Ryan Braun Contract Details

Tom Haudricourt has the details on Ryan Braun's new extension.  It's a tricky one, because it's not yet known whether Braun will be arbitration-eligible after the 2009 season.  It won't be known for sure until November of '09.  If he is arb-eligible at that time he'll make an extra $6MM.

It's looking like Braun will earn $4.5MM (including a signing bonus) for his three pre-arb years.  Then he'll get $18.5MM for his three arb years (less than 80% of what Hanley Ramirez will get for the same slice of his career).  After that Braun gave up his first two free agent years for $22MM.  That's also significantly less than Ramirez will receive his first two years of free agent eligibility.

I will never understand "Ryan Braun signs with Milwaukee for 8 years" from Braun's standpoint. The team obviously can't afford its pitching (Sheets is gone after this year), which will take them out of contention for another 3-4 years. Either this guy loves sauerkraut, or he loves fat chicks. You decide.

Seriously everyone just pretend we are talking about The Riot but 4 years younger, and you know with talent. Discuss.

Yeah, yeah, yeah...anyways...

Did anyone watch Baseball Tonight this evening? The Cubs have the best record in baseball, have scored the most runs, and have allowed the second fewest runs in the NL.

So they win again today and their story is the last one of the night? What do the Cubs have to do to get any respect from the east coast bias? The Yankees are one of the worst teams right now but they are mentioned first each night. ESPN is a complete joke.

Wait...how is this a Cubs topic?

For starters how about win a playoff game this year and then when they do that, how about a world series.

Took the words right out of my mouth Tim.

B Fu, seriously??

He's 24 years old and never has to worry about money ever again. If he falls out of bed tomorrow and can never play another inning of baseball he and his family will never have a financial worry for the rest of their natural lives. If he's smart, and it seems like he is, he's set up his family for at least 3 generations. If you can't understand that I would love to see the silver shovel that you were fed with as a child.

One minute fans are ripping guys like Cole Hamels for calling 500K a low blow and then they rip on guys like Braun for not being disgustingly greedy. Sure, he's probably giving up some money on the front end. But if he continues to play at this level throughout this contract he can basically hold milwaukee for ransom later.
