« Orlando Hudson Wants $15MM Per Year? | Main | Mets Close To Deal With Claudio Vargas »
THURSDAY, 9:51am: The Padres (and Giants) didn't claim Quintero; he passed through waivers and is headed to Triple A.
WEDNESDAY, 11:43am: The Padres aren't quite sure how long Michael Barrett's elbow injury will knock him out. He won't need Tommy John surgery, but he could miss anywhere from the minimum to two months. Kevin Towers contacted free agent Damian Miller as a possible backup to be used later this month. Miller wasn't able to find a job this winter. For now, the Padres will use the light-hitting Colt Morton behind Josh Bard.
One reader suggested Humberto Quintero, who was designated for assignment on March 31st. The Quintero situation should be resolved soon, but the Giants might claim him.

Is Doug Mirabelli still available after the Red SOx cut him? Being bored at work, I looked up Colt Morton's stats. 34 K's in 94 AB's in AA last year.

Kevin Towers would never bring Mirabelli back to the Pads. Towers learns from his mistakes and should be lauded for how intelligently he made the problem go away. Nabbing Josh Bard, Cla Meredith and cash for Mirabelli more than makes up for the loss of Loretta, who was much more valuable than Mirabelli back then. No, Towers has been there, done that. Lesson learned.

How about the Padres find someone who can drive in runs in clutch situations?
The catching situation is insignificant, there is a lot available in the minors. The scoreboard is more important-

Hittman its a great idea but there is one problem with it, who is out there as a run producer that can be had? Nady and Bay is Pit are not going anywhere this early in the season, and Murton is not a run producer. So who would we get.
I think we should simply call up Hundley and see what he can do at the major league level, for now. In addition we could be showcasing him off for a possible deal down the line.
Mirabelli would be a steal to stash away in AAA if you believe that the red sox would trade for him to catch Tim Wakefield, thus getting something for nothing. But the chances on them doing that again...slim, very slim.

The Pads have a very small operating income and little cash to work with. Towers' rebuilding strategy requires him to hold onto all his good prospects, offload several free agents to nab more compensation draft picks. Colt Morton makes a great backup for Josh Bard. He plays his position adequately and his tendency to whiff is actually a good thing, as it will lower the risk of GIDPs. On days Morton plays it will be sad to see low offensive production from the 8 and 9 spots, but most teams start catchers with dreadfully low OBPs anyway, so it's not like Morton would be all that much different with a bat than, say, Yadier Molina. And Yadier will ground into more double plays. If the #7 hitter leads off an inning and manages to get on base, Morton and the pitcher could bunt him to third for Giles to drive home with a single. Plus, Bard should be good for 450 PAs at least, so whatever damper Morton puts on run production, it will be quite limited in scope. Keep Morton and use what remains of a weak bargaining position to assemble a winning team for 2009! Just a thought.

Colt Morton is not a "light-hitting catcher" -- he strikes out a lot, but has recently shown huge strides in OBP and slugging. His defense is the knock against him, so he really isnt ready for the bigs. they need to find a replacement for both he and Barrett, who shouldnt have a major league job anymore.

Humberto Quintaro was accepted a trip to Round Rock today. His value seems really low after a great spring. His bat looked alot quicker, he lost like 15 pounds, and the man does have a cannon for an arm. Are teams looking at him or is he just going to end up a "AAAA" player?

Barrett is worth keeping at least until the division races shape up in the late summer, if only for his price tag. He's ok behind the plate and can hold his own in a rugby scrum. The Pads don't think Colt Morton is all that bad defensively. Nick Hundley, another organization catcher with a catcher's body has a live arm and can gun down baserunners. Bard is young and eager for a bigger role, so if he can stay healthy, the Pads don't have to be desperate for a backup C with MLB seasoning. I think Hundley and Morton should both get some time behind the dish to compete for the pitching staff's (plus all the coaches') affection. The kids are going to have to show some real communication skills to satisfy the quick-working Maddux. Pad hurlers need a battery partner out there, not someone who needs full-time mentoring. Apparently the Pads think Morton has it. I'm guessing the phone calls about D.Miller, etc. were more all about keeping updated on all options (e.g. GM doing the daily work of the job) than a decision to bring someone in from the outside.
