« Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Sabathia | Main | Nationals Close To Signing Cristian Guzman? »
12:37pm: Ken Rosenthal says the O's "have engaged in substantive conversations" to acquire Lopez. The likely return: just a marginal prospect.
9:49am: According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles have intensified their hunt for a starting shortstop.
Zrebiec runs through some options and suggests Felipe Lopez would make sense. The O's have scouted him before. Jim Bowden's asking price shouldn't be too high - Lopez becomes a free agent after the season and hasn't hit well for years.
Here's a look at our shortstop market post. One player I omitted from there who has been connected to the Orioles in the past is Juan Uribe.

Tim,
What about JJ Hardy? Brewers should move Hall to SS then and promote Escobar to AAA with him taking over soon.

Peralta and one other player in the Indians' system not named Grady Sizemore or Fausto Carmona for Brian Roberts.

Oh please, oh please, oh please, oh please take Flop. He might just need a change in scenery, but his lake of caring, effort, and hustle has the fan base her in DC livid.

I would think you would have to throw Khalil Greene into the mix. he has made it clear he would like to be back on the east coast to be near his ailing father.
Not sure what the Pads could drag out of the O's for Greene, but he falls into the "needs a change of scenery" category also.

If we did that then we would have a hole at 2B. I wonder if Jack Wilson or K. Greene will be available soon? Or if we get another stop gap and try to sign Cabrera or Furcal in the offseason.

To get Juan Uribe out of Chicago, I would drive him to the airport and buy him a plane ticket to Baltimore.

"Jim Bowden's asking price shouldn't be too high"
Just because it shouldn't be doesn't mean it won't be. As a Nats fan, I'm even appalled at how much he asks for some guys. I bet he'll ask for Matt Wieters for Lopez. No wonder half the league refuses to deal with this idiot.

I think barmes would be a good player to look at. With all the good the o's have done this year adding a loser like felipe lopez or uribe will just set us back again.

Eckstein?
He's hitting .320 with a .400+OBP in June and Gaston looks like he has no desire to play him.

I left Julio Lugo out by the curb. First come, first serve.

Can't hit, can't field, can't throw = can't play.
Not that Scutaro or McDonald are on fire.

Can't hit?
Oh okay.

Eckstein's career OPS is below Lugo's, and he's too streaky to really point to 47 ABs in June and herald his success. His three-year splits for June are .309/.366/.373 (.739 OPS over 236 ABs). Not bad. But his three-year splits for July are .233/.280/.282 (.562 OPS over 266 ABs). Putrid.
Which Eckstein are you getting? Closer to June than July, based on his career lines, but his production is still below league-average. His lack of slugging is really what diminishes his value as a hitter and puts him into 2006-2008 Lugo territory.

Yup, can't hit.
I die a little inside everytime I look and see that David Eckstein and Julio Lugo have the same career OPS+.
4 years/36 million dollars. Jesus Theo.

eckstein sucks defensively, doesnt get on base enough for a leadoff guy, and has absolutely no power. having said that the value in eckstein is his hustle and attitude. watching detroit over the weekend i wanted to puke watching guys like ordonez and cabrera walking to first when they hit a grounder. in st louis we like guys that hustle and thats why we liked eckstein. im glad we didnt pay him lugo money like he wanted but that one year 4.5 million he got would have been great. too bad once he realized he wasnt getting the big contract the cards had already moved on. i wish eckstein well and i wouldnt even rule out a return to st louis next year. why not? hes more valuable to the team than izturis thats for sure.
