According to the Denver Post and New York Daily News, the Mets have expressed interest in Rockies closer Brian Fuentes. Adam Rubin says nothing is imminent. Troy E. Renck points out that the Rox turned down an offer of Aaron Heilman during the winter.
Fuentes figures to be a hot commodity this summer, so the Rockies may take their time and field offers. The Mets do have a few decent prospects aside from Fernando Martinez.

Hmm yeah this makes sense..
The Mets have massive holes at first and left field, and their rotation looks like it really needs an innings eater. Lets go get a set up man. Unless they can get him for like Heilman and a prospect (which I doubt they can), then they need to use their young guys to add a starter or a hitter.

@scribble that was an extremely stupid comment. The Mets have a much bigger hole in the bullpen than at 1B and LF, and the rotation looks GREAT right now. Santana, Maine, Perez, and Pelfrey all have looked great recently.
Hitting has not been the Mets problem recently. They have had leads in something like 6 of the last 8 games, and the bullpen blew almost all of them.

If the Mets are talking to Colorado about acquiring a reliver, they might as well inquire about Taylor Buchholz.

scribbletone. that makes absolutely no sense. The bullpen right now is the worst part of the mets. the starters areall great and the offense has been fine

Michael John,
I'd rather have Buchholz too. Fuentes' stats are deceptive. He throws in the upper 80s/low 90s and his pitches are all on the same plane. He can be extremely hittable. Recall that he lost the closer's job last August and Corpas was the closer during the Rockies' unbelievable run at the end of the year.
As a Braves' fan, however, if the Mets want to dump what's left of their farm system to pick up Fuentes (and then sign him to a long term contract), then who am I to object?

Scribble, yes, the Mets could absolutely use a good setup man. They presently have a solidly constructed bullpen, but no real setup guy. Duaner will never be the same, Heilman cant get it together. Fuentes would be a very nice luxury. That said, yes, the Mets absolutely have the biggest holes to fill on offense, and anybody that thinks anything different is kidding themselves. This offense has been anemic, horrible, sickening, nauseating, take your pick. Besides Reyes, this team has been a brutal offensive team. Without Church and Alou, this team is a bottom tier offense. David Wright has been downright terrible. Outside a blistering start, he has been very bad at the plate. So far in 2008 he has looked more like a platoon partner then the all star he is. Beltran has actually had a decent season with the stick, and hit in to tons of bad luck. Between the number of screamers and scorchers he has hit right at people, and the times he has been downright robbed, he has probably lost around 20 to 30 total bases. Delgado has been an embarrasment, but he picked it up just a little bit of late. Castillo has been killed by Met fans, but has actually been okay offensively, posting a 375ish obp in the 2 hole. Alou never plays, and Church was mishandled and now the Mets are without their 2008 MVP, which is killing them. So yeah, the Mets can obviously use an upgrade in a corner spot offensively, but they would also gladly accept any bullpen help they can get.

“has been an embarrasment, but he picked it up just a little bit of late”
…Its funny the difference a year makes. I remember last year you claiming that Delgado would come out of his early funk and get back to numbers which would be more respectable. Now it seems you don’t have that same level of confidence, despite his doing exactly as you said he would just 12 months ago.
Its gotten to the point that I almost feel like a Delgado apologist ~ pointing out that which people are either ignoring, too lazy to look up or are too biased to see. There is a striking similarity between last year and this though ~ a trend which is quite easy to see:
07 pre May 1st ~ .188/.262/.260
07 pst May 1st ~ .274/.348/.489
08 pre May 1st ~ .198/.297/.323
08 pst May 1st ~ .273/.346/.460
…Its not a guarantee of course, but I think that trend would be enough for me to think real long and hard before just up and claiming 1B needs an upgrade… Someone to take some LH ABs away from him is fine, but a real upgrade would be costly and those resources are probably best spent elseware ~ like that Bullpen…

Yeah, its definitely strange. Dark, with Delgado it is also more then his line sometimes. Like I have said countless times, he just seems to stubborn to adjust his game a bit to compensate for his lost batspeed and declining power. He also doesn't seem to have a gameplan when he bats, though this could be an indictment on the entire Mets roster. They just go up and swing. But Delgado seemingly never comes through (this year atleast)in a big spot and if a pitcher makes a good pitch he has almost no chance to make solid contact. This also wouldn't be as much of an issue if Delgado was batting 6 or 7 where he should be when the team is healthy and not protecting (or not protecting) Beltran. Intersting about Delgado's last 2 aprils, because check out the april of Delgado's first year as a Met in 2006... .298/.391/.617.
I would be fine with a .275/.350/.450 line the rest of the way from Delgado, but I do have my doubts. There are times when he looks truely awful up there.

…Ahh, but the crazy thing about that 2006 season? Comes in this:
06 pst May 1st ~ .258/.354/.533
…A tad bit more power, but we all will probably agree that’s more than likely a realistic difference between a 33/34 and 35/36 YO…
Anyway, yeah its tough to say ~ but you know I love trends so… :)
