« Odds And Ends: Draft Recap | Main | Chipper Jones Prefers To Remain With Braves »
Jerry Crasnick comments today on the Reds new youth movement and what that might mean for Ken Griffey Jr and Adam Dunn.
Crasnick notes that it will be difficult to replace Dunn's production, but wonders if he just needs a change of scenery. Dunn does not appear to have any desire to enter negotiations on an extension and still seems to be harboring some bad feelings towards the club...Although Crasnick doesn't specifically speculate, it sounds as if the Reds would be best served trading Dunn.
As for Griffey, Crasnick believes that Griffey might be willing to renegotiate his $16.5MM '09 option if the team is willing to add a second year on to the deal. However, Crasnick is not sure the Reds are willing to keep Griffey around until he is 40. Crasnick does speculate that even though the Mariners poor start eliminates the possibility of a trade during the season, the M's may be willing to bring Griffey back in '09 as a free agent to play first base, especially with Richie Sexson's contract set to expire.

As a Reds fan, Griff's time is up, it is time to become a DH. His legs no longer can handle being an OF.
As far as Dunn, with the drafting of Yonder Alonso, if we can sign him, it will allow for Joey Votto to move to LF solving that problem.

look for the reds to sign dunn to a 2 to 3 year extension , griffey gone after this year and i think the reds are going to try alonso out at 3rd

I don't see Griffey wanting to switch to be a first basemen.
Joey Votto in left field will only be a minor upgrade to Adam Dunn, defensively.

"i think the reds are going to try alonso out at 3rd"
No way. Alonso isn't even a good defensive first baseman, I seriously doubt he could even be an adequate defensive third baseman. I'm not even sure why the Reds would want to do that, with Edwin Encarnacion and Juan Francisco in the minors.
I think its just DOWNRIGHT SHOCKING that the Reds didn't draft Gordon Beckham. Even though they have Frazier and Valaika, Beckham has shown far more potential to be capable of being a good defensive shortstop. Combine that with his hitting skills and he looks like a potential stud. The Reds were just so damn close..
C- Devin Mesoraco
1B- Joey Votto
2B- Brandon Phillips
3B- Edwin Encarnacion
SS- Gordon Beckham
LF- Moving either Francisco, Frazier or Valaika here. Not really sure which one would best profile as an outfielder.
CF- Drew Stubbs
RF- Jay Bruce

Griffey as a first baseman? I can't imagine he would ever agree to that, no way.

The thought of Griffey stretching those fragile hamstrings to catch a throw at first is darkly comical. Why wouldn't Seattle DH the guy and/or put him in an outfield corner?

if david ortiz is out for the season (which it dosent look like he is, but if he is) dunn would be a great mid season replacement. (even tho his swing isnt perfect for fenway, and it could end up taking a few homers from him. would coco plus a prospect get it done? they could put coco in center and move bruce to left (or even better put griffey in left and let bruce take over right field).

Unless that prospect is Buchholz no it wouldn't be enough.
Honestly I've heard Reds fans wanting Buchholz and Lowrie for Dunn.
Why trade Dunn for a package that is worse then the two draft picks that he'll bring back as a FA.

I think Dunn to the Red Sox for Jed Lowrie and another good prospect would get it done. Or Lowrie and Crisp. Lowrie's better than a sandwich pick and Crisp is better than a 2nd round pick.

First of all, yet another analyst saying what I have said since this past offseason, griffey renegotiates his option for a 2-3 year deal.
Scribbletone:
you explained the beckham rationale yourself with valaika and francisco
secondly, drew stubbs is not an outfielder of the future, he will be out of the system by the end of next season...hasn't panned out worth anything in the minors...Chris Heisey has shown more potential playing right next to him in LF for the past 2 seasons

Valaika has shown very little, with Fransisco playing third, and fraizer easily able to play OF, and not all always pan out. beckham was easily the best available player, and the Reds messed up by not taking him.
Stubbs just needs to steal bases, draw walks, and hit .260 and play defense like he always does

Griffey is fine in right or left. He can still throw and doesn't need nearly his old range. In fact, his Range Factor last year (for those who care about that stat) was WAY above league average.

GmblngPtchr20:
Apparently Valaika heard you...he just went 5 for 6 yesterday...are you serious when you make a statement like that? okay...he struggled in his first couple of weeks at chat...but he had phenomenal numbers in last year in DAY/SAR and to start the year in SAR...there is reason that he has moved up faster than Stubbs, who people on this site seem to love
2007:
Dayton .307, 20 doubles, 3 trips, 10 homers, and 56 rbi in 78
Sarasota he struggled in the jump again, but proved his worth in 2008
.363, 9 doubles, 7 homers, and 31 rbis in 32 games...so I would say that he has more than earned a little respect
