Vargas Unlikely To Sign With Mets

David Lennon of Newsday talked to Claudio Vargas' agent, Bean Stringfellow.  Stringfellow indicated that the Mets are not the right situation for his client.  That may be because the Mets want to send Vargas to Triple A, as Jayson Stark suggested yesterday.

The Mets are not completely out of the picture, but Stringfellow is looking for better opportunities and may get a contract for Vargas by the weekend.  Apparently a deal with another team was close but fell through.

The Angels could work, as could the Mariners if they want to use Miguel Batista as their closer for a while.  The Astros, Phillies, and Braves should probably consider Vargas as well.  That's all just my speculation, though.

hahahahahahahaha bean stringfellow. how do you survive childhood with that name?

Bean Stringfellow! How on earth does he have any clients.

Agent: Hi, I'm Bean Stringfellow, and I'd like to represent you.

Player: BWAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Bean Stringfellow is the most silly, British-sounding name I've ever heard.

I don't see the Braves looking in on Vargas, even with Hampton's problems. They've got James and Bennet who can fill his rotation spot (and Reyes if they're feeling ballzy).

I thought Lowe was the front runner to take over closing duties while Putz is out??

You are right on with your assumption the braves should go after vargas. With Hampton going down and smoltz and james both having injury concerns, vargas could definately be a reliable fourth of fifth starter, and once smoltz comes back, he should be a durable option in the fifth spot. Even though it is consistiently pointed out that the braves pitching depth is a strength, the fact that with that depth we have a ton of question marks is a definite weakness, and reliability is still a definite concern

I wish my name was Bean Stringfellow.

Is there another Austin Powers movie coming out any time soon? Bean Stringfellow would make a perfect villian for him.
