« Cafardo's Latest: Buyers & Sellers | Main | Rays Promote Price to Double A »
Roch Kubatko of the Baltimore Sun informs us that the Orioles have designated infielder Freddie Bynum for assignment. The move doesn't come as much of a surprise. Bynum, 28, had posted an underwhelming line of .192/.238./.242 in 99 ABs for the O's this season.
Baltimore has recalled RHP Ryan Bukvich in his place. Bukvich, 30, was 4-1 at AAA Norfolk with a 3.89 ERA in 34.2 IP. Oscar Salazar will take over Bynum's role of backing up Alex Cintron at shortstop.

It's about time. Bynum is clearly not even a poor major league hitter, and his defense is steady but unspectacular. Cintron is a much better hitter and is not that much worse defensively. There have been some talk-radio rumblings lately about moving Mora to SS, Huff to 3B, Payton to LF and Scott to fulltime DH if the Orioles are still in the wild card hunt in a month.
This year it has been fun to be an Orioles fan for the first time in a long time. Still, we need to go 4-10 over the next two weeks so that the Orioles won't put the rebuilding process on hold. Sherill needs to go NOW while he's still got high value. If Roberts can be moved for a large haul fine, but I'd like to keep him, they've got nothing behind him at any minor league level, and maybe he sticks around at the end of his contract now.

Scott has played well defensively, he won't win a gold glove, but he makes the plays that he should.

Not to worry Freddie, as soon as you clear waivers Dusty will give you a job. He likes fast guys who can't get on base or do anything else particularly well.
