« Rios Extension To Be Announced Today? | Main | Blue Jays Sign Alex Rios, Aaron Hill »
Earlier this week Pedro Martinez pulled a hamstring in his first start of '08 and is expected to be out until mid-May. The loss of Martinez will likely only cost the Mets seven to eight starts, which might only be a difference in two to three wins over that span. Of course, two or three more wins in '07 and the Mets would have spent October in the playoffs. With the importance of every single start magnified this year for the Mets, it would not be surprising for Omar Minaya to seek outside help as a contingency plan for Martinez (who at this point in his career cannot be counted on to stay healthy for any length of time). One long shot is Rich Harden, whom the A's may be auditioning for possible suitors. Let's take a look at what is being said in the Blogophere...

Kyle Loshe sure would've looked good in Queens right now.

You're worried about injuries, so you trade for... Rich Harden? All the Mets need is a league-average innings-eater. I'd sign Claudio Vargas and stick him right in the rotation, and let Mike Pelfrey try to figure out how to pitch in AAA.
So far the the Mets' ideal rotation of Santana-Pedro-Perez-Maine-Hernandez has been healthy for exactly zero days. At least one of Pedro and Duque are probably going to be on the shelf at any given time, and as far as I can tell, Pelfrey looks like a pretty terrible pitcher. I don't understand why the Mets don't go out and sign Vargas immediately.

It sure would be nice to pry a healthy Harden from Billy Beane (and a helluva coup, too), but it will most certainly cost Minaya Fernando Martinez...tough call, but I think I'd rather have Fernando going forward.

Okay, so I know that this blog has a reputation for being Cub-centric, but what about Sean Marshall? After the year he put together in 07, he's got to deserve better than Des Moines. Moreover, the only Cub starter yet to show good signs is Ted Lilly, which will come with time. For the Cubs, holding on to Marshall is seems like overkill on the insurance policy.
