« Giants Aiming For Position Player In Draft | Main | Rangers Leaning Toward College Pitcher In Draft »
According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports and Mike Phillips of the Miami Herald, Jacque Jones has reached a contract agreement with the Marlins. It's a no-risk move for the first place Fish, who will pay him the pro-rated league minimum. Jones, 33, hit .165/.244/.253 in 90 plate appearances for the Tigers.
Rosenthal and Phillips seem to disagree on Jones' role. Rosenthal says Jones will be a fourth outfielder and bench bat and notes that he'll begin at extended spring training. Phillips sees Jones as the team's starting center fielder.

I think he'd serve better as a verteran bat off the bench at this point.

Couldn't disagree more. Jones is notorious for his slow starts. Look for him to start heating up and carrying that Marlin club to a divsion crown. Btw, NL East, you better hope they don't go after pitching before the deadline.

I dont know which part is funnier, the idea of the Marlins winning the division, or the idea of Jacque Jones carrying them to it. The NL East better hope they dont go after pitching? I guess, because it must be nice for the rest of the NL East to feast on that awful, dreadful, brutal pitching staff. You are right though, the idea of adding a league average starter to the rotation juggernaut that is Olsen, Hendrickson, Badenhop, and Nolasco is absolutely terrifying. I am still wondering whether you were kidding or not, but I dont see how a team with a horrible, horrible pitching staff and an unbelievably sickening defense combined with a good, not great offense is winning anything.

The Fish off to a good start. I wouldn't read too much into it. They will move permanently into 4th place in the NL East by early June. No way they can keep up with the Phils, Braves, & Mets all season.

jacque jones will start for now, but don't forget about cameron maybin. as much as i love jones and the way he plays hard and has fun, maybin is the future and as soon as the marlins falter the job will be his.
