Baseball Blogs Weigh In

Bunch of random topics so let's just get to it and see what it being said in the Blogosphere...

  • Big League Stew talks to Bless You Boys about the idea of Barry Bonds signing with the Tigers. BYB argues against signing Bonds noting that the Tigers already have a bunch of slow players (base cloggers?) and what they really need is some more speed in the lineup...Although we keep hearing about collusion and have not heard any numbers bandied about, Bonds has always made it very clear how much he values the almighty dollar. Does anybody else think that Bonds would already be in uniform if he had come out said he would play 2008 for $3-5MM plus incentives? The baggage is what it is, but teams might find it easier to deal with it at a price Bonds is not likely to accept.
  • Rockin' The Red takes a look at the five Cardinals that are most likely to be traded during the season...Chris Duncan is an interesting name on the list. With all the outfielders that the Cards have, Duncan is a solid bat that is likely to be a Super-2 at the end of the year.
  • The Yankees: Minors to Majors looks at the pending free agents for the Yankees and concludes that there is plenty of compensation picks to be had giving the Yankees plenty of flexibility to sign a high-end free agent like C.C. Sabathia...Of course, that is assuming the Yankees would let something like draft pick compensation stand in the way of signing a free agent. Not likely.
  • Wrigleyville23 has had enough of the Brian Roberts-to-the-Cubs media reports...Who?
  • The Bronx Zoo would love to see Nick Johnson back in a Yankees' uniform but notes that Dmitri Young may not be a dependable replacement for the Nats.
  • Mets Fever notes that eight players have moved among the Brewers, Mets and Nats since this offseason...Let's just say that the Brewers did not get the best of that "three-way trade".
  • One writer at DRays Bay is hoping the Rays and M's can re-engage talks for Edwin Jackson...The M's may be interested once again after being two-hit by Jackson yesterday, but maybe the price just went up.
  • One name that kept popping up recently as a possible trade piece in the near future was Rich Harden. Well, Harden has once again found himself on the DL and Athletics Nation is not taking it well.

It isn't like Bonds can't run, he just doesn't unless there is a reason. Sort of like Vladimir Guerrero, who could probably still steal 20-30 bases but doesn't for fear of injury, but still gets first to third with ease. I really don't think that would be a reason to keep from signing him. I think the presence of plenty of bats would be.

Bonds makes much more sense for Seattle.

Edwin Jackson has always had the arm to be a very good pitcher. I know they have Price, Davis, McGee, etc in the wings but I don't see the need to move Jackson. Unless they think his first two starts are a fluke, but with his arm I am betting he is gonna be a serviceable or better MLB pitcher after all. With Garza and Kazmir down it makes even less sense.

Thanks for the mention and getting me the most hits I've ever had in a day!

If Bonds won't accept a reasonable figure between 3 and 5 mil, I have to begin seriously doubting his none-too-subtle stated intense desire to win a championship. His website draws more attention to his business enterprises than his baseball career, so I'm starting to suspect he's treating whatever 2008 contract he might sign as a pure business development decision to pour fresh cash into his business empire. Not that there's anything at all wrong with that approach. I just see a disconnect between his stated desire to earn a WS ring and his swelling focus on bottom-line business factors.

Detroit already has a miniature replica of Bonds in Sheffield. There has been bad blood btwn them recently. Do you think Shef would have to be moved to make room for Bonds, assuming DET shows interest? Also, because DET's coach knows how to deal w/ Bonds on a daily basis, isn't he ideally suited to handle the situation?

Sorry for the back-to-back-to-back posts, but I had to add that even if Bonds is wearing his businessman-only hat and doesn't care at all about baseball anymore, he still should not have trouble signing a contract for 3.5 million if the alternative is a big fat zero on the balance books.

Cork,

Just wondering why you linked to some d-bag amateur blogger who- if my impression is correct- is nothing more than a fan posting his opinion. I thought the idea of this site was to break rumors or at least link to news sources discussing them and discuss them HERE, in this forum. I don't get it. Granted, I'm an O's fan, but the guy seems like an ignorant loser anyway. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'd prefer you reserved your links for legitimate news sources and not whiny fans. After all, that's what the Comments section is for!

BTW- I was referring to the Wrigleyville site; didn't check all of the links to see if they were the same. ...and I just realized the whole point of this post was to scan the Blogosphere, so I suppose my point is moot. My bad. Still don't get the point of HAVING a Blogosphere post, but that's another matter...
