I agree that Drew was worth the money. I think I'm one of few who never doubted his return to form. Look at beckett. struggled his first year with boston turned out to be their ace. Coming to the Red Sox or Yankees is like coming to a different league. There is a different set of expectations set on you and you know how short the leash is and how fast especially hank steinbrenners trigger finger is. You are expected to come in and win. If you don't, the fans dont stop showing up because thier team is still good. but you will certainly hear your boos and "you weren't worth the money" and other lines that start to get to your head. This is mainly done in New York as Boston fans seem to be a little gentler to their struggling players but both beckett and drew have heard the questions surrounding their struggles in their first years with boston respectively.

How is Guerrero a waste of salary? His contract would be more than worth it even if he retired tomorrow, considering the production he has given the Halos in his time. Further, he has been on a tear, hitting over .500 so far in June.
Also, where are Russell Martin and Brian McCann on this list?

"This is mainly done in New York as Boston fans seem to be a little gentler to their struggling players..." You should probably ask Mark Bellhorn what he thinks about that. Boston media and fans can be just as harsh and fickle as New York media and fans.
I'd like to see Drew keep up this production before declaring it to be a good signing. I wasn't on the I hate JD Drew banwagon last year simply because of fierce loyalty, but I will say I'm very happy to see he's stepped up much more than I anticipated he would.

i was wondering what would the mets scout be looking at on both teams(excluding the Pirates outfield)???

That's hilarious.
I hope something horrible happens to Julio Lugo.

Yeah sure Drew is worth the money... wait no I disagree. He has been with the Red Sox for over a year and has 3 months of Slugging over .430. He hit well last June too. But that was followed by not much. Until September when he hit well too. So 23 HR and 103 RBI in about a season and a half is worth $21 mil? Sounds like something Bavasi would say.
Damned Typekey. Give me a Sign in error when I just signed in.

Making fun of Carl Pavano is like flipping someone out of a wheelchair. Sure it's funny, but honestly, what's the challenge?

It knew you were about to say something stupid. Why not read the article and find out what someone who has a history of insightful intelligent baseball posts coupled with provided evidence has to say?

AA,
passan states in the introduction that he did not include "players who have yet to hit arbitration. Baseball rules artificially depress their salary, and the credit due to teams for signing them doesn’t apply." so that rules out martin as he doesn't hit arb until 2010 and mccann would be in the same position if he didn't sign his big contract, which i think is what passan means by "the credit due to teams for signing them doesn't apply." the way i see it, he is pointing out extraordinary circumstances. an overpaid veteran who is underperforming or an underpaid veteran who is playing well. either way, his intent is to focus on veterans whose contract doesn't match their production. it's easy to make a list with guys like mccann or martin because you could say that just about any young player with their ML experience is underpaid. the norm (though we have seen exceptions this year particularly with longoria, braun, etc.) is that a young player plays a few seasons at the min, becomes arb eligible, and then signs a big contract.

Whats stupid about it? Take the month of June out of this and last season and he is about as useful as Gary Matthews Jr. Go look at the numbers.
Yeah thats right he has 11 HR 71 RBI for the rest of his time in Boston. Wow! He can hit in June. Good for him.

Take a players two best months away from him and he isn't very good. Okay, got it. My mistake.

He has been carrying the Sox while Papi has been down. Good timing, clutch, or just another June; you decide. Personally, I don't give a rat's ass because JD is just fine in my book. And he was fine last year, as well, as he was tending to a higher priority.
After all this guy's been through in Boston I will state matter of factly that anyone who does not appreciate his attitude and skill simply sucks.

Passan is right about everyone on that list. With all those Dodgers on that list, I am shocked Ned Colletti still has a job. If someone ran my company as poorly as Colletti has run the Dodgers, he would have been fired by now.

"If someone ran my company as poorly as Colletti has run the Dodgers, he would have been fired by now."
What I cant believe is how much the Angels and Dodgers combined have spent for those OFs (Hunter/GMJ/Anderson/Vlad/Jones/Pierre) ~ esp when both teams have better young players in house already... I really think the two teams must have a betting game going on with eachother; one which includes the phrase "I can waste the most money" being said at the end of each move...

Newberg had me until "And then, when the Yankees reluctantly agreed to include both Phil Hughes and Jesus Montero in their four-player offer, Cleveland came back and said Davis or Ramirez or Font needs to be in the conversation to stay in the game?"
LOL! Not happening. Hughes and Montero are untouchables. If the Indians asked for them, Cashman would hang up.
Posted by: V | June 19, 2008 at 08:59 AM
Yeah, sure. Because that 90 mph fastball of Hughes should dominate major league hitters for the next 20 years.
And who the hell is Montero besides another likely Yankee AAAA hype job?
As an aside; why do many blogs used Typekey when it so clearly blows? Dierkes, you have asked before about suggestions to make your site better. How about this one; replace Typekey.
