« Hairston Key To Pads' OF Dealings | Main | Piniella Wants Hendry Back In '09 »
With Carlos Delgado being sent to New York for an MRI on his sore right hip, the Mets may be in need of first base help.
Delgado hurt the same hip toward the end of last season, missing 2 1/2 weeks during the stretch run. The Mets say it's not serious this time but Delgado is starting to show signs that he's becoming old before his time. He may not be able to bounce back as quickly as he once did.
Now the Mets might be another potential destination for Scott Hatteberg if Joey Votto shoves him out of Cincinnati.

Question marks for the Mets?

See? Even Delgado's body wants Nady to be a Met once again. Omar needs to do everything in his power to get Nady back. He'd make a great platoon partner with Church, as well as insurance for Alou and Delgado.
Makes too much sense.
Another name I thought of was Inge. He's versatile, and can be used as a 3rd catcher (albeit reluctantly) which frees up Castro to be used as a pinch hitter.

"Old before his time"
the guy is 35, how is that "old before his time" ? it's not like he's in his 20's or even early 30's..

I hope this isn't serious! The Mets need a big bounceback year from Delgado.
That said, I would love Omar to nab Nady back from the Pirates. I wonder what it would take? They can't be asking all that much, it's not like he's the key to their future success.

hatteburg for reyes, both teams meet the need of their injured players...what do you think met fans???...I'm down...
*Please note, this is not a serious comment.

not alot of great options - obviously mets will wait and see if its a temp situation or more of a long term deal. Nady is good, Millar can be had, they could end Shawn Greens retirement and bring him back - but i will go with..... Nick Johnson - heilman for Johnson

Dan Johnson for AA pitcher. He plays decent defense and might be able to OPS near .800 while Delgado is injured.

touchmymonkey, definitely agree on Omar taking a long hard look a Nick Johnson if Delgado misses significant time, although I cant see them trading Heilman, the one reliable arm in the bullpen at this point. It seems fair, but then the Mets have absolutely no stability in innings 6-8. That is already their biggest weakness, I am not going to fool myself into believing that Duaner Sanchez will be even league average until he proves it. Nobody has ever had a surgery like he had (atleast a pro ball player), so counting on him seems silly. With Heilman gone, the Mets pen could have Schoeneweis and Sanchez as the bridge to Wagner, which is scary.

If I am Andy MacPhail, I am on the horn with Omar and offering Aubrey Huff for a low-level prospect.

The problem of trying to find a 1B is twofold for the Mets.
1. There isn't anyone all that interesting available. I suspect that Michel Abreu will be given a long, hard look before the Mets commit to finding a replacement, if its even needed.
2. The Mets don't have much to trade. John Niese showed he has a nice arm today, and some members of the Mets brass secretly favored him over a lot of the guys they dealt for Santana. They were able to keep him out of trade talks because an uneven 2007 lead to a mediocre final pitching line.

I don't think the Nationals do Heilman for Johnson. They have a pretty well stocked bullpen and could probably get pretty nice value for Johnson even with all the time missed. He was an OBP machine when he was last healthy. I think any discussion for Johnson would have to start with either Mike Pelfrey or Jon Niese, as the Nats could certainly use some starters.

If I were the mets I would sign Bonds to play first base.

Matt LaPorta?

K Morales is young, cheap, and has lots of upside. Don't know what the Angels would want - probably just some minor league talent as I don't see the Mets having much to offer that would be upgrades at the ML level.
Morales is cheap, young, and has some very nice upside. Angels have Kotchman at first and about 10 players that can rotate into the DH position.

Carlos Delgado's MRI was negative and he was diagnosed with an "impingement of the right hip," according to the Mets.
The Mets said he'll be ready to play again in a couple of days.

"The Mets said he'll be ready to play again in a couple of days, and then the problem will come up every week or so, causing Delgado to miss a good portion of the season and damage the Mets hopes of reclaiming the division title."
There, fixed that for you.

Well, if this ends up as a long term issue for Delgado that causes him to lose substantial playing time, Dan Johnson from Oakland is an option. Good OBP skills, good power as well. Not a bad defensive 1st baseman either. It also wouldn't cost the mets as much in the way of prospects/players. Just a thought.

Don't they have MRI technology in Florida?
Posted by: ballyb11 | March 01, 2008 at 06:45 PM
Damn. Bad news for Braves fans like me who were counting on Delgado to be a drag on the Mets' offense. If they go out and get someone like Nick Johnson, well, they just might get positive production from there!
Posted by: mraver | March 01, 2008 at 07:40 PM
It all depends how long Delgado will be out - if he's going to miss time at all. If it's a short amount of time, they'll look to Micheal Abreu or another internal option (Jose Valentin?). If he's out a long time, they'll find a stopgap until next year's free agent class. Maybe Xavier Nady or someone along those lines.
Nick Johnson, I don't see him going to the Mets. The Nationals won't just give him away. The Matt LaPorta suggestion won't happen either. The Mets won't pay Milwaukee's asking price for him.

Bj, out of all the suggestions so far, I love Kendry Morales. This guy can play on my team anyday. He can be a nice fill in and possibly even the first baseman for the future, for cheap. This could help going towards signing Perez. Seems just like an Omar type of move, find a talented guy on a team that has him blocked and fill a position of need without giving up a tremendous amount.

That's what I was thinking as well nrmax88. Couple big advantages:
1. Cost - virtually none. Frees up cash for this year and beyond.
2. Talent required - as I mentioned you would most likely be looking at minor league talent. Given what has already been traded away at the higher levels, maybe a nice package of youngsters down in A ball? The Angels really only have holes at SS right now (and even that isn't bad). This gives the Mets the ability to plug a whole at no cost to this years team.
3. Upside. Kendry has some very nice upside. To project the guy posting a 850-900 OPS isn't outrageous by any means. He will be anywhere between adequate to very solid.
4. As for next year who's available? Compete against the Braves/Yanks/Sox/everyone else for Tex? When Richie Sexson is the next best option you know this upcoming offseason won't solve the Mets problems. Either they (1) pay crazy cash for Tex (2) resign Delgado or (3) settle for something much worse.
I wish the Angels could keep him but given their current situation I just don't see where he fits in (unless Kotchman develops mono again). He will be a good player. Just needs a place to showcase his talent.

Where is Doug Mientkiewicz when you need him? I think he signed a minor league contract with the Pirates, you can get him cheap. At least with Ol' Mientkiewicz you know your getting Stellar D. I think the Mets have enough in thier lineup to make up the difference. Plus I think with a minor league contract you can always send him down when Delgado comes back.

scott hatteberg is always an option for the mets and the reds will prob take a major league ready ss or minor league sp
