« Heyman's Worst-Ever Free Agent Deals | Main | Website Validation - Help Wanted »
According to Tom Haudricourt, reliever Derrick Turnbow had his agent contact Brewers GM Doug Melvin about his current mop-up role. Turnbow has been marginalized following this winter's acquisitions of Eric Gagne, David Riske, and Salomon Torres. He's not requesting a trade, but he's not happy.
An uncharacteristic bout of good control in 2005 allowed Turnbow to save 39 games and earn a three-year extension the following spring. He's paid $3.2MM this season, the last of the deal. If my calculations are correct, he still won't be a free agent until after the '09 season. Turnbow has whiffed a ton of hitters over the last two seasons, but he can't find the plate. The Tigers and Braves are a couple of possible suitors if Melvin decides to shop him.

Considering Turnbow has an ERA above 9 right now, he should probably quit bitching about being in the "mop up role." How do you complain about your role after performing poorly in the same breath that you say that you know "you have to go out and earn your spot."

I think that the Tigers should look into a guy like this. When his control is on, he's a terrific pitcher. Although his control has gotten continually more inconsistent in Milwaukee, maybe with a change of scenery he could become a good option for them.
They could get him cheap and he could potentially be one of the best relievers out there.

I agree with ryan... the Braves already have too many guys in their pen who can't throw strikes. I don't think Bobby Cox has enough patience to take a chance on him.

Well when you're whole bullpen essentially consists of Will Ohman, Blaine Boyer and Jeff Bennett, then Turnbow suddenly becomes a more attractive option. With Moylan, Gonzalez and Soriano all hurt, this bullpen is seriously lacking in back of the bullpen options. Turnbow at least stands a chance of being a decent option, at least moreso than Royce Ring or Manny Acosta.

I think possibly if Braves can get him without giving up to much, it'd be worth the risk. He'd be a more fresher arm. He would have the stuff to fill in for Moylan/Soriano/Gonzalez and I believe he would actually benefit from a change of scenery.

Do the Braves really need another gas can who has no control? Their bullpen is filled with guys like that
In any case, the Braves need to get a good reliever, because without Moylan and Soriano, you could argue they have the worst bullpen in baseball....

I HATE WHEN ATHLETES COMPLAIN WHEN THEY SUCK, I HAVE HAD ENOUGH....turnbow needs to shut his mouth and pitch better, then maybe he will gain a more prominent role in the Brewers bullpen

Braves picked up an excellent fire-baller pitcher in Campillo recently and I don't think they need Turnbow at the moment. What I think they should do is definitely pursue Fuentes and automatically make him a closer. Moylan may be out for the year, and Gonzalez won't return for another 2 months. Picking up a guy like Fuentes with Soriano as a set-up man will bring some much added relief.

The braves def cannot take on a guy with control problems for their bullpen right now. I do however really like the Fuentes idea, not sure what the rockies would be looking to get back but would def be worth looking into.

The Braves wouldn't touch Turnbow with the Tigers' 10-foot pole. They're not big on picking up guys who win games for them when they're on the opposing team.

I was thinking out loud about Turnbow as a possibility, but I can see the points on him.
I do however like the idea of Fuentes. They might have to give something up in a bounty since, but it would work in their favor.

I have two words for any of you who think that a trade with the braves is a possibility...DAN KOLB. It's not about the fact that Turnbow sometimes struggles to throw strikes, it's that the Braves were burned by the Brewers in a trade for Kolby just a few years ago.

Can you spell "head case"? Turnbow is just one more example of a guy with a million dollar arm and a 10 cent head. A team not in contention might want to pick him up and take a chance on turning him around after suffering numerous losses in the process but a team with playoff aspirations would be wise to look the other way. Move on, nothing to see here.

Just read that hudson's fastball was topping out around 85, thats not good. First thing i though of was Mike Gonzalez last year. he was on the DL came back threw lights out and then bam one start throwing mid 80's. If the braves lose hudson for any decent amount of time they are in serious trouble

Wren needs to pick up that phone and call up Beane. Blanton and Street, problems solved ... in the short term.
Posted by: BaseBallz | April 17, 2008 at 09:31 AM
To my fellow Braves Fans, lets please not look ignorant.
BraveNewWorld, Campillo is not a fireballer.
thedeuce, Mike Gonzalez is a reliever, not a starter.
Not that I want to chastise you guys, as we are all rooting for the same side, I just thought I should clarify.
There is zero chance the Braves pick up Derrick "Whiney Pants" Turnbow by the way.

BaseBallz, how do you propose Wren does that without hurting the current team, or the team's future? I am open to hearing what you think, but lets face it, the Braves can hardly afford to give up the farm or any current roster players for a short term solution to a long term problem.
Posted by: Andy Braves Fan | April 17, 2008 at 12:14 PM
Just to clarify i never said Gonzalez was a starter. I simply said it reminded of when Gonzalez went out his last game and was only throwing like 85 and then was done for the year.

one start should have been one appearance my bad
Posted by: thedeuce | April 17, 2008 at 12:25 PM
for all of you braves fans complaining about getting burned by the brewers in the kolb trade...what exactly did the guy we got from you do for us? oh thats right...he was a headcase as well
Posted by: T_Unit14 | April 17, 2008 at 02:35 PM
If you look at Bows winning percentage when he comes in with one or no runners his winning percentage is better than Cordero's. Yost made this guy a head case. He was great for a while but if you put a guy in losing situation non stop....you will create a loser. Ned Yost is a horrible pitching coach. The guy is an animal....just needs some confidence....I'm guessing Yost didn't help him by getting 3 new reief pitches.. mental games work on some players and make some worse
