I can't see the Cards giving up the organizations two best prospects for a rental, and I don't see them ponying up the 18 to 22 mil a year to sign him either. Its a good thought...but I would be shocked.

I still think Shapiro needs to settle for a package with Hughes or Cano. The Tribe are still poised to compete the next few years, so the MLB-ready guys will need to be ponied up.

So, this kinda sounds like Shapiro is resigned to the idea that the Indians future maybe brighter without Sabathia. Have they even made a good faith effort to try to sign him? I know every athlete before or during a contract year states something about wanting to stay with the team, but I thought Sabathia might have been serious enough to take some small discount.

"I still think Shapiro needs to settle for a package with Hughes or Cano. The Tribe are still poised to compete the next few years, so the MLB-ready guys will need to be ponied up."

No way are either of those two included.

Dayn Perry's an idiot. He didn't used to be, but his mock blockbuster series is nuts, every single time.

They offered him 18 mil a season to stay. If he wont accept that for the team that he says he loves to play for, than he is an idiot with a plane ticket to New York. Better them than the cubs.

Dayn Perry really is terrible. I've really thought about canceling my subscription to BP because that guy's on their staff now. It's like putting Tom Green in a Scorsese film.

btw, Dayn Perry is an admitted Cardinals hack, so take whatever he says about the Cards and any other NL Central team with a grain of salt.

"They offered him 18 mil a season to stay. If he wont accept that for the team that he says he loves to play for, than he is an idiot with a plane ticket to New York. Better them than the cubs."

...its not the cash, its the length of contract. Cleveland doesnt like to go over 4-5 years and CC is possibly wanting as much as 7. Still possibility they meet somewhere though, 6 + obtainable option/buyout type deal...

In Perry's defense, it is damn near impossible to construct a hypothetical trade that pleases fans of both teams involved.

I thought Dayn Perry was a Cardinals fan? Jesus Christ, what a dumb trade. 12 years of Rasmus and Anderson for 4 mos of Sabathia. Sweet.

“In Perry's defense, it is damn near impossible to construct a hypothetical trade that pleases fans of both teams involved”

…But when attempting to make such a package, do you not think it would be wise to atleast mention spots on the diamond where the other team doesn’t have their offensive threats already entrenched? Anderson would be blocked by Martinez (and even Shoppach), Rasmus by Sizemore and 1B/DH are locked in longterm as well… No matter how you slice it, this deal doesn’t really fit Cleveland even if it is nice looking prospects…

They would make room for Rasmus and put him in a corner outfield spot. Like it or not Dark, the Indians would surely take that deal, and would be absolute fools not too.

"In Perry's defense, it is damn near impossible to construct a hypothetical trade that pleases fans of both teams involved."

I'm not a fan of either team and not familiar with Perry's trade hypotheticals other than this one, but this deal would be one that the Indians would accept in a second and that Cardinals fans would rue for years to come. A young, cheap potential superstar under team control for several years and a nice prospect in Anderson for a 4 month rental or 20 million dollar a year player. The Cardinals would need to lock him up for 5-6 years for this deal to make any sense at all and even then if Rasmus becomes a star, I don't see it as a good deal for the Cardinals. It boils down to the expected production of Sabathia vs. the potential production of Rasmus. If Rasmus plays to his potential, the Cardinals never win in this deal.

"They would make room for Rasmus and put him in a corner outfield spot. Like it or not Dark, the Indians would surely take that deal, and would be absolute fools not too."

Yeah, I know that Cleveland would probably put Rasmus on a corner, but its not taking full advantage of what he brings and, from my understanding, his bat might not play as well there. Then, Anderson just doesnt make that much sense while the teams actual desires are not even touched one in ant way. Just because top names are included, it still doesnt mean it just instantly makes sense ~ and such a deal just doesnt make much sense for the Tribe.

Even without the perfect fit I bet the Indians would accept such an offer. Shapiro could spin off Rasmus for an infielder if he really wanted to.

While I would love to give get a left-handed power arm like Sabathia, I dont see the Cards giving up their two best prospects. Right now I would feel better about giving up Rasmus and Anderson since Ankiel appears to be the real deal in CF and Anderson is blocked by Molina anyway. The Cards would have to get Sabathia signed to an extension before giving up the players. Also, how much money would it take to retain Sabathia. Probably more than the Cardinals want to pay and there's no way you give up those two players for a rental player. I think the Cards may shop Rasmus and/or Anderson, but I highly doubt this deal happens.

Do you think that Jhonny Peralta will be dealt?

"Even without the perfect fit I bet the Indians would accept such an offer. Shapiro could spin off Rasmus for an infielder if he really wanted to."

...Oh yeah, I think it would be a very tempting offer ~ but it doesnt address the teams needs/wants at all (Stud pitcher/true slugger, ideally for infield) and would mean that other deals would need to still take place. Easier to listen to an offer like that, then get another team to match it with prospects which you can actually use... Such a deal would easily fuel a crazy buyers crazy and be a great fallback to have ~ not so sure it’s the one which would get it done though…

What if Jhonny Peralta was in the deal? The Cards desperatly need a SS

I live just outside Cleveland, in Akron. I go to about 15 AA games each year and 10 MLB games in Cleveland. If there is one thing you learn from being in this area, it is this. You never know what Mark Shapiro will do. My best bet is this is what will happen if C.C. is traded. The Indians will first try and trade him to an NL team. The last possible deal will be to trade him to New York or Boston. The Indians will not trade him to an AL team that will re-sign him. That would completely stupid on the Indians part since you would have to go through C.C. to win future playoff series'.
Anyway, the Indians will target the best possible package of players, whether they are in AAA or Hi A. The Indians have a great development system and they are more than willing to push their players up the system quickly. The Indians are still in win now mode over the next 2 years but they can still stay in win now mode by taking younger players. They can go out and get free agents. Make a play at Ben Sheets and/or A.J. Burnett and the Pitching is back into it. And if the Indians realize that Fransisco and Choo are no better than 4th outfielders, then they should make a play at Dunn.
The Indians are not that great at drafting players. They are however, great at finding talent in other organizations and in Latin America. The Front Office realizes this and knows they are better off trading C.C. then getting draft picks in return. Look at who on this team is a daft product compared to international signings, and acquired in trade. It is amazing!!

In fact, to show you never know what Mark Shapiro will do, I could easily see this happening. The Indians trade C.C. to an unnamed team. That team sends 4-5 low level, high upside prospects to the Orioles. The Indians also kick in a prospect or two. The Orioles send B. Roberts and G. Sherril to the Indians.
It would seem like trading C.C. would be throwing in the towel, but by getting back a switch hitting 2B and closer, it makes the team better for the rest of this year and all of next year.

"The Indians are not that great at drafting players."

Actually, they are...not so much in regards to position players but pitchers. Sabathia, Sowers, Laffey, Lewis on the big club and then top prospects such as Miller (possible bust) Lofgren, Huff, S. Lewis. Plus they drafted Guthrie but botched his development. But in regards to CC, I say keep him for the season. If you move a pitcher to acquire some help then trade Byrd. Keep CC and make a run and try to sign him in the off season.

"The Indians are not that great at drafting players."
"Actually, they are..."

...I would take the middle ground of that. Sadly, Cleveland has also found themselves with very few DPs the last 3 or so years, and that has put them into a situation where their hand was forced a bit more. Plus, the Tribe will be more likely to draft high-bonus guys right now so they will meet their window.

I do agree 100% with the "you never know what Shapiro will do" thing though ~ but I know that whatever they bring in will be to make a big difference for the club instantly, not a couple years down the road. Trading CC would be a big blow to the club, a blow which has to be made up for by bringing someone else in ~ a low minors guy might be included, but it will center around ML-Ready types in the teams needs... (or be something tricky like you mention)

When I mean drafting players; and I am not counting players that aren't on the big league team, I mean players that have had a true tangible value compared to latin american signings and trade acquisitions. Example: their is a big difference in quality between the group of carmona, betancourt, martinez, peralta, sizemore, lee (these players were latin america signings and trade acquisitions). compared to drafting where you have sabathia, garko, fransisco, sowers, laffey.

Per ESPN, Wang out for at least 6 weeks with foot injury. Look for a bidding war between Yanks and Red Sox....again. I see a repeat of last offseason's Santana to the Yanks/RedSox nonsense all over again.

I read somewhere the Yankees were considering bringing up McCutcheon to take Wang's spot ... I hope that's for showcasing.
Personally, I would give Giese a chance as long as he is at least one start separated from Mike Mussina; they seem to have a similar makeup.
Give Giese a chance and bring up that David Robertson to fill in the bullpen spot. I believe he's earned it.
Or, let's see if Alan Horne is truly "next."

"Look for a bidding war between Yanks and Red Sox....again."

I doubt it. I just don't see the Red Sox going all in to get Sabathia. No matter what people say, I think Beckett would see it as a slap in the face if Sox spend 20M on another pitcher. If anything, I see them going into the bidding strict to drive up the price.

Two things...if you look at it, the make-up of the Tribe is similar to the early 90's in regard to how the talent was acquired. I think the only difference is that Shapiro is more apt to hang on to player the team developed instead of trading them for veteran help (though he has and these coming months will also test it). Second, I highly doubt the Cards will even offer that trade, I am sure the Mark Mulder trade still lingers in their minds. If Rasmus and Anderson have any potential to come close to Haren and Barton then there is no way they do that.

"I doubt it. I just don't see the Red Sox going all in to get Sabathia."

They will do it if for one reason and one reason alone....to drive up the price for the Yanks. Lets be honest, they didnt have any "real" intention of getting Santana last year either. But what they did want ( and succeed at ) was creating a bidding war with the Yanks, making the Yanks give up alot in return for Santana. Obviously neither team would bite on certain prospects and Santana is a Met. But I highly doubt the Red Sox just sit on the sidelines and make acquiring Santana easy for the Yanks, no chance.

If the Sox enter the bidding war to jam up the price for the Yanks it won't work. Everyone will see through that ploy.

The Red Sox don't need Sabbathia (of course any team could use a stud pitcher). They have other, more pressing areas to address.

Sabathia for Rasmus and Anderson? Forget about it. The Cards would never make that deal. Young players are too valuable because their cheap and under control for 6 years. I'm 100% positive Cleveland would jump on that deal or one very similar, but I'm also 100% positive the Cards would pass. If the Cardinals really want Sabathia, they can sign him this offseason with the boatload of money they have coming off the books.

"I still think Shapiro needs to settle for a package with Hughes or Cano. The Tribe are still poised to compete the next few years, so the MLB-ready guys will need to be ponied up."

@first it was hughes and cano, now it is hughes or cano... keep going, jaja
