« Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Johnson, Bonds, Piazza | Main | Kenji Johjima Signs Extension »
FRIDAY: No one wanted Johnson; he cleared waivers and will head to Triple A Durham.
WEDNESDAY: That was quick - Dan Johnson's time with the Rays is up. He's been designated for assignment in the wake of the Gabe Gross acquisition. Gross does make more sense for the roster spot.
There are only a handful of teams that might be able to accomodate Johnson as a regular. We'll have to see which club was second in line for his services (if any). At the least, he'd be a strong bench player.

I am not real solid on MLB's waiver rules and am pretty sure the Braves would be way down the line but anyone think that move makes sense for them? They could send Miller down or trade Pena and have Johnson back up Tex and be another lefty off the bench with power.

This could be a gift for the Blue Jays. I understand not wanting to pay Big Hurt's '09 contract, but they need his offense. Johnson would be an upgrade over Rod Barajas/Gregg Zaun at DH.
KC? Move Gload back to his familiar LF/1B/PH bench role. That would be an offensive upgrade for them.
And then of course the Giants. They have publicly stated that they would like a left-handed bat that can play 1B everyday ... and they have stated that they are not interested in Dan Johnson. OK.
I don't see in other natural fit that would net DJ regular AB's.

John Bowker should close the door on Giants wanting Johnson.
He already has 3HRs and is left handed. Has been working out very well at 1B so far.

I can see the Braves getting him to backup Teixeira, they dont really have a reliable backup!

He'd have to be a better alternative for the Mets than Carlos Delgado at this point. Delgado is finished, done, no mas, at the end of the road.

The Mets have to pick this guy up.. I mean, he'd have to do better than the .600 OPS and awful defense Delgado provides, right?

jfish26101 and da510nica:
My thoughts exactly. Brayan Pena is better as trade bait than he is as a backup for Tex, and we're already carrying an extra catcher. Trade Pena and pick up Johnson. The Braves finally have a bench bat capable of hitting a home run.

This is the second time I've seen the Blue Jays suggestion, which I don't get. He wouldn't be replacing Barajas, he'd be replacing Stairs.
My next suggestion is Seattle. Last year Ben Broussard got ~250 ABs caddying for Sexson, and they've got no such partner for him this season. Could work.

I suppose the Giants are hunky dory with Dan Ortmeier at 1b. I still think the two Dan's fates are intertwined in some way.

The Reds wouldnt want him. He walks too much for Dusty....Maybe the Cubs if they wanted to part w/ the slumping Ward. I could see the Astros/Yankees interested.

I thought this Dan Johnson retrospective at Tampa Bay.com was funny: http://is.gd/8rY
"Today is a sad day. An era has ended. The Rays won't be the same. The only comfort we can take is that someday, perhaps even in a new ballpark down by the water, we will all look on the outfield wall and see Dan Johnson's retired number, good ole No. 17. Or 22. Or ... what number did he wear again?"

"I suppose the Giants are hunky dory with Dan Ortmeier at 1b. I still think the two Dan's fates are intertwined in some way."
Ortmeier has started 3 games at 1B this year. That experiment ended almost as soon as it began. Aurilia has been their regular 1B, and as has been noted in this thread, they're now trying Bowker there.
Reds should be a non-starter considering their 2 current options at 1B (one vet, one rookie, both way better than DJ) are both LHB.
Yankees also a longshot; if they wanted someone with DJ's skill set as an alternative to Giambi they'd just call up Shelley Duncan who is killing AAA with the SWB Yanks.
Astros... maybe, I guess. I'm still pushing the M's for this one. Although so far in 2008 they haven't used any of my other bright ideas for them, so who knows.

In regards to the Jays connection, he wouldn't replace Stairs, as Stairs would spend more time in LF. So, perhaps, he'd actually be replacing Shannon Stewart. My argument stands, however. Stairs is definitely a defensive liability, but so is Stewart (even if less so). Johnson would provide enough flexibility and offensive consistency to merit that.
I recognize here that he wouldn't really be replacing Barajas/Zaun as the DH. I realize (and realized even then) that putting Barajas in the DH spot was never intended to be a long-term solution. I thought, though, that Shannon Stewart as an everyday LF was never supposed to be a long-term solution, too.

True. But here, look at it this way. We're pretty much considering LF and DH, the other positions being set (or not impacted by this discussion -- considering 1B locked down by Overbay), right? And we're all expecting the Lind callup. Where does that leave you? LF - Lind (LHB)/Stewart (RHB); DH - Stairs (LHB)/Barajas (RHB).
The weak spot in that alignment is the RHB DH -- a problem that DJ does not solve. Sure, over the next week until Lind actually joins the team, DJ is an upgrade to the lineup vs RHP over Stewart/Stairs or Stairs/Barajas. But I think it's still not a great fit. Especially considering Overbay's LHB so DJ doesn't offer any additional platoon advantage at his actual position on the diamond.

Could the Tigers be interested in Johnson? Sheffield is hurt, and he is thinking about retirement. Johnson could play first while Cabrera becomes the DH.

Strange move, and makes me question the Gross acquisition bigtime (he was supposed to make Haynes a AAAer again, not replace Johnson!!!) ~ but whatever…

the only thing i can think of is that this guy must have some unclaimed baggage. it just doesnt make sense that noone would have been interested in him taking a roster spot.

If Johnson rakes during his AAA stint, that might raise some eyebrows and move Johnson up a few pegs on some GM's wish list. He's like poor man's Casey Kotchman...he's got the talent to be a perennial 80-20-90 guy with good OBP but no wheels.

Is it just me or is there something a bit unsettling about MLB.com's headline: "Spilborghs to spill it all on TWIB"? Should I activate the V-Chip on my TV?

O MAN!!! im so pumped dude, now i get to go see and meet Johnson! yeah rays minors right down the street! haha thats cool. i saw Kazmir play before he got called up, man he was awesome. i need to go to more games...

Wow...I'm disapointed in Wren yet again. I just don't understand why we continue to keep 3 Cs on the roster when a LH bat like this could have been added to our bench to back up Tex. If he walked, maybe Johnson could have started next year. Oh well...
