainly wouldn't think its cause to panic.

Squeek,

Dont forget Jake Peavy and Chris Young of the Padres.

However the Cubs did have the 2nd best team ERA in the NL last year. Padres with 3.70, the Cubs with 4.04, followed by the Braves with 4.11, and D-Backs wiht 4.13. But the D-Backs have improved I would say.

I love Matt Murton and wish him well. I have all kinds of things signed by him including a framed Jersey. But for respect to him we have to let him to start somewhere. Get a prospect or someone they can use to help bring Roberts over. I still hope that trade gets done.

"What makes you think Hill is a head case, because he has had control problems this spring? "

It has nothing to do with his control problems this Spring. It is FACT that he loses focus during games when things are not going his way. He needs to learn how to pitch through that. This Spring event was just a case in point.

As far as people who are saying that the addition of Dempster and Lieber only help. Come one. I'd like to believe that but Lieber is coming off an injury and he has yet to prove he'll be effective. And Dempster? The guy that everyone had to hold there breath whenever he came in to save a game? You're telling me that we are going to rely on this guy now for at least 5 or 6 innings every 5 games??

I'd rather Hendry have found a way to bring in a Joe Blanton. In that case you then have Hill as your 4 and Lieber/Dempster/Marquis battling for the 5th spot.

Can someone tell me why Dempster gets such a bad rep here in Chicago? Granted, obviously he wasn't Mariano Rivera as a closer, but he certainly wasn't Mel Rojas or Latroy Hawkins either. From '05-'07 as a closer he saved 86% of his games, and that's figuring in 2006 when he blew 9 saves for an absolutely ABYSMAL Cubs team that couldn't score runs. Take out '06 and he save games at a 92.4% clip. His ERA got artificially inflated because of the fact that he would tend to give up a few runs when he came in with a big lead, but in close games he was generally solid. Like I said, he was far from a superstar but he also doesn't deserve the 'Dumpster' nickname that so many of my fellow Cub fans have slapped on him. He did a serviceable job but Cub fans paint him in the same light as people like Hawkins (who single-handedly cost us a postseason berth in '04). He's also one of the most likeable and popular guys on the team. As someone who watches just about every Cub game, I felt more comfotable with Dempster coming into save a game than I did with pretty much anyone we had since Randy Myers' heyday.

AS far as Johnson goes, I like the signing. He rakes against lefties, will put up comparable numbers to Crisp or Byrd, and didn't cost anything in terms of prospects. He's good enough to start for Pie against tough lefties and occasionally give Soriano and Fukudome a day off, but not good enough to tempt Lou to make him the starter at the first sign of slumping from Pie.

I have to say, it was crazy reading about the Reed Johnson reports this morning, then going up to Scottsdale this afternoon and seeing him in the lineup! Nuts.

He struck out his first AB, Fielders Choice the 2nd, and hit a triple the next AB. It may have been ruled a double with an error, but either way, the ball hit the wall in CF. Good stuff.

What would it take to get Eugenio Velez from the Giants? 2B, switch hitter, young, 14 stolen bases as of this post.

Enjoy Reed Cubs fans, I guarantee you will. His ability to play all 3 OF positions well is huge for your bench. He also gets hit by pitches more than anybody I have ever seen, it's insane. Hate to see the knee-high socks man go but I'm sure you North Side faithful will take care of him.

Not Blanton, Squeek. Check out his home/away numbers. Big difference...

Thanks 92-93, I really wasn't that familiar with him but after these quotes:

"You guys don't know how happy I am to be here," Johnson said.

"This was my first choice, and my only choice."

Welcome aboard Reed Johnson! Good luck to the Jays this year.

Yeah I'm not sure I've ever been happier to see the Cubs sign a bench guy in late March. We got pretty damn lucky that he came our way, because in essence he fit our needs perfectly

Oh and I should add - he runs the bases very aggressively and well but he is by no means a base stealer. Or at least he wasn't on Toronto, maybe in the NL the reins will be loosened a lil.

Looks like it's already been covered here, but I'll be another voice saying to Cubs fans that you're really, really going to like this guy. The perfect role for him is in the NL hitting LHP. If that's all you're asking him to do you're getting a great defensive outfielder (he was the CF in college while Aaron Rowand played RF) and a guy who has always hit LHP so well that his overall numbers don't even look so bad, despite the fact that he can't hit RHP at all-- which is why the Jays let go of him.

See, the Jays needed someone who can take over if Matt Stairs (40) gets hurt, or if Stairs takes over at DH because Frank Thomas (39) is hurt, or at 1B if Lyle Overbay (coming off two hand surgeries) is hurt. Johnson would have stayed had he been able to play every day when Stairs couldn't play LF, but because he can't hit RHP (and Stewart can), the Jays went with Stewart. Johnson is better than Stewart in every other way, and the fans here LOVED him. As long as he's healthy, and not having to face RHP, you'll end up wondering why the hell the Jays got rid of this guy. Trust me.

A drunk Jays fan always tells it better.

Stoeten and 92-93,

Excellent insight from you guys. There is hope for this site. Information passed from fans to fans. Who would'a thunk it! It gets old when fans come on threads just to bash. I don't do that even with Cub rivals. I have to say I end up doing more reasoning and explaining to bashers more than I care to do. I can talk baseball with any fan about their team and keep it real. I love the game like many here do.

Hey, I take a back seat to no one on following my Cubbies as other Cub Fans will say the same about their passion for the team. You have the same for the Jays. Yes, I will wonder why they released Reed if what you say is true. Right place, right time I guess. I have to believe him when he said Chicago was his first and only choice. The deal got done pretty quick when other teams could have needed him. Anyway, I want to say thanks for posting your insights.

Btw, I have heard some good stories about Stairs when he was a Cub from some inside people. What a clown! I'm guessing his personality has been felt in Toronto. Like INOK said, good luck to the Jays.

Curious...Jays fans from the states or up north?

Forget his personality, he swung the best bat on the team last year! (points to our offensive woes) And that really isn't even an exaggeration, he was our best hitter. Incredible bat speed for a guy his age.

From Toronto here, unfortunately live in NY and subjected to the non-stop RedSox/Yankees bias on ESPN.

I presume from reading Mr. Stoeten's blog that he as well lives in Toronto. I doubt you'd find many Jays fans south of the border unless they are transplanted Canadians, primarily because the Jays almost NEVER make it to a national telecast here. However, in terms of rating quality not quantity, I'd say Toronto's real baseball fans and blogs are up there with any of the teams in baseball.

Yeah, I thought so. I never met a Jays fan down here that was not from Canada. Feel for you on the Eastern Seaborg Programing Network. Who doesn't...unless you are a Yankee, Red Sox, Met and maybe Philly fan. I'd love it if I were those fans, too. The Orioles, Pirates...Jays are eastern teams and non existant to them. What blog is a good one to catch real Jays ball if I need an ear to the fan?

http://battersbox.ca/ for the semi-intelligent Jay fan.

http://drunkjaysfans.blogspot.com/ for above poster stoeten's kick ass blog, which honestly covers everything you need to know blue jays. (i really hope he doesnt mind me his site here!)

One thing on Johnson backing up Pie on the site...

"testicular torsion victim Felix Pie"

First, that is awful hurtful and I can't even think of it without PAIN. Second, a guy named Johnson as a back up to Pie (what was on the Jays site) would be funny if PAIN was not on the mind. That is cold. :)

Also, I see Sal was released...I know this guy. Oh well, if he has to go...

Just so that you guys know, Pie is so fresh off the boat, that he just taped his balls really tight thinking that would make it OK.

No joke. Just taped them up.

One of my fav jays is gone, this guy made our Offense go in 06, he was one of the best leadoff hitters in the game that year. 07 he gets hurt and doesn't play well hurt (what a surprize)and everyone writes him off.

I for one think Pie should be worried, if he stumbles Reed is one of the best leadoff hitters in the league vs LHP, and in 06 he started working better vs RHP.

I really hope Johnson gets more then a 4th OFer type of time I guess without a DH spot tho that might be hard.

"I'll take the following rotations ahead of the Cub:

Arizona (Webb and Haren)
Dodgers (Penny, Lowe, Billingsly)
San Fran (Cain, Lincecum, Zito)

lmao Zito.

Anyways the Cubs are a top 5 staff in the NL.

and Rich Hill a head case .... uh WHAT? No. Don't talk ever again.

I almost get the sense from Jays fans that they are giving him the love that the Cubs do to Murton. They would love to keep him but would rather see him go and get a chance to succeed.

Thank you Jays fans. I look forward to having him on the Northside of Chicago. I actually cannot think of anyone who I would rather have for this role than Johnson. I was kind of ready to accept Jay Payton. This is a blessing.

Good Luck this season.

"lmao Zito.

Anyways the Cubs are a top 5 staff in the NL.

and Rich Hill a head case .... uh WHAT? No. Don't talk ever again."

You have an issue with Barry Zito but not Rich Hill? That deserves a LMAO! Let's see, Zito has 7 full seasons under his belt and is still just 29. He has pitched over 200 innings in all of those seasons but one in which he pitched 197 innings. His CAREER ERA is 3.67 and he has won 113 games while losing just 76. He had by far and away his worst season last year, but in your mind you can now right him off as a has been?? lmao!

Rich Hill has ONE full season under his belt and is already 27. In 318 MLB innings he has a CAREER ERA of 4.39 and is 17-17.

I think I'd take Zito on the Cubs. I'd like to think Rich Hill will take another step forward this season, but I am certainly not counting on it.

92-93, Toronto is actually one of my favorite teams outside of Chicago. I have lots of family in Kitchener and we head up to Toronto every now and then to catch a game. My uncle always has tickets. Anyway, glad to have Reed Johnson. He's a good fit and I have a feeling he'll be a fan favorite because of the way he plays.

Guess I'll throw in my 2cents as well.

I like the Johnson trade as well. I liken Johnson to be the OF version of Mark DeRosa. Can play all positions in the OF. Solid bat. Johnson, however, struggles against tough righties but he's a gritty type player and I like that. I also think the Blue Jays saved Jim Hendry from himself because I think Marlon Byrd would have been your Plan B if Johnson didn't work.

Now that our team is taking more shape, I think Hendry has one more move to make...

Get George Sherrill from the O's.

I hate dealing with Orioles because McPhail is in a position of leverage and Angelos is pudwack..

But with Eyre going down indefinitely with elbow issues, trying to make Marshall as your lefty in the bullpen doesn't make sense on multiple levels.
1. His trade value is as a starter, using him in the bullpen will lower his value.
2. Its not easy to shorten and then lengthen and then shorten a guy's workload if he keeps switching from starter to bullpen to starter to bullpen.

Pignatiello has been a nice surprise and would like him as our second lefty but not our primary late inning lefty in the bullpen.

George Sherrill makes this bullpen downright nasty. I also wouldn't mind if Brian Fuentes was available either but Sherrill would be cost effective in prospects and money.

Put Sherrill, Howry and Marmol and Eyre when he comes back and we make Cub baseball games go from 9 inning affairs to 6.

The best way to compensate for a slightly above average starting rotation is having a dominating bullpen. It takes pressure off the starters.

See if Orioles will bite on Cedeno, Pignatiello and Ceda for Sherrill and a prospect.

Of course everyone knows I love the Sherrill Idea. I still think we get both Sherrill and Roberts. I just have to believe that.

Gallagher/Veal/Marshall/Pignatiello/Cedeno
(maybe Haufpair could be included in this?)

What would it take to get Fuentes I have heard that he is available. Murton/Marquis (cash)/Patterson/Haufpair

I dont know if that would work for them or if that is too much. Just throwing it out there

Rockies are high on Fuentes and like him as the setup man to Corpas and backup to closer if Corpas falters. It would take a prized prospect for the Rox to consider a deal.

The reason Fuentes is available is because of money...so the only reason they'll trade him is if they can get prospects in return. So, nothing with Marquis will work.

A deal for Fuentes would probably take Gallagher, Murton, and a Juan Mateo/Kevin Hart type prospect.

I'd rather trade Cedeno, Pigs, and Ceda for Sherrill and a prospect.

Alright, first off, the O's would be best to hold off on trading Sherrill until mid season. I don't even care if his numbers arent that impressive, he will still be a HUGE addition to a team down the stretch.

As a Cubs fan, I am fine with that. Let Pigs get a chance to see if his awesome ST is a mirage or not. If it isn't, then he is clearly our guy. Trading what is possibly our 2 best bullpen prospects for an aging Sherrill at this point would be flat out stupid on the Cubs part.

If we werent going to include Ceda in the Roberts trade, what in Gods name makes you think we would include him in a Sherrill trade??

Just heard someone say the Cubs released ALex Cintron. Anybody else hear this?

Yes, Alex has been released. Hence the term 'cup of coffee'. Cedeno beat him out.

Alex's best memory as a Cub will be a ST faceburger on deck.

Don't worry, he'll catch on...maybe he gets a call from Baltimore.

Now that the cubs have a right handed hitting, hard-nose playing, outfielder that can play all three outfield spots, i doubt very much that they would be looking for anybody else from the O's besides "you know who". Now that the cubs have a good team put together they wouldn't want to downgrade themselves by picking up any of the O's garbage.

I think its a shame that cedeno is on his way to make the final roster, i liked him at first but then i realized he's dumb when it comes to defense

I would love to see murton become one of the perennial all stars of the league but its sad to know that it wont happen in a cubbie uniform, i think if he went to the O's in a deal for "you know who" then i could really see him being the star of that franchise one day, cuz the rest of their team is garbage, including their gm

As long as Markakis is still an Oriole he will be the star. I have always been a Matt Murton fan and don't think he was ever given a fair shake here. But he is never going to be a star. He's a good player that can get on base and hit for okay power. But he'll never be a star on any team.

I love the idea of Johnson/Pie platoon. Matt, well I wish him well, a natural hitter but a below average fielder in the OF. Cedeno over Cintron is a bit hard to swallow because Cedeno's baseball IQ might even be approaching below zero....
