According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, the Rangers have discussed a long-term deal for center fielder Josh Hamilton internally as well as with his agent. Hamilton, 27, has to be considered the current frontrunner for the AL MVP award. No pair of teammates in the AL has combined for more offensive production than Hamilton and Milton Bradley.
Hamilton's arbitration years will be from 2010-12. The Rangers shouldn't be in a huge rush, as Hamilton will make less than a million bucks in '09.

They should lock him up. The man is a flat out badass with the bat.

The scariest part about all that is the "What if" scenario of him never getting so far into the drugs. He might still be on the Rays roster and that would just be sick enough to get "The Network" to show something other than NY/BOS.

Give him a blank check. You've done worse, Texas.

I would assume any contract would have that clause, because without the dollars would be lower and the risk greater. I would believe any team would maximize his revenue if they were protected from risk.

I could see several of the years being vesting options based on PA's. Because, obviously, if he's playing, he hasn't fallen back into drugs. And I think as popular as he is already and how much the team loves him, if it was injury related they'd still take the option.

So, if they do sign Hamilton what do they do with Botts? Shouldnt they put some kind of mutual option on this deal?
