« Kyle Lohse Ready To Settle? | Main | Cubs-Orioles Roberts Talks Getting Serious »

Odds and Ends: Ponson, Inge, Papelbon

Let's round up some Monday morning links.

  • The Cardinals are taking another look at Sidney Ponson.  Insert your own punchline in the comments.
  • Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun could see the O's making a minor trade for a veteran second baseman if they acquire Ronny Cedeno but not Eric Patterson in a Brian Roberts deal with the Cubs.
  • Brandon Inge is trying his best to talk his way out of town.  The Dodgers' recently reported nibble hasn't been publicly shot down, so that's a plus.
  • South Side Sox thinks speedy infielder Eugenio Velez is the type of player the White Sox could desire for Joe Crede.
  • Jonathan Papelbon wants $900K in his last year before arbitration eligibility.  Ryan Howard set a scary precedent last year.  If Papelbon doesn't get offered something close, he'd rather make a statement and be renewed near the minimum.
  • Buster Olney suggests Dan Johnson and Doug Mientkiewicz could be possibilities for the Mets in their quest for a backup first baseman.  Olney speculated on Nick Johnson, Scott Hatteberg, Richie Sexson, Tony Clark, and Kevin Millar the day before.

"The Cardinals are taking another look at Sidney Ponson."...and they've decided they're gonna need a bigger boat.

I still think the Mets should try to make a move for Ryan Freel. He can play literally every position, cant he? I can definitely see a need for him to platoon with Endy if Alou goes down, or he can play some 2nd or even first if he has to, and spell Wright and Reyes a handful of times a year. With the old players and questionmarks at a lot of positions the Mets have, he would be a nice guy to bring in that can play anywhere for an extended period of time if he has to.

"The Cardinals are taking another look at Sidney Ponson." He blocked out the sun the 1st time they looked at him.

"The Cardinals are taking another look at Sidney Ponson." Tickets will be on sale Thursday for the upcomming sumo match between Ponson and Colon.

I thought when you get signed by a team you get a sort of no trade clause for a few months to prevent a sign and trade, so why is Mientkiewicz considered a backup plan now?

Funny Ponson jokes!

and yeah....I don't see the Reds giving up Freel. From what I understand, they have always been high on him. However,I can see them trading him at the trading deadline if they are out of it.

Additionally, who would the Reds want, who we can offer? I like Freel alot, but the Mets also seem satisfied with their bench.

I like the idea of Nick Johnson. I think he could be a possible replacement for Delgado, if he recovers from that nasty accident, but I think the Nats could get more for him than Sosa and Show.

I don't know if I can handle another year of Doug Mientkiewicz's "bo hoo I suck" and the black hole that is his bat. Dan Johnson sounds good though.

tony clark is a padre

"I thought when you get signed by a team you get a sort of no trade clause for a few months to prevent a sign and trade, so why is Mientkiewicz considered a backup plan now?"

Mientkiewicz has an out in his deal with the Pirates that if he isnt on the 25 man roster by 3/26 he becomes an unrestricted free agent...the thinking being that if he doesnt secure a bench role with PGH, the NYM could get him off the street...no trade needed.

"The Cardinals are taking another look at Sidney Ponson.", and accordingly Ponson is taking another look at the Dierdorf & Hart menu.

I'm a Sox fan and Paps should just shut up and play. The players themselves have decided this and the reason that the older mediocre free agent pitchers get in most cases tvice what they are worth is because Papelbon plays "for free". He will get his payday but until the players union decides that the paystructure should be more fair to the younger players he should keep his mouth shut. If Paps thinks its unfair he should vote to change it at the next vote but by then he'll be earning big bucks because someone else plays "for free" and he will sureley have changed his mind...

Luckily enough for Cardinal fans, the Ponson thing is a non story at best. He approached the Cardinals and asked to use the mound at one of their back fields to throw for scouts. So obviously since he's throwing there, the Cards will at least watch. But the session is actually for other teams. This is the story that was reported by Derrick Goold for the Post Dispatch and comes directly from the Cards organization. Guess Tim doesn't bother to look into the truth behind stories before posting them :(

"the Cardinals will have scouts in attendance, and they are interested in seeing what he has"

You're right, the Cardinals definitely aren't taking a look at the guy they're watching! How incredibly misleading of me. And to think, I didn't even put a link to Goold's story for everyone to read.

slashieboy: Players, and especially pitchers, will always complain about this because you're never guaranteed to make it to your first free agency year. Its fine when a team renews at the level they're allowed to but they also have no right to complain if that player sells out to the biggest offer down the line. Like everything, it goes both ways. Perhaps a couple hundred thousand more early on saves a couple million down the road.

Mick, thanks for clearing that up, for some reason I thought Mientkiewicz had a major league contract. Considering it is the Pirates were talking about that's not a bad assumption to make.

"The Cardinals are taking another look at Sidney Ponson."
It takes several looks to see all of him.

Tim, trying actually looking into the facts

Taken directly from Derrick's blog from Jupiter

"Some clarification on the Sidney Ponson note reported by Joe Strauss and mentioned earlier: Ponson is looking for a place to throw for scouts. That place will be near the Cardinals’ spring training facility, if not on it. It’s a short walk for some of the Cardinals’ scouts to see him. So, they’ll stop by. The Cardinals stance on Ponson and other free agents — the David Wells or Jeff Weaver or Sidd Finch, for that matter — has not altered."

Watching Ponson throw is nothing more than a courtesy since its happening in their own backyard

Ozzie, calm down. He's factually correct. The Cardinal scouts are taking a look at Ponson. No where has anyone announced "The Cards are interested in signing blah blah blah." Other than that enjoy bashing the worthless fatass Ponson.

"The Cardinals are taking another look at Sidney Ponson.".

Double Vision got the best of me....come on Kiki, you know that's funny...ahh, you're as cold as ice....

anybody see the heyman article on roberts/payton yet? i'm so excited i don't know what to do with myself! i mean, brian roberts and jay payton to the cubs? where does this stuff come from?! the man's a genius.

Funny story -- my old roommate saw Ponson out and about in Baltimore. Twice, in fact.

Once, he was drunk.

The other time, he was buying ice cream.

You do the math.

The Wal-Mart analogy is way off.

You can argue against Wal-Mart all you want but the facts are the facts. People choose to work at Wal-Mart for those wages. If you don't want those wages work somewhere else. Wal-Mart is a free market example.

In baseball you have the Union that set the pay structure for the first several years of a players career. It's the Union that negotiated with owners to determine the drafting and cost containment policies. If the Union butted out players would be free to enter into direct negotiations with the clubs of their choice.

Players would be able to shop their services from club to club in order to secure the best contract available. Of course, this would hurt some players and really help others. But, it would provide for a free market environment where guys like Paplebon would get paid what they are really worth.

How is making $300,000+(league minimum...I think) a year bullshit in any stretch. Bro, if every hot rookie got a massive raise after just their first season, there'd be a lot of broke owners out there. Earn your keep for a few years, pay your dues, then you get to cash in. And boy do they EVER cash the f in. $$

Who keeps coming up with these white sox rumors? Kevin Corriea? Noah Lowry? Fred Lewis? Eugenio Velez? I don't think so. That's a total ripoff for the Giants! These baseball players [except for Lowry] haven't really gotten the time to prove themselves in the major leagues. Kevin Corriea looks to be a solid #5 pitcher in the Giants rotation, Fred Lewis looks to be at least a solid #4 outfielder with speed and hits for a good average, Eugenio Velez has the potential speed to steal 45-50 bases in a year, and Noah Lowry is a solid southpaw pitcher. Why give up any of these players for ONLY one year of Joe Crede? I could see a Merkin Valdez for Joe Crede trade since Valdez is out of options and is a long shot to make the opening day roster. But other than that, it would be a total ripoff for the Giants. We don't even need Crede! We could just use our other options of playing Rich Aurrlia all year at third base, or just use Kevin Frandsen there if he doesn't win the second baseman job [Frandsen did play at third when he was in college.] I mean, if we were in a win-now mode then maybe trade for Crede, but we're not really even going to compete this year. We're trying to use our younger guys in our organization so we don't screw up again and overpay for old veterans.

Oh yeah, and just so you know, I made this account before Nick Swisher was traded to the White Sox since I am a huge fan of the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants.

"The Cardinals are taking another look at Sidney Ponson" and determined they would prefer dick cheney and his gang of hunting buddies. they have better aim, seem more amusing when intoxicated, and they're certainly better looking.

You can keep your crappy Noah Lowry and his 12 walks in under 3 innings. I've been saying he sucks all offseason and now Giants fans can't spew crap about how "solid" he is.

The fact of the matter is the Giants need Crede more than the White Sox need to trade him. They will at least get something useful for him. Don't be so upset, Crede is a good player and he is healthy now so don't give me that.

ozzie...just try presenting your criticism or correction tactfully, it'll work wonders here and in life in general.

How come every capatalist conversation comes back to walmart? No one ever says best buy as an example. Wallmart emoloyees make on average nearly $11 an hour. Minimum wage is under $6. Every mom and pop store in the country basically pays minimum. So why isn't anyone screaming foul againt debbie's house of pies? But I digress, the reason they get paid this way is because of the collective bargaining it's not the red sox fault it's just the way it is and I'm not sure why all these players are complaining they ar basically dissing their own union.

"The fact of the matter is the Giants need Crede more than the White Sox need to trade him."

The Giants don't need Crede. The Giants aren't even really competing in the tough National League West. And it's not like he going to help our offense a lot in an extreme pitcher's park. Let our young guys play Sabean! Don't trade them!
