Odds and Ends: Zimmerman, Lohse, Quintero

  • The Nationals renewed Ryan Zimmerman's contract and will pay him $465K in 2008, but still hope to sign him to a longer deal. Zimmerman will be eligible for arbitration in 2009.
  • According to the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles recently discussed free agent pitcher Kyle Lohse with his agent, Scott Boras. Lohse was originally seeking a five-year deal for approximately $50 million, but word is his price has come down drastically.
  • The Detroit Free Press says the Tigers "have mild interest in Houston's Humberto Quintero but are giving strong consideration to Dane Sardinha, the starting catcher at Triple-A Toledo last year."

I'd be very pleased if Q wound up with the Tigers. It'd be nice to see him join a winner.

MLBTR just dropped a post about Marquis to the Red Sox for Crisp:

The Cub Reporter has information the Red Sox are close to reaching an agreement that would send Coco Crisp to the Cubbies for Jason Marquis and outfield prospect Sam Fuld.
"Crisp is signed through 2009 with a 2010 team option that, if bought out, would mean he's owed $11MM over that time. Marquis is owed $16.25MM through 2009, so the money is probably close enough for two of the leagues richest teams. It would be a shame to lose Fuld, but it seemed like he was losing out to Felix Pie for the center field job."
There's a little irony in that quote since Coco would become the incumbent center fielder in Chicago. Still, MLBTR discussed Coco to the Cubs before, so this is a legitimate possibility for both teams. Both Crisp and Marquis have been complaining of their tentative backup roles and a swap may put each in a better position to contribute how they see best.
For the Red Sox, this would be a depth move. The big question for their rotation is where will the innings go? Marquis would gladly slurp them up and provide more stability than Bartolo Colon and Julian Tavarez. Fuld would be a fifth or sixth outfielder for Boston.
For the Cubs, Crisp would provide solid run prevention with regular web gems in center. If he can resurrect his batting average, Coco could become that lead-off hitter the Sox hoped he would be for them. Of course, he would block Felix Pie in center field.
Thoughts? Any Cubs fans want to see Coco share time with Pie?

Technical Difficulties?

I was hoping that Tim dropped it because he found it was untrue. Please let it be untrue. Marquis is garbage in the NL. He'll be toxic waste in in the AL east. Batting practice for the Yankees.

What's the point of discussing Lohse? He's a terrible starter and an even worse mess of a reliever. I watched quite a few of his appearances and his control issues are mind-boggling. Why is he even an issue?

Lohse LOL
