Indians Sign Rincon, Graffanino

According to Anthony Castrovince at MLB.com, the Indians have signed reliever Juan Rincon and infielder Tony Graffanino to minor league deals.

Rincon, 29, lost effectiveness in August of '06 and pretty much never recovered.  It's easy to try to tie his decline to his May '05 performance enhancing drug suspension, but he was solid for the rest of that season.

Graffanino, 35, is trying to work his way back from knee and ACL surgeries.

First the Indians signed Jason Tyner, now they signed Juan Rincon. Who's next, Lew Ford or will they trade for Luis Rodriguez? Thanks for picking up the Twins garbage though!

if we sign a 100 washed up players, one will work out eventually. This is a typical off-season for the tribe. TwinChargers, you forgot about your best washed up player, Casey Blake. He has been the cornerstone of Eric Wedge's teams.

Ya know, with all the minor-league stop-gap guys the Tribe is bringing in like this, I am really beginning to feel that they are planning on buying someone before too long. I had mentioned the other day that sell-mode for the Indians could very well be packaging vets and prospects for a longer term upgrade, and these stop-gaps can fit the hole left from departing youngsters… Will be interesting to see if anything happens…

Minor league depth move..maybe Rincon can even get it together and help the big league pen. Dark, I hope youre right with this possibly foreshaddowing a move.

they are signing all these veterans because the tribe's AAA /AA teams are already depleted. Rincon may be able to help late in the year or even next year.

As for the deadline, I am expecting shapiro to get a close to MLB ready starter because of the injuries and the upcoming free agent loses to their starting rotation. It would be nice if they get another relief pitcher or a legitimate corner outfielder to match up with sizemore and francisco.

Who do you see them buying, Dark?

GoCleTribe,

Yeah, I hear you about the depletion going on down in Buffalo ~ but it still seems like a bit much don’t ya think?

Mile,

No clue, and not going to even try to speculate ~ last time I even gave a quick example of the type of deal which could be made I was instantly jumped on for it being stupid by a couple Cubs fans/trolls… (despite saying “I’m in no way saying this specific deal”).
