Ever lose a contact in the bathroom and scour for it for hours? That was my morning. Good times. On to the links.
- Friend of MLBTR Susan Slusser notes that the Giants had two scouts watching the A's on Wednesday. One guy they might have been eyeing is first baseman Dan Johnson. It seems that Johnson, who is out of options, may be able to linger around on the A's roster until at least mid-April given the expanded rosters for the Japan series. And since Slusser's article we've learned that Daric Barton's hand injury is more serious than initially thought. That could buy Johnson even more time if the A's aren't ready to trade him.
- The Cardinals, Mariners, Royals, and Diamondbacks, Astros, and Rangers were among teams with scouts watching Sidney Ponson touch 94mph today. He's stopped drinking and lost some weight; who knows, maybe he can help an NL club.
- Peter Abraham views Joba Chamberlain's recent comments with a little skepticism.
- MLB.com's Marty Noble calls a Mets trade for Xavier Nady "quite unlikely," though an anonymous Mets player likes the idea.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Odds and Ends: Johnson, Ponson, Nady:
Why trade for D. Johnson when you have Ortmeier and Ishikawa? Plus you can't demote him, no options. DUMB TRADE

Agree! 1B & the OF are the positions the Giants dont need hitters for, they have kids they need to try first who will be sharing time. 2B, 3B & SS though...
Could it be Chavez that they are scouting? Hummm… Seems their type of target to me!

i can't imagine why the m's are checking in on ponson.
Posted by: blueandteal | March 07, 2008 at 01:26 AM
why on earth are the cardinals or any other team for that matter watching ponson. has it really gotten that bad? this guy had one good year in his entire career. wheres jeff weaver when u need him?

I'm surprised all 30 aren't looking at him. He is zero risk, likely to take a minor league deal.

hey i am available at zero risk. maybe i should get a contract.

Yeah? Have you been clocked throwing a 94 moh fastball?

maximumpotential, that has to be one of the worst trade proposals I've ever seen (at least from the Pirates standpoint).
They give up an above-average starting pitcher paid below market value for the next 4 years who still has room for improvement AND a major league average corner outfielder (paid appropriately) for (1) a broken down, overpaid third baseman, (2) a 25-year-old non-prospect pitcher who hasn't had succes above AA; and (3) a guy that can't be involved in the trade because he was traded to the Rangers in 2007.
What?!? Snell has a ton of value in the current market, at least a few very good prospects or an elite prospect and some lesser prospects. And the Pirates are a rebuilding team who should have no interest in a guy like Chavez. Oakland shouldn't have any interest in Nady, he's basically Cust with less power, fewer walks, and a higher AVG. But he's paid a couple million more.
So the trade makes sense for the Red Sox, but not the A's or Pirates. And the Pirates get totally ripped off in the deal.
Jeez, can't believe I bothered to waste time responding to such a poor effort on your part.

Actually the Red Sox are allowed to trade players twice due to a vast conspiracy between ESPN, Bud Selig, and Hank Steinbrenner's scorned boyfriends.

i was going to say something very similar to what you said but i forgot my password and had to wait 10 minutes to receive it. That trade would go completely against what the current Pirates management 'say' they are planning to do. Especially since they are in negotiations for a longterm contract with snell. I actually laughed out loud when i read the original proposal. The last person we need in that deal is an expensive 3rd baseman on the downside of his career. Littlefield isnt here anymore.

Surprise surprise a 1-sided deal where the Red Sox clearly come out on top. Never expected that from a RS fan......oh wait.
Only problem is: Beane doesnt do those deals. If he makes a move with BOS he's getting Lowie and Masterson or he's not making a deal. Crisp might be thrown in but those 2 are absolutely in any deal w/oakland for Street or Blanton.
