« Angels Open To In-Season Talks For K-Rod | Main | Ryan Braun Contract Details »
Hanley Ramirez's six-year, $70MM deal will be officially announced Saturday. MLB.com's Joe Frisaro has the details of the contract.
Basically the deal pays $23.5MM for Ramirez's three arbitration years and $46.5MM for his first three years of free agency. It's also been confirmed that the deal lacks no-trade provisions. I know we always label these young-player long-term deals as team-friendly. But this one takes the cake. That's not a knock on Ramirez - if I had his talents I'd certainly exchange maximum dollars for immediate security. How about you?

Yeah, it is easy for us to say he should have waited. If you are going to give me a choice between a gaurunteed 70 million, and a possible 230 million in 4 years if nothing goes wrong, I am taking the 70 million. Its not exactly chump change, and its not like this will be his last contract (hopefully).

By the way, this is random, but funny as hell. Check it out, Jason Giambi wears thongs under his uniform when he is trying to break out of a slump. Classic.

No doubt. Unless I'm coming from plenty of money, I'm taking $70MM over the possibility of $140MM every time. Whatever regrets you have about not doubling your contract in a best case is nowhere near the regret of passing on $70MM if you get hurt and never make more than a couple million.

To play devil's advocate, I would have to disagree with the length of the contract. Ramirez had the opportunity to set new levels in arbitration-much like Ryan Howard. If he had gone to arb, it is hard to imagine him getting less than Howard, considering the .330 average and 30+HRs. Signing a deal to go through arb years AND FA years will prove to be a mistake in Hanley's checkbook. He had the opportunity to be the real "Next $200M" player, and because he has had no real risk of injury, the security of $7.5M/yr of the guaranteed contract seems insignificant to the potential he could have earned 3 year younger coming into free agency.

B Fu,
I already bagged on your equally ridiculous comment about Braun's contract so I won't get into it again.
But "no real risk of injury"
These guys are professional athletes who ask their bodies to perform completely unnatural acts over and over again on a daily basis. A base running collision, a caught spike, collision with an OF on a popup,..........
His risk of injury may not be any more than every other player in the game, but it is very real.
