« Blocked Prospects: Brent Lillibridge | Main | MLB Roundup Video »
I received dozens of excellent submissions for the MLBTR logo contest. I appreciate each and every one of them.
The winner comes from a guy named Aaron, who you can reach at aaron4289@yahoo.com if you'd like to hire him. Here it is; what do you think? Click to enlarge it.

I like it. It's gritty with a ball on it. very cool.

i see that you ditched the first part of the slogan. honestly, i dont think its needed,as people can figure out pretty quickly what the site is for. and its popular enough that people know what its for. good pick.
Posted by: Guitar Hero | March 31, 2008 at 07:46 AM
Excellent pick. Modern with 'dirt' to remind us of the old pasttime.

Dude, that's hot.
Posted by: Mr. JavaScript | March 31, 2008 at 07:53 AM
I came around on the slogan based on all the comments left about trimming it. That was good advice.

The redesign starts with the logo. Took longer than I planned to get it right but now I'm happy with it. So my guy is gonna be working on the redesign for the next few weeks and we can probably roll it out by May.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | March 31, 2008 at 08:04 AM
When are you breaking out the new logo? With the redesign or you goin to pop that on here first?
Posted by: Jay107 | March 31, 2008 at 08:07 AM
I'll bust that out as part of the redesign but not before. Just wanted to give a peek and also make sure people liked it before we went further!

Very very cool, Aaron’s got talent. The baseball reminds me of the old baseballs we used in the neighborhood games. NICE!
Posted by: INOK | March 31, 2008 at 08:22 AM
It looks nice as a header image for a blog. Doesn't really strike me as an effective logo though.
Posted by: msfarrel | March 31, 2008 at 08:40 AM
I have to agree with msfarrel in that it's not a very effective logo. There's a difference between a logo and a banner, and the one you chose is more of a banner. Maybe it should've been a "banner contest".

Who cares what I called it?
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | March 31, 2008 at 09:34 AM
Love the new logo. It was a big improvement, the ball does remind me of the neighborhood games.

Tim,
I'm not trying to be a pain, but if I had known you wanted a banner, I would've designed a banner and not a logo for you. Either way, it's your site, and a great one at that. Keep up the good work.
Posted by: tire kicker | March 31, 2008 at 10:32 AM
Nice job Aaron
Posted by: Bravesfan89 | March 31, 2008 at 10:47 AM
I definitely used the wrong word tire kicker...but dozens of people sent in banners, I think they knew based on the size requirement.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | March 31, 2008 at 11:38 AM
Very amateurish. It's hard , or I should say near impossible, to trademark a baseball or a font which is already copyrighted. Since I'm almost certain the font was downloaded from some free font web page.
Nice texture on the ball though. But the point of having a logo is being able to use it everywhere. Uniformity is key in marketing and advertising. Perhaps that wasn't the point of your contest. But it should matter to you because if you can create interest outside of the world wide web, it becomes easier to create a larger following. Banners are okay, logos are professional.

I like it, good luck with the new design, I already want to see it
Posted by: Manny7 | March 31, 2008 at 01:14 PM
Tim,
Your biggest mistake was asking people for their opinion.
Posted by: coryjwilson | March 31, 2008 at 02:19 PM
Can't please everyone, but I hope that most like it. It seems that they do. Have no idea what Gavin is talking about, none of it seems to relate to MLBTR.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | March 31, 2008 at 02:41 PM
Darn, I used the same font, but I guess my overall design was a little too basic. Oh well, that's why I'm a photo major and not a graphic design major! As for using the free fonts, who cares? I went to dafont.com, as I'm sure Aaron did, too. It was a fun contest, congrats to the winner!
Posted by: Jukee | March 31, 2008 at 02:51 PM
I hate to say it Tim, but that is extremely ameteur. I hope you didn't pay more than $10 for it, because frankly, it's not worth even that :( The other was much much better and professional.
Posted by: TylerJohnson | March 31, 2008 at 04:12 PM
Gavin, I completely agree with you. What Gavin is saying is that you really can't use that "logo", although it does look good. More than likely, the font and baseball image are copyrighted and the owners could come after you if they see it. I use free fonts and stock photos all the time in school, but in the "real world" there are too many law suits. You just have to be careful. And also, the reason I designed a logo was because the one that you got from the logo company was a logo and not a banner, which led me to believe that is what you wanted for MLBTR. I'm not trying to be a debbie downer, I'd just hate to see anything bad happen to arguably the best website online.
Posted by: tire kicker | March 31, 2008 at 04:13 PM
Thanks! For instance- although these fonts are free for personal use- this font happens to be from "28 Days Later" which was designed by Jens R. Ziehn of Filmhimmel. They design movie fonts. Which means although you can use them for fun- Movie companies or Filmhimmel own the copyrights.
I'm not saying people will be up in arms about you using it. It's just kind of shady because in essence you're stealing.
But those are your own demons. The site still rocks, I just thought I would give you the low down on amateurish "banner design" and the trouble it can cause.
Posted by: Gavin | March 31, 2008 at 05:19 PM
Gavin - "Free for personal use" definitely includes website banners. Unless Tim decides to sell printed copies of the banner for profit there is absolutely no problem with using this font.
Posted by: overmind | March 31, 2008 at 05:30 PM
Actually, "personal use" is for private use only. Which means broadcasting on a highly trafficked website pretty much contradicts that. He doesn't have to be selling it for it to be infringement.
Anyway the point is someone made that font and spent a good time of effort on it. Ripping off someone's work and calling it your own logo without permission is wrong and it' stealing.
Like I said, I'm not saying anything will happen, I'm just saying from a designers stance if someone jacked my work, I'd be pissed. Especially if it looked as bad as this one.
Posted by: Gavin | March 31, 2008 at 05:52 PM
So if an individual's website or blog for that matter gets a ton of hits, it's no longer a personal website? I'm pretty sure this site is run only by Tim, and it's moreso his way of publicising his opinions, and sharing his news and I really don't see how the amount of traffic would change that. Did you create the font? Because I think if the creators of such fonts cared enough about others using their work for banners, etc: they wouldn't put them up as free downloads all over the internet, and urge downloaders to use them. I think you're overreacting for no reason.
Posted by: overmind | March 31, 2008 at 06:15 PM
Unfortunately a website is considered a "published work" and therefore is no longer considered for personal use. Mock ups and drafts are acceptable.
I don't mean to overreact. I'm just amazed that someone just won 100 bucks and literally jacked other's people's work and called it his own. Oh well.
Posted by: Gavin | March 31, 2008 at 06:38 PM
I'm pretty sure Gavin is correct on this one...as soon as something like a "blog" becomes big due to hits, I don't think that qualifies for "personal" use anymore.
FWIW, the logo, or better yet, banner, looks pretty amateurish for what I consider a fairly legit site for info. I would absolutely reconsider a banner and really look in the direction of a true logo.
Posted by: Livermoron | March 31, 2008 at 06:40 PM
The reason why people put up free fonts for personal use online is so that you use them for free, then eventually want to use them for something like this and have to buy them from the artist. If you use fonts or images without the owner's permission, you get sued. Tim clearly stated in the contest description about images of players, but left out the same restrictions on fonts. It's not something that everyone thinks of. I'll guess and say that the people opposed to the banner design and those arguing the copyright issue are designers who know their facts. If we didn't, we'd be out of jobs. We all love this sight and that is why I don't want it to come across any legal issues.
Posted by: tire kicker | March 31, 2008 at 07:24 PM
I thought we all agreed drop shadows were a bad idea...
Posted by: JakeOD21 | March 31, 2008 at 08:06 PM
The only real problem I see with using this image as your logo is that you are really limited in terms of usage. This will work well for the website header and maybe that is all you need it for. However, a logo should be able to work as a separate identity. If you ever need to use this banner in other areas (advertising, letterhead, business cards, apparel, etc.) you may find yourself very limited. I'm not trying to argue the decision, just giving you something to think about for future use. Can't wait for the new site!
Posted by: msfarrel | March 31, 2008 at 09:00 PM
Just want to note that Aaron didn't "jack" anyone's work.
He and I received permission on the font (I wasn't under any pretense that he'd created it) and he and a friend created the baseball graphic.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | March 31, 2008 at 09:23 PM
Hey guys, I'm happy to see that most of you like it.
To the few stressing about permissions, everything you see on the banner was created by myself, or used with permission from it's creator. Tim and I have discussed this, and i have supplied him with sources, as noted above.
Posted by: Aaron4289 | March 31, 2008 at 09:34 PM
I like it. A lot.
