Corey, Aquino Designated

The Red Sox designated reliever Bryan Corey for assignment today to make room for Mike Lowell.  Also, the Orioles designated reliever Greg Aquino.

Corey, 34, has decent big league stats in 53 career innings but could never hold a job.  Aquino, 30, has been done in by home runs, walks, and injuries in his career.    He did manage to close for the D'Backs in '04.

Corey seems like a good guy but can't say I'm sad to see him go.

I thought Aquino was going to be the D-Backs closer of the future during that lost season of 2004. Shame injuries cost him.

What's the matter with Corey?

poor corey...

Bryan Corey is a good guy and a solid middle reliever. His downfall is that he has unsexy stuff. Given his age, lack of upside and having no options, he's tough to find a fit for.

A team like the Tigers or Dodgers could benefit from him in a 6th/7th inning role but they passed on him when he was DFAed earlier this year and didn't make a play for him after he cleared waivers. He should have a job at the major league level. If he doesn't find one, expect him back at Pawtucket going up-and-down like this for the rest of the year and ultimately going to Japan next season.
