The Catcher Market

As we near June, trade rumors will start to pick up.  It's always fun to try to find teams with matching needs.  With that in mind, I'm going to profile available players at each position on the diamond.  Today we'll start with catchers.  Let me know in the comments if you have anyone to add.

  • Ramon Hernandez, Orioles.  The O's are playing surprisingly well, but Hernandez is not hitting.  He makes $7.5MM this year, $8MM in '09, and has an $8.5MM option for '10 with a $1MM buyout.  I imagine the Orioles would like to move that contract.
  • Gerald Laird, Rangers.  The Rangers aren't out of contention quite yet.  When they are, it'll be time for Laird to step aside for Jarrod Saltalamacchia.  Laird, a Boras client, is under team control through 2010.  He's having an improved year at the plate.
  • Ronny Paulino, Pirates.  Once Ryan Doumit returns in June, the Bucs can at least consider moving Paulino.
  • Paul Lo Duca and Johnny Estrada, Nationals.  Couple of bad signings...if either veteran returns to health he could be traded for scraps.
  • Paul Bako and Javier Valentin, Reds.  Bako had a nice April and is hitting well above his career norm.
  • Yorvit Torrealba, Rockies.  With Chris Iannetta seemingly living up to his potential, Torrealba becomes a relatively pricey luxury.
  • Bengie Molina, Giants.  He's a solid bat and is signed for '09 at $6MM.
  • Michael Barrett, Padres.  Currently on a rehab assignment, Barrett could be one of several veterans purged by the Padres.

WOuld someone really take up Bako?

How about Miguel Montero? With Chris Snyder playing so well, AZ might be willing to listen to offers.

Hernandez is slumping heavily now for the O's. When he's consistent, he's a .265 bat with 80+ RBI potential. Baltimore however doesn't have any options now (Quioz and Ben Davis aren't the best.)

They should hold onto Hernandez until Matt Weiters (who's tearing up Single-A) arrives.

How about Brayan Pena or Corky Miller?

What about Michael Barrett of the Padres? Obviously they are not going anyhere and if his rehab continues without a hitch, I could see him being moved for another prospect that they will never see at the big league level.

how about greg zaun and rod barajas, im pretty sure zaun is on his last year on his contract

What about Kelly Shoppach? The Indians wanted to hold onto him because he was batting well last year as Victor Martinez's backup, but this year his numbers are down.

"how about greg zaun and rod barajas, im pretty sure zaun is on his last year on his contract"

Zaun is also old, cheap and has little offensive appeal other than OBP. He either resigns with Toronto or is a back up next year.

Along with Michael Barrett, I'd say Josh Bard belongs on this list. With Kevin Towers ready to tear the Padres apart, and his comfortability with Luke Carlin & Colt Morton ,with Nick Hundley in the fold - both of Barrett & Bard could be used to restock the farm.

After getting rid of them, I could also see KT going after Gerald Laird for some more reliability in front of and behind the plate. The Padres tried to get him as part of the Chris Young/Adrian Gonzalez awhile back, so the interest is there...

thekeptfaith.blogspot.com

Although it's kind of a longshot I've wondered if Dombrowski is going to consider trading Pudge. Yes, he has a hefty contract and no, there aren't a whole lot of options save for Brandon Inge. But in order to even get a draft pick for the guy they have to offer arbitration that he would certainly accept. At this point the only thing the Tigers get for him in '09 is eliminating $13m from their ledger. Not a terrible thing, but I have to assume they're considering a trade.

Java you're correct in that they should wait until Weiters is ready, but some scouts are saying that could be in July.

I don't know if the Pads have interest in Laird but I do know that one of either Barrett or Bard is gone, and its probably the latter since he has more value. The Pads do have Hundley (who has good power), Carlin (who's something of a defensive specialist) and Morton (who I don't know what they think of him) in AAA and AA respectfully. As such I believe they're set at catcher and won't be looking to acquire one of these.

bard could be of interest to the Yankees with the age/injury concerns of Posada and Bard's ability to handle a young pitching staff as well. Maybe a package deal of him and Maddux for a young outfielder?

What is some team made a nice offer for Jeff Clement?

I think Brayan Pena should be put up there. He'd make a nice bat off the bench for somebody since we have Norton now.

He wouldn't be an immediate impact, but Bryan Anderson. If the Cards are still in contention come the all star break he Molina is locked up long term.

Bryan Pena hasn't caught an inning all year. (and very little last year). He's a decent hitter without a position. I think the Braves have made a mistake by not letting him catch a little to boost his trade value (he ain't great behind the plate, but would probably be okay as an occasional backup.)

Who said that Weiters will be ready in July? Is that the consensus? Mcphail is saying they are going to take it nice and slow with him.

"Barrett & Bard could be used to restock the farm."

That is laughable. Both contracts are up at the end of the year (Bard's last year of team control). Barrett is still rehabbing from a tough injury and Bard has no value. Colt morton just needs to be cut. A 25 yr old 6'6 guy who can't produce at AA is bad. But I'm afraid to bring up Hundley since he has been hovering around the mendoza line all season long at AAA.

The D'Backs could get a big haul if they packadged Montero & a bullpen pitcher. I can't see Arizona leaving that situation alone.

"What is some team made a nice offer for Jeff Clement?"

Clement can hit, but he looks to be a pretty terrible catcher defensively.

Molina is interesting. Pretty affordable, World Series experience, defensive stud and he can handle the bat. I also bet he would go for a cheap extension.

If the Pirates can trade Ronny Paulino for a bag of baseballs and a water cooler I would consider it a pretty lopsided deal in favor of the Bucs.

Paulino would be interesting.

Tim, when is the site going to change? I mean when we go away from white on black.

On a side note... Tim, nice call on Colon's line tonight of 5 IP, 2R, and the W... of course it was the most likely right before the line of 0.1IP, 6R...

what about dougy mirabelli??

Can you see the Angels moving Mathis or Napoli with Budde moving into the backup vacancy?

Jesus, I'll personally pay a team to take Corky. That man simply cannot hit nor run. At all. It's like Jason LaRue morphed together with Tony Eusebio. Freaking dreadful.

"Can you see the Angels moving Mathis or Napoli with Budde moving into the backup vacancy?"

Budde just isn't enough of a hitter or defensive player to justify such a move.

"what about dougy mirabelli??"

Unless the team has a knuckleballer, his bat is just too much of a liability these days. Then again, he wouldn't make a bad backup for Russell Martin, given that he would hardly play and help out in the 'pen.

Mirabelli? Are you kidding me? He's bad enough that Boston would rather eat his contract and start Kevin Cash once a week, and he hasn't played in 2 months. Dougie's not worth a dime at this point, sad as it is to say.

Today's developments change the outlook of Michael Barrett... if Bard's ankle is indeed broken, neither he nor Barrett will probably be traded. But the San Diego fire sale does need to start very soon.

LONGSUFFERING...TRY GOOGLING ZAP COLORS.

asm, short of moving Adrian Gonzalez, Jake Peavy, Khalil Greene, the Chris Young prior to him eating-a-baseball (may get gun shy on the mound now), Greg Maddux, and Michael Barrett for an offensively minded team needing a backup catcher, they don't have a lot left to get rid of, sure they can't dump the catchers, but who says they need to, they could be moving pieces now and sign what they need in the offseason, below I give my thoughts on what they could realistically get and how they can build for being a contender in two years, their only real chance at doing it!

I hate to be the ass here, but if they start the fire sale, what does that have to do with Bard or Barrett being replaced with sh*tty catchers, you bring up your AAA catchers and move everyone else through the system to cover holes, it's not like they're playing for self-respect, they have already lost theirs!

I think a rebuilding effort is important for the Padres, but they have to clean house in Orioles-esque/Billy Beane fashion. I think these would be the trades I would make...

Brian Giles has moderate value at this stage of his career, with the money he is getting paid, and what tools he still has working for him, but I would trade him to a team needing a lefthanded hitting outfielder with a decent arm who can still field a little and hit a lot.

I would say Detroit, but they aren't in contention and that division looks too solid for them to get in to the playoffs by stealing wins from KC and the ChiSox, so while the central team won't go far in the post season, they will be splitting a lot of series very close and bringing the other teams down closer to .500 ball. Detroits out of the playoff picture, so no deal.

Maybe San Francisco would be a good fit and it seems that they may want to start looking at a more long term option at 3B, so Kevin Kouzmanoff (3B), Brian Giles (LF), Tadahito Iguchi (2B), & Chris Young (RHSP) in a trade for Matt Cain (RHSP), Randy Winn (CF), Jose Castillo (2B), & Travis Denker (IF)

Then they trade Adrian Gonzalez (1B) to the Mariners for Juan Ramirez (RHSP), Cesar Jimenez (LHRP), Bryan LaHair (1B) and Travis Scott (C).

They could then move Khalil Greene (SS) to Baltimore for George Sherrill (LHRP) and Alex Cintron (SS). This gets Khalil back on the east coast where he wants to be. Also solves some of the long-term issues surrounding the bullpen with Hoffman's age and Sherrill lives in Salt Lake City, so he'd be easy to re-sign. Cintron will become the super sub infielder, but until then will be the band-aid at SS.

Follow that with shipping out Greg Maddux (RHSP) to their division rivals, the AZ D-Backs for [most likely the first listed] Mark Reynolds (3B) OR Chad Tracy (3B) & Max Scherzer (RHSP). This leaves Headley to move to 1B obviously with their acquisition of a 3B, but I think that's his long term home anyways.

Finally, they can trade Shawn Estes, Heath Bell (RHSU) to St. Louis for Joel Pineiro (RHSP) and Chris Duncan (OF).

So the players coming and going look like this:

LEAVING SAN DIEGO:

Brian Giles (OF)
Chris Young (RHSP)

By the way, I'm not a Padres fan... As for their catchers, I think it's a heal up and then assess who needs a backstop, my first inclination would be for Barrett to NY since the Yankees' "O" sucks and Posada looks destined to DH most of the time. I imagine Bard could be the longer, but still not "long term" solution to Cash and sending Cash to SD temporarily fills the whole and you ask for an A level pitching prospect, done deal...

Cash as in Kevin Cash of Boston...

Just one thing there as far as Bard to Boston. The reason he's in San Diego is because he couldn't catch Tim Wakefield so the Red Sox had to trade Bard and Cla Meredith to get Mirabelli back whom they had traded for Mark Loretta. That being said if it doesn't work out with Varitek this off season Bard might be a good solution fill to that hole via free agency.

I can't imagine the D-Backs paying close to that price for Maddux. It would seem that Scherzer alone is over-paying for the Mad Dog.

almost every one of those padre deals would be a serious pdres fleecing of their trade partners.

I could see a Chris Young to the Cubs deal. Something like Gallagher, Murton, Cedeno or Marshall, Pie, Cedeno. Gives them young cheap players with upside.

Shoppach might be the best back-up catcher in baseball and could certainly start for many teams. He's not off to a great start but such is the life of players with irregular playing time. CLE didn't want to deal him because he's insurance for Martinez but I'm not sure they can afford that insurance any longer. They have to do something about the offense and Shoppach would be a nice piece in a package for a big bat. With Bard down maybe the Padres are interested. A Shoppach plus a prospect for Giles and a return of Kouz might make sense.

seriously baseballguru? if you can manage to get those trades done than the pads better get on the phone with you to get you to work...

kahlil seems to get a lot of undeserved respect on this site...came up as a top prospect at the beginning of the decade and hasn't done anything...no way sherill moves for kahlil by himself.

As for Adrian, pads need to hold on to him.

as for maddux...no way he is worth anywhere near your package to the Dbacks...and sherzer isn't moving...with the value that dominant pitchers with experience have...why move a top pitching prospect who has proved he can play with the big boys...especially for a 40 year old pitcher with little left...

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahhahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "guru" time and time again you prove you're an idiot not a guru.

The giants made it quite clear in the off-season they wouldn't trade Cain or Lincecum, they are the future. And that was after an offer of Alexis Rios! Now Brian Giles and Kevin Kousmanoff are better than Rios and made the Giants wan't to trade? That's the dumbest thing you've ever said.

Then they would get for Max Scherzer AND Mark Renyolds for Greg Maddux? The Diamondbacks mangement wouldn't give Scherzer to the A's for a young ace, they gave the A's an extra player just to not have to give up Scherzer and you think they'll give him and their 3B of the future for an old rent-a-player? You are the biggest idiot on the planet if you think that would actually happen. Why don't you try reading articlles about the teams you post these ridiculos b.s. filled posts.

“hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahhahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "guru" time and time again you prove you're an idiot not a guru.”

… Would you expect anything else?

I do really love the stupidity of that Giants/Padres deal though: Padres trade unwanted Vets/Stop-gaps (Iguchi and Giles) and bring in unwanted Vets/Stop-gaps (Winn and Castillo), the Padres have to include a youngster (Kouz) in their attempt to bring in only one youngster (Denker) and the Young for Cain portion takes the cake for “WTF is the point” proposal of the year… Such a trade just makes absolutely no sense for either side, but whatever ~ that’s “guru” for ya…

"no way sherill moves for kahlil by himself."

Sherrill has been good this year, but really had only 1 other good season, and that was as a setup man. Greene is an everyday guy who, if he remembers how to look at a few pitches like he did in his rookie year, can hit for power and defend well. Even at his current level, given Greene's age and what is still upside, you really can't say that Greene for Sherrill (and even Sherrill plus someone) isn't a fair deal

First off, Chris Young is one of the best pitchers in the game(top 25), for Cain that's a good deal and it gives them the chance to improve an offense with a .400 OBP guy and a 3B who's better than their current 3B of Castillo. You also have to look at Denker as an extra part but it allows the Padres to get younger maintain youth. Castillo becomes the 2B for the Padres, I'd move Kouzmanoff to 2B, but I don't think he's agile enough. Winn is solid in RF but is a better fit for CF, the Giants are loaded with OF and have no answer for 3B, getting a veteran guy in there to help the young guys would be beneficial. Zito isn't able to coach his younger teammates because he sucks, everyone else in the rotation is young, Chris would give them a guy they could lean on to take the pressure off Lincecum. AND THE TRADE WAS LINCECUM FOR RIOS, if you are going to talk SH*T ATLEAST KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT! Also, Cain has never been "UNTOUCHABLE" JUST EXPENSIVE, LINCECUM HAS BEEN "UNTOUCHABLE." I KNOW A THING OR TWO ABOUT THE GIANTS BECAUSE MY BRO-IN-LAW IS A HUGE GIANTS FAN!! HUGE!! We've had many talks and he said that Winn is expendable as is Cain. Plus let's just go off what Cain did last year versus Young, not a whole lot of difference in production, but for whatever reason the Giants can't score behind Cain, so it doesn't matter if he gives up 2 runs every 7 innings if the team loses 2 to 1 or 3 to 2. Kouzmanoff is a possible long term solution at 3B for them and Young means they don't lose anything in their rotation. Giles is about equivalent to Winn except 50 OBP points and less range, not a ton less range, just less. This makes the Giants more veteran, gives them the ability to fill out a DECENT lineup card and they won't lose AS MANY close heartbreaking games. It also still allows for them to move Frandsen to the show to be their long term 2B and with Bowker at 1B and Kouzmanoff at 3B, they are able to insert Eugenio Velez in SS next season since his defense is so good it would help solidfy the infield and I think his bat will also come around, by next year you'd also be able to replace Giles with Ortmeier in LF and the team has youth and talent all over, an improvement at catcher and this could be the next dynasty in the NL and may compete with the D-Backs for years.

I know about Sherrill he pitched for the Mariners, is he a capable SU guy?! Yes.

Is he a top of the line closer at 32 with underpower stuff?! No.

Does a top relieve have equal vale as an average hitting, good power, strong defender? Arguably yes. To say that Greene isn't worth a little bit more as a position player than a bullpen guy, probably unreasonable.

Also do the Orioles have 20 capable arms including a soon to be returning and healthy Chris Ray?! Yup.

Do they really need a lefty that only throws MAYBE 91 mph who only 4 years ago was finding his way out of the independent leagues when they CLEARLY need a long term solution at SS?! You bet.

I think it's pretty clear you have an issue with the writer and not with the trades or you are just ignorant. Pick your choice. I'm not saying either way, but I think you know if you're stupid.

By the way, the second to the last was a trick question with a sarcastic answer, maybe you didn't get that, so I thought I would fill you in.

wan't is not a word AriGoldisaG. the fact that your idol is a slummy agent from a t.v. show says all we need to know about your intelligence and opinions.

By the way, only two years ago Scherzer was an unquantified prospect who has show decent ability recently in FOUR GAMES and as the adage goes, sell high. Also, this is AZ's year, so you put a rotation together of Webb, Haren, RJ, Mad Dog, and Davis and you can give them the WS Trophy now!

Oh and Reynolds has 59 Ks and a .226 AVG when I wrote this, not exactly lighting it up for a guy on pace for 25 HR. So let's be realistic with Tracy coming back I thought it would be painfully obvious they would rather keep Jackson and Tracy at the corners.

However in another threat Tim & Co. put up on here, they explained that one of the two 3Bs will have to go, currently Tracy coming off an injury has far less trade value than Reynolds and honestly, I think that the Padres wouldn't be getting the good end of the deal for a couple years in these trades and it's a long-term solution, maybe you think that talent matters over achievement, but it doesn't work that way.

That's why Tejada, Bedard, Beckett all were traded for MORE than they were worth because sometimes the talent doesn't pay off for the loss of achievement, it's your scouting department that makes trades work for your benefit and these guys I, that's right IIIIIIIIII think are good value in return, most baseball guys would probably say I'm selling the Padres players off cheap, but hey as goes the territory with under achieving as a team.

Oh and Shoppach could be a good pick up for the Padres too... I have thought about where he could go, but never really considered San Diego, but that's actually a pretty solid deal. Maybe there are some young relief arms and Barrett could get it done, it appears as though the Indians are not worried about playing an incapable defender behind the plate and seem destined to carry three catchers as Victor Martinez appears to be a bat without a position. Maybe sending Hafner to San Diego can revitalize his offense and sending Headley to the Indians can get it done. Headley may have more upside at this point, but you can't under-estimate what Hafner could bring to the Padres, plus he's a likable guy and could be a good veteran presence to build their core of young players around.

By the way, this crap about his elbow... I'm sorry, but arthritis goes away when you work the joint more NOT less. It's also something to take notice of that he's never been the same hitter as a pure DH and even if he can only go for 130 games at 1B, what he could do over that stretch would be far better than most could in 150-160 games. Also, how much WEAR-AND-TEAR can you actually put on an elbow from holding your hand out at chest level 7 times or so a game to catch a ball or by throwing the ball across the infield that many times?! I think this is just stupid and it's an excuse to keep Garko at 1B for whatever reason.

Oh for questions involving arthritis refer to Darkstar, he'll tell you about how he got rid of it in right wrist by constantly using it... Take shots at me and I'll keep taking them at you Princess!

One more thing, did anyone see that Khalil Greene had 27 HR and 97 RBI playing in PETCO FREAKIN' PARK?! Undeserving my ass! He's not in the top 10, but that hardly says anything in a League that has Ramirez, Reyes, Rollins, Tulowitzki, Jeter, Tejada, Renteria, Drew, Young, Furcal, Betancourt, etc. Yes Betancourt is better, he's a very good fielder that will be exceptional in a couple years, he's constantly hitting around .290 and will eventually become A LITTLE more patient at the plate and learn how to use his almost Ichiro-esque speed to steal bases, he only came over from Cuba 3 years ago and he's been one of the hardest in the game to strikeout, considering the Cuban baseball league is equivalent to A ball, it's clear that he's going to be an exceptional player and already is more valuable than Greene, for all that bias talk, just realize he's had a HR taken away at the fence twice this year, so technically he's over 20 XBHs based on what he's done with the stick and that's while suffering from a 10 game slump already and he's a second half player, so he'll be much like a Jimmy Rollins type in a couple years and is already a servicable version of him prior to his 2007 season.

over 20 XBH = just under 20 XBH, mental slip, was thinking something else while I was typing.

BaseballGuru,

Please find something else to do with your time, or at least make interesting (as in, better than a late night talk show caller) comments and/or trade proposals. As it is, it is annoying, and a waste.

Back to the issue:

Iannetta does indeed seem ready.

Also, I'm not so sure B. Molina is really available. He's one of the few proven run producers the giants have, and the giants are extremely thin behind him. Next year would be the year he would be dealt, if at all. By then, the Giants would have a better idea of how fast of a track Posey is on, and if Sandoval has made any strides defensively.

Wow Scherzer for Maddux? I don't see the point. Have you seen how Maddux pitches at Chase Field? His ERA would balloon up right about to where RJ's currently is and since the DBacks aren't scoring more than 1 or 2 runs a game now I don't see the motivation.

I'm a DBacks fan and I had to laugh when you said a Webb, Haren, Maddux, Davis rotation would lead to a WS appearance. The DBacks are barely above .500 and if it weren't for the NLW being a crappy division this year we'd be sellers at the trade deadline.
