« Rays To Sign Longoria Long-Term | Main | Stark's Latest: Stanton, Hamels »
According to Susan Slusser, the Rays have claimed first baseman Dan Johnson off waivers. She expects him to put in time at DH while Cliff Floyd is out for the next month or so. Johnson moves from McAfee Coliseum (deflates LH HRs by 10%) to Tropicana Field (inflates LH HR by 4%).
You can read Johnson's story here. He should be a decent stopgap for Tampa Bay.

What, no press conference?

Good, no-risk move for the Rays. They did need another warm body 1B/DH type. Of course, this really just means Joe Maddon has another means to screw up my fantasy team. Then again, the fact that I'm relying on Eric Hinske for quality starts is a pretty poor indicator itself.

This is almost like their move to get Carlos Pena. They both posted similar minor league numbers and MLB numbers prior to 2007, they may have gotten another great hitter, or a guy that really isn't that good, only time will tell.

Well the difference between Johnson and Pena is that Pena was a top prospect for a long time with prodigious power. Johnson doesnt have nearly Pena's power numbers or his potential, so even though they look the same, they really arent.

NERBSTER,
If you actually check the numbers, Johnson has a .517 career SLG% in the minors in 7 seasons (572 games), while Pena has .510 SLG% in 8 seasons (671 games). So I would see they are extremely similar.
Johnson has played only in Oakland which is not a good park for LH power hitters, so maybe a move will improve his MLB numbers.
