« The Center Fielder Market | Main | Heyman On the Rockies and Holliday »
Earlier this morning we saw a report that indicated that Erick Threets may be available for the right price. Now, according to Andrew Baggarly, the Giants have made most of their middle relievers available as well as a couple of pitchers in Triple A.
The Giants have informed other clubs that relievers Tyler Walker, Jack Taschner and Vinnie Chulk are available in fair-value deals. The club also is soliciting offers for Erick Threets and Brad Hennessey, who is starting for Triple-A Fresno.
Walker, Chulk and Hennessey are all arbitration-eligible at the end of the season. Chulk is having the best season of the group with a 132 ERA+, though Walker has experience as a closer. Hennessey is 3-1 with a 3.48 ERA in four starts for Triple A Fresno after being demoted and converted to a starter.
Brian Sabean seems to be going against comments he made only two weeks ago when he suggested that the Giants would not trade away their veteran players during the season.
Baggarly indicates that this shift is due to the emergence of young pitchers as well as the earlier-than-expected demand for relief pitchers from contending teams.

Also lets not forget that no one bought that BS line.

They're making Taschner available, but at a high price, because Alex Hinshaw appears to be a stone-cold killer and a keeper for years to come. Getting Taschner won't be easy though. Hennessey has always wanted to be a starter rather than being forced into a reliever role, so he could be a good pickup for a team needing a #5 or a spot starter to eat up innings. Chulk has done better and better of late, and routinely hits 92-93 on the gun; losing him only makes sense if the return is worth it. Threets will probably blossom somewhere else.
I suspect that Sabean will have two rounds of firesales this year: the first will take place in June for contending teams to grab these pitchers. The second round will be in July before the deadline to move Winn, Durham, and remotely Molina if they can get back real value.

If the giants were willing to swap stadiums, they might actually get some interest.

OmegaMan, that's not fair. It is considered by many one of the best stadium in the country.
But I agree with Steve. The Giants will have two or three different times where they trade off all the excess parts.
I see Molina and Winn as the best assets the Giants have. And because of that I think Sabean will wait until the trade deadline to deal them, because that's when teams will get a little desperate and over pay for them. At the deadline I could see Winn getting sent to the Twins, (if they are still in contention) Cubs, Cardinals, and maybe the Rockies. The Twins are a possiblity if they part with Trevor Plouffe and a low level guy. I see a good prospect and a low ranked guy going to the Giants in any deal for Winn or Molina. I'm sorry I can't go in depth about the other trades. I got a dealine I have to meet.

I have to imagine Taschner will be in high demand if he's available. Nice lefty pen arm that would likely come cheaper than Fuentes or Marte.

AT&T is about as fair as it gets.
Park Factors
(multi-year): Batting - 100, Pitching - 100
(one-year): Batting - 100, Pitching - 100
Over 100 favors batters, under 100 favors pitchers.

As noted, on the whole it is a very fair park. Still, there's clearly an acculturated belief that because it isn't a CWS-style bandbox that pitchers who throw there are no good.
On the bright side, any team dumb enough to think the same may be dumb enough to look at, say, Chulk's nice ERA instead of his mediocre peripherals. I'd trade Chulk in a heartbeat for a B- prospect in A-ball.
