« Odds and Ends: White Sox, Mackowiak, Garcia, Rays | Main | Draft Roundup: Wallace, Alvarez, Scheppers »
According to John Manuel of Baseball America, the A's have reached an agreement with 16 year-old Dominican righty Michel Inoa. He'll receive a $4.25MM signing bonus, a record for an international amateur (excluding Cuban defectors). Manuel reports that the Yankees had a tentative deal in place for $2.7MM at one point but agent Adam Katz stepped in and raised the price.
This signing is akin to drafting a top high school player here in the states, only Inoa is younger. Oakland's farm system has improved drastically in the last year or so.

I have a feeling this is the beginning of a lot of 3 mil+ deals for amateurs. Going to shoot up like draft deal prices did several years ago.

No Principles. I am glad that the Yankees did not get into bed with Katz. that could have been effected negotiations stateside (Cole/Boras, Marshall, Lassiter)

Probably. Disgusting really. Redsox will probably starting doing it and Theo will be a 'genius' for spending $100M on 20 players and found one decent player.

the yankees may have gotten out of this one... but were the ones that gave wily mo pena his. (the previous record at 2.3)
by the way on a somewhat related note, anyone know how much the red sox paid boss moanaroa?

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take that! the A's are gonna be unbeatable in 5 years. Think of a rotation of Inoa, Trevor Cahill, Brett Anderson, Gio Gonzalez, James Simmons, and then some. Honestly Tim your statement that the A's system has improved drastically is an understatement. That team will be unbeatable:
LINEUP:
C - Kurt Suzuki
1B - Daric Barton
2B - Jemile Weeks
3B - ? One weakness in the system
SS - Bobby Crosby
LF - Ryan Sweeney
CF - Carlos Gonzalez
RF - Travis Buck/Aaron Cunningham
ROTATION:
1) Michel Inoa
2) Trevor Cahill
3) Brett Anderson
4) Gio Gonzalez
5) James Simmons
BULLPEN:
Fauntino De Los Santos
Henry Rodriguez
Santiago Casilla
C'Mon. That's an awesome team. And YES! I am very much bias towards the A's. But I do agree 4.25 million for a 16 year old is a lot.

A's farm system/prospects
bad:
barton/buck disappointing at mlb level so far
gio cant pitch on the road, good perpherals like K's
DLS tj surgery
Hrod dominating high A, but struggled in AA
herera/robnett/powell/mitchell/bailey etc struggling some
good:
resurgence of once struggling prospects: Mazzaro/Lansford/Italiano/Sulentic/Pennington/Baisley/Recker etc
breakout of cahill/doolittle
players from 07 draft + haren deal have boosted his farm system

elmedius:
I believe the signing bonus for Moanaroa was $87,000 plus a college scholarship.
SoxProspects.com seems to confirm that: http://www.soxprospects.com/players/moanaroa-boss.htm

Could not help but to laugh out loud at Ari's post. What percentage of those guys do you think will make effective ballplayers?

Don't Ruin his Dream!

Poor Eric Chavez, even his team's fans have given up on him.

Ari, your enthusiasm makes me laugh when Im watching TV AND when Im reading the comments.
Posted by: Laputian | June 30, 2008 at 08:09 AM
hey ari, could they move mark ellis over to third, or maybe move jemile, and what happened to jack hanahan? if all those guys you posted for a roster pan out, they'll be amazing
Posted by: fgsfsfbbbrd | June 30, 2008 at 08:21 AM
If you want to come up with you dream one, Ari, here's mine. 6 years from now:
C-Jesus Montero
1B-Jeter ;]
2B-Robinson Cano
3B-A-Rod
SS-Angelini
LF-Jose Tabata
CF-Austin Jackson
RF-Justin Upton
1-Chamberlain
2-Hughes
3-Brackman
4-Betances
5-Cole
Bullpen-
Sanchez,Robertson,Melancon,Cox
No offense, but I like mine better.
Posted by: daneptizl | June 30, 2008 at 08:36 AM
No offense, but this is an Oakland thread.
No offense, but the thought of a 40 year old Jeter being productive at 1B is just laughable. I love how you couldnt find a suitable guy for RF so you just assume you go get the sickest young outfielder in the league right now.

"If you want to come up with you dream one, Ari, here's mine. 6 years from now:"
Finishing in 3rd place for the 6th year in a row, with an annual payroll of 400 million dollars.

I was under the impression that Billy Beane only signed college level pitchers.

"I was under the impression that Billy Beane only signed college level pitchers."
Well, it may not be long before we find out that Inoa is actually 22, which would at least make him college-aged.
Posted by: DunkinDonuts | June 30, 2008 at 09:50 AM
LOL, guys calm down. I was actually doing it for 4 years from now, but you're right, I didn't know who to put in RF, so I switched it to 6 years and added Upton (and forgot to subtract Jeter). Anyways, it's also not too tough to read the part where is says "dream" team. But that's OK, just ignore it since that wouldn't help your argument, right? It's too bad even your dream team can't be like this. No offense.

The funniest part about this signing is that Yankee Fans and Management feel like they are getting screwed! A's outwit, out negotiate, and outbid the Yankees!!! Oh, The Irony!!!!
If there is indeed a God, please let Michel Inoa stay healthy, and help the A's beat the Yankees in Game7 of the 2013 World Series!!!
Posted by: jpkinney7 | June 30, 2008 at 10:15 AM
AriGoldisaG,
How old are you. Judging by your reaction to the signing and your conclusion jumping on the A's prospects and future line up I would guess you're no more than 16. I was like you once then after years of seeing prospects get hurt or simply not panning out I realized nothing is guarenteed. There is no thing as a can't miss prospect in baseball. Some day when you get older you'll realize this.
The chances of all 16 players you named being with the A's and playing well in five years is .0000001%.

What are you, 13?
If the above report is correct, then what Katz did was indeed sleazy. But  that's how the international market is.

Chicago,
I am 25 years old and I am engaged. But I think it's funny how everyone is biased towards their own team and can get excited about deals for their team. But if it's the A's forget about it. BTW I said I was very Biased.

Yankees fans calling Katz sleazy is even more ironic. This is funny stuff.

Even God will have a hard time letting two AL teams play in the World Series. Genius.

Just a quick note: I haven't posted anything since the inception of the new format for the site. Tim, it looks awesome, thanks for a great website to come and slack off during work, and talk baseball!
Being an A's fan, I am excited about this signing, and just like the rest of everything in this world, prices go up! I'm glad that we got him, because even though he's only 16, the potential is there. Just like Chicagobubble said, there is no such thing as a sure thing with baseball prospects. But the upside makes it worth it.

Another classic line from ARodSucksAtLife
keep em coming
Posted by: bucs_lose_again | June 30, 2008 at 01:08 PM
Yep, called it! Beane saves so much dough you knew he was going to get Wolfe to open up his wallet for Inoa.
I read somewhere that he could be mlb-ready by the time he's "19". As an A's fan, this is going to rule.
I think the future A's will look something like:
1B: Barton
2B: Weeks
SS: Crosby?
3B: J. Guzman
C: Suzuki
LF: R. Sweeney
CF: Gonzalez
RF: Cunningham
DH: C. Carter/S. Dolittle
Rotation: Harden-Anderson-Cahill-Simmons-Inoa
An aside: how horrendous was the Haren deal for the D-bax really? Factoring in that it actually cost them 7 players including Carlos Quentin, who they decided wasnt worth a shot because they had ERIC BYRNES (lololololol), and the A's have 3 of the 6 up at the bigs and playing incredibly well, and the other 3 are also doing very good in the minos (Brett Anderson might even get a Sept callup?), the dbax blew it, hard.

AriGoldisaG,
I don't care about bias towards ones team. That's part of being a fan. It's your irrational expectations that ALL of those will work out AND be with the A's five years from now.
If you're 25 and have been a baseball fan since your youth then you should realize by now that the attrition rate for prospects is VERY high. Your expectations for all those A's prospects is, once again, irrational. There is no way all of those players will be good major league players AND with the A's five years from now. How many of those players do you honestly expect to pan out and be all star caliber? You'd be lucky if it's 3 or 4 out of the 16 you named. And even if 3 or 4 panned out to be all star cailber how many players have the A's had to trade or let walk via free agency over the last 5-6 years due to budgetary restraints?
I don't care about your bias, I'm just asking you to be rational.
Posted by: chicagobubbleblog | June 30, 2008 at 02:22 PM
Chicagobubble,
I don't think Ari is saying all of those guys are going to be all-stars.
He's saying "that is what the team will look like in 5 years."
He's already half right, the only offensive players not on the current lineup are Weeks/Cunningham. Ari is mainly speculating on the pitching.
As far as pitching is concerned, that is where the strength of the A's depth is. We can only hope that Cahill, Anderson, Gio,
simmons, De Los Santos, and now Inoa all pan out...They probably won't, but even if only a couple of them do, that wouldn't be bad, because they all have extremely high upside.
Also, Beane has stated that the chances are likely to increase of him retaining more players in the future with a new stadium in the works.
As an A's fan, I feel confident that the "3 Aces" of Mulder, Huddy, and Zito will not be the last trio of A's starters to grab headlines. Especially if we can hold on to Harden and he stays healthy.
zs190: If Chavez is in the lineup in 5 years than that will be pretty sad for the A's. Maybe a DH by then but he won;t hold up defensively.
Posted by: dtownmbrown | June 30, 2008 at 03:57 PM
Definitely do not blame the kid. i would want as much money as possible too
Jeter will most likely become an expensive (glorified) single hitting ss/dh, but there is nothing wrong with that
Posted by: ArodMVP217 | June 30, 2008 at 06:50 PM
"Who said I was a Yankees fan?"
You didnt have too. The way you talk about Melky Cabrera having trade value kind of tells us all we need to know.
"If the above report is correct, then what Katz did was indeed sleazy. But  that's how the international market is."
Yeah, really, a guy trying to get the most money for his client. Who woulda thunk it. The dirtbag.

"An aside: how horrendous was the Haren deal for the D-bax really?"
Mmmhmm. A team favored to win their division trading a bunch of blocked prospects out of their absolutely loaded system to land an ace to pair with their other ace. And he is posting a sub 1 whip and a sub 3 era pitching in a hitters paradise. Man, what a horrible trade.
And what does trading Quentin to CWS have to do with anything?
