« Braves Interested In Juan Rivera? | Main | Pedro Looking For Three Years? »
Whither Jeff Weaver? We haven't heard much about potential destinations for the 31 year-old righty. Probably has to do with his 6.20 ERA last year, but at least he's healthy.
Jeff's younger brother Jered piped up yesterday, saying that the Nationals and Cardinals have expressed interest. Hard to say if that interest is current or just occurred at some point this winter. But either team would do well to bring him in on a minor league deal. If he's holding out for a Major League contract it may be time to adjust expectations.
When teams have their rotations all lined up on paper during the spring, with their rose-colored glasses on, adding a guy like Weaver isn't terribly appealing. But perhaps this year Scott Boras will try a new ploy with Weaver and Kyle Lohse by letting them sit out until April or even May. We've seen the mercenary thing with Roger Clemens, but not so much with healthy, younger pitchers. A few starters get injured, others don't pan out, and suddenly maybe Lohse and Weaver cause bidding wars.

Another triumphant performance by Scott Boras. Weaver should be pitching for the Dodgers on a long term contract, a la Derek Lowe. But no...Boras went for the gold. Now he's an unemployed, undesirable gypsy. Great work, Scott!

I hope he ends up on the Nats. Batting practice for the entire NL East...

I could see either in Washington, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, or another bottom-rung team. All those clubs need healthy vets to fill out their rotations and take the innings load off the younger guys, and they aren't forced to commit several years at a time to them.
That said, the Cards seem to be stockpiling medicocre or injured (or both) starters, so I guess anything could happen.

you know the cardinals wanted him back after 06. boras has a way of working hard on his big money clients and ignoring his other guys. between boras being worthless and other teams knowing that if hes their agent then the guy is particularly concerned with the money, cant say im surprised weaver or lohse is unsigned. hopefully other boras clients are taking notes.

Well said PMC. I would also wonder whether or not Kyle Lohse has ever heard of Jeff Weaver. You would think the two would dump Boras with their next phon ecall if they stopped to think about the situation…
Anyway, Weaver on a MiL deal is such a smart move that you would think more than just the Cards and Nats would be in on. Not sure if his pride (and Boras) would accept a MiL deal with possibilities; but seems better then having your career end just because you want more guaranteed cash/ML playing time when no one is interested… And with so many teams going with Kids at this point because of cash and upside value, as well as so many players playing into their late 30’s/early 40’s ~ well, I don’t see a situation where low-level pitchers will have much better chances of landing the long/large contracts the next few years.

Baltimore should sign him instead of Lohse. Save yourself $6m and add another (slightly) warm body to your team.

The Cardinals offered Weaver a 2/yr $12M deal after '06 but he opted for a one year, $8M contract from Seattle.
If he doesn't get at LEAST $4M, which is certainly in doubt at this point, Boras gave him bad advice.

I also wonder why the Marlins haven't picked up one of them? It's not like they're hurting for money.

yes boras certainly gave him bad advice. and how he got 8 million last year i still dont understand. he was trash midseason in 06. funny the same team that gave him 8 mil also gave silva that ridiculuos contract. i guess they had already slotted money towards mediocre, overpaid pitching so silva made sense to them. heck compared to weaver last year silva will look like a steal!!
