someone should tell the white sox their not going to sniff 2nd place much less the playoffs and that all the moves they made this offseason were meaningless
Posted by: Game555 | March 16, 2008 at 12:06 PM
That's what they said to the Rockies and the Diamondbacks too.
But I hope the white sox don't go after Roberts, if it costs say - Gavin Floyd, Danny Richar, Juan Uribe and Nick Masset - I'd do it, but I wouldn't offer Lance Broadway, and if Baltimore even mentions Aaron Poreda Kenny'd need to hang up the phone.

Gotta love Crisp. He can't hit his way out of a paper sack but he thinks he doesn't need to impress anyone.

um..no?

Umm, yes.
The Rockies and Diamondbacks were both 76-86 in 2006, and last year they were both in the playoffs.

What the hell does that have to do with anything at all tool?
Posted by: Game555 | March 16, 2008 at 01:53 PM
Read the article. Phil Rogers says that the ORIOLES are looking at veteran middle infielders (and Uribe was mentioned)...not the White Sox.
That's not even a rumor.

Everyone said it was going to be the Dodgers winning the division, and the D-Backs bullpen and team chemistry and the Rockies huge streak took them into the playoffs, it means anything can happen in baseball.
And you obviously don't understand what tool means if you think anything I said makes me one, tool.
Posted by: Jimmywins1 | March 16, 2008 at 01:58 PM
jimmywins1, it just isn't a fair comparison because of the context of the situation.
The Rockies and Diamondbacks both made the playoffs because they played in a much, much, much, much, much, much easier division. If they had to compete against the Tigers and Indians, then they'd finish in third place too.
Also, both of those teams were extremely lucky. Those teams were essentially carried to the playoffs by the unlikely and unsual good play of their young players. The odds of their young players playing as well as they did down the stretch were pretty low, but they just got lucky.

So I guess, yeah, anything can happen. But in that case, the Red Sox should be seriously concerned with the Orioles.

"So I guess, yeah, anything can happen. But in that case, the Red Sox should be seriously concerned with the Orioles."
The difference is, the White Sox have the players to succeed, Buehrle and Vazquez, Jenks, Konerko, Dye, Swisher, Thome, and Pierzynski are all good-great players.

Yeah, that was extremely unclear from the way Rogers phrased the sentence. But if the O's are looking at veteran MI's, it's presumably as replacements for Roberts (unless they're sandbagging on Luis Hernandez and don't really think he can play SS for them in '08), and in that case why would Roberts himself be involved in the swap? Maybe I just don't get it...

Game55 or whatever your name is, your part of the dumb@$$ group too
your counting out teams already when season hasn't even started, "Sniffing 2nd place" wtf, who says that
we'll just see where the Sox sit come all-star break

Jimmywins, you are wrong about nobody thinking Arizona or Colorado could win. Baseball Prospectus, 2007, wrote about Arizona, "the best run organization in the West will also be the best team in the division." They also gave Colorado a chance when they said, "lots of projects on the roster; if half of them pan out, they'll be in the running."

I don't see how the White Sox could go after Roberts because Baltimore is looking for solid prospects that will develop within the next two to three years. We all know that the White Sox farm system is rated last in baseball. So they don't have what it would take to get him.

I love these theoretical arguments. Of course, most people were surprised by the rise of the Rockies and Diamondbacks while being shocked at the fall of the Mets.
That doesn't mean that you should put money on the White Sox. Every year every team has a chance to win. However, this is a game of probability. As Scribble and others have noted, it would be HIGHLY IMPROBABLE for the White Sox to be a playoff team. They certainly don't come close to being an elite team under any projection system I have seen.
For a team that has 2 established starting pitchers, an aging DH and RF, and a whole lot of nothing left in the farm system it's hard for people outside of Chicago to believe this is anything but a 4th place team.
The White Sox should be sellers when it comes to veteran players. They need to be building around their young talent and gearing up for the near future.

bjsguess is right
Jermaine Dye is a frikin down fall A.J is starting to get there even though he's only 30 Konerko's still hangin in strong and Thome, not showing to much of a good sign this Spring Training
need to build around Owens, Danks and... and Fields and even that Buergois guy, he's doin pretty good for us thus spring training
Posted by: ChicagoWhiteS0xFan | March 16, 2008 at 11:21 PM
that's why the Swisher move was pretty good
Posted by: ChicagoWhiteS0xFan | March 16, 2008 at 11:21 PM
The White Sox might have a weak farm system, but I think that is because Kenny Williams uses prospects to get established talent. He never counts on them, so he trades them while they still have upside to get guys that can help the team now. Now I don't claim to be an expert, but the only prospect I can remember from the Sox system that got traded and then got good was Chris Young on the Diamondbacks.
Now you could just say that shows how bad the Sox system is. Or it just goes to show that prospects do not always pan out. The last couple years especially, Williams has traded many young minor leaguers for established Major League talent.
The system is depleted, which brings me to my point. I don't think the White Sox have a shot at landing Roberts, especially if the O's have scoffed at what the Cubs have been offering. They won't trade Floyd or Danks.
I can't see them offering more than Masset, Uribe and Brian Anderson. The O's got a CF in Bedard deal, Uribe is terrible, and Masset is out of options. I am a White Sox fan, and admit we have nothing to give for Brian Roberts. Maybe Jerry Owens would be more attractive.
But again, I really doubt the O's would want anything the White Sox have. Roberts might fill a need for the Sox, but they got nothing to give.

soxfan11,
go look at your rotation, then look at Detroits lineup. And thats excluding a 96-win team that was one game short of the world series and didn't lose a single key guy. As much as it is how mediocre the Sox are, its equally as much just how good Cleveland and Detroit are. Chicago has a quality lineup with some big power in there but that rotation is just so questionable. Even the reliable guys, Buehrle and Vazquez, really haven't been all that reliable. Contreras, Danks and especially Floyd are all huge wild cards. You just can't win puttnig that kind of starting pitching on the field. They'll need to get obscenely lucky to win the division, let alone finish second.

keep away from brian roberts sox
hes goin to the cubs!
why is everyone overlooking the fact that brian roberts was on steroids??
sure he said he only did it once but do you really believe that??? nobody does steroids just one time it wouldnt benefit youre performance at all. but id still love to see the cubs get em.
SOX BACK OFF YOU HAVE NO ONE TO TRADE!!!
the sox are going to suck this year. all the sox fans are talking like nick swisher is gonna be MVP or something i love the guy but hes not any a-rod..
you have no pitching behind mark burle or however you spell his name,i like the addition of orlando cabrera
and paul konerko....the guy is gonna give you 30 homers
but what else can he do? i bet david ortiz could beat him in a race.. but white sox...who do you have?
your a 3rd place team...better luck next year..but this year will be an improvment
