Olney's Latest: Lidge, Shields, Eveland, Lahey

Here are some trade-rumor-tidbits from Buster Olney this morning:

  • For the first time in his career, Scot Shields was activated from the DL and rookie pitcher Rich Thompson was sent down to Triple A.  The Angels had hoped to keep the kid around but last friday's 1 inning, 5-run meltdown assured his ticket out.
  • A likely story:  Dana Eveland is making Billy Beane look smart.  He shut down the Indians for 7 innings yesterday, striking out 7.  When Dan Haren was sent to Arizona for 6 prospects, Tim thought the Dbacks won and suggested Eveland could be a back of the rotation starter of the David Wells-variety as was the common consensus around the league.  Eveland hadn't shown anything at the major league level; however, it seems Eveland might be realizing his potential (413 minor league IP, 8.84 K/9).  Then again, it's been one start and Olney notes Jhonny Peralta just thinks Eveland got lucky.  Time will tell, but Beane has a funny way of making time work in his favor.
  • As Brad Lidge comes back, reliever Tim Lahey is designated for assignment to make room.  Lahey's path is a bit of a head-scratcher.  He was selected by the Cubs in the Rule 5 Draft from the Twins before being claimed off waivers by the Phillies.  He's now back on waivers, and if he clears, he'll have to be offered back to the Twins who apparently do want him back.  So an imminent Twins/Phillies deal could be in the works.

Dana Eveland had pitched great for the A's in spring training with 3 wins and a 1.29 ERA in 5 games started to win the 5th spot in the A's rotation [4th for now since Chad Gaudin is on the disabled list.]I don't see a reason why Eveland can't have a good year. Eveland does have good strikeout stuff. And he also pitches pretty well for a lefty. I mean sure, he may not be the next Mark Mulder or Barry Zito [when he was good in Oakland,] But he should be a pretty good #3 starting pitcher if he maintains his control and throws strikes.

I have to agree that Eveland had never shown to be a top of the rotation pitcher when he was in the D-backs organization. It's one start...let's see how it plays out.

FWIW, there's been some speculation on Cub boards that perhaps Lahey could be returned to the Cubs as the PTBNL to complete the Monroe deal.

No clue if there's any validity to that.

Actually, the Rays drafted him and traded him to the Cubs. You might want to fix that. The Cubs and Phillies will likely battle it out for him.

keith law on eveland during spring...though yesterday against cleveland they had him topping out at 94mph. if he turns into a solid pitcher along with greg smth/brett anderson also in haren deal, A's would take it

Here is what he had to say about Dana:

"Dana Eveland continued his bid for a spot in the Oakland rotation with another strong outing, ripping through five innings against the Royals without giving up a run. His fastball was down a bit from his previous start, as he pitched mostly at 88 but threw some fastballs as low as 85 mph. But his secondary stuff was strong, including a curveball with good depth and a sharp slider that he used as his out pitch. Even more impressive was the presence of a clear pitching plan: get ahead with curveballs and fastballs, put hitters away with the slider, show the changeup to lefties and see if they'll chase it off the outside corner. Eveland reminds me a lot of Ted Lilly, with a little less fastball and an inferior changeup; both are lefties who reached the majors with shaky control and reputations as head cases, both feature four-pitch repertoires, and both have multiple weapons to get swings and misses. Lilly blossomed as a starter when he went to the big ballpark in Oakland and didn't have to worry about giving up fly balls. The same could be true for Eveland this year.

I like Eveland well enough, he's got a nice slider, but can we cut down on the Billy Beane ass-kissing around here? "Time will tell, but Beane has a funny way of making time work in his favor."

Come on. Bobby Kielty for Ted Lilly was an awful trade. Trading Aaron Harang for what, one year of Jose Guillen was a horrendous trade. He got jack crap for Tim Hudson who was one of the best pitchers in baseball at the time. Lately his drafting hasn't been so good. The Eric Chavez deal has not made time work in his favor. You'd think the guy has won 5 World Serieses in the past decade or something.

The Twins are going to send the Cubs a minor league player but both newspapers here reported at the time that the player would be a "marginal" or "low grade" prospect, not a quality prospect like Lahey.

Lahey is a quality prospect? Guffaw. Yeah, let me know how that works out.
