Brewers Sign Jeff Weaver

Sounds like Scott Boras finally found a job for Jeff WeaverAccording to Tom Haudricourt, Weaver signed an incentive-laden minor league deal with the Brewers.  I never would've guessed it - the Brewers will already have an extra starter on their hands when Yovani Gallardo returns.  Haudricourt has further details on Weaver's contract here.

It's a risk-free move by Doug Melvin, especially with Weaver willing to start at Triple A (as he should given the late start).  Weaver, 31, posted an ugly 6.20 ERA last year in 27 starts for the Mariners.  Perhaps between Mike Maddux's tutelage and a return to the NL, Weaver's career can be salvaged.

I'm a bit intruigued by this. I'm thinking Weaver could be someone to fill in for Manny Parra for a few weeks because the Brewers don't want Parra's IP to be more than 150 or so given the fact that he hasn't pitched over 100 innings at any level in his career.

Of course this all depends on whether or not Weaver can keep his ERA below 5, otherwise we're just paying another Dave Bush...

I would assume this means that Bush would be traded. I think they could get what Bush would give them from Weaver and would be able to go to AAA where Bush could not. Thus you get a prospect for Bush and a replacement for no cost. Smart move actually.

I would also assume that a Bush deal is being hammered out as we speak. I wouldn't be that surprised to see Turnbow included in the deal as well, as he seems to have fallen out of favor.

This sounds to me like Doug Melvin is helping out Boras to get a deal done for Prince Fielder. Sort of like if you date my ugly, older sister I might let you hook up with my much cuter younger sister. BTW, politically correct I am not. . .

Seems like cheap insurance to me. You can never have enough rotation depth when you have Ben Sheets in the rotation, especially if Bush is on the way out with Gallardo coming off the DL.

I highly doubt Boras is worried that Melvin is taking a scrap heap deal for Weaver to help out in the Fileder money long term. That would mean Boras is human. It is more like the Brewers are trying to find a low risk 'lightning in a bottle' move becaue they have a starter they are not all that excited with now. Prince will be king with the eventual deal he will get, with or without Weaver.

I could see the Braves making a move to get Turnbow and D. Bush. Two gaps filled with 1 trade with a team.

What do the Braves have that the Brewers could possibly want? That doesn't make sense to me.

i have to agree on the possibility of a bush/turnbow trade to somewhere. Ned Yost LOVES Bush though. I'm sure he'll shed a tear or two. Trouble is Nedly doesn't know how to use Bush (always leaves him in the game too long).
With Gallardo, Gwynn, and Cameron due back soon, something has to give in the 25 man roster
