« Mariners Fire McLaren | Main | Crisp-Cubs Chatter Debunked »
According to Ken Rosenthal, the Rays have signed their #1 overall pick, high school shortstop Tim Beckham, for $6.15MM. With Beckham setting the stage, perhaps more top picks will get deals done soon.
The Rays just have an embarrassment of riches at this point. They are positioned for a long, long run of excellence.

First! It is sad that Pedro Alvarez will probably get more than Beckham.

Why is it sad? Alvarez is a better player with a longer track record.
And enough with slobbering over Tampa's system. It's good, but many systems perceived as great have underachieved.
Posted by: SBE | June 19, 2008 at 02:00 PM
They should get a great player while they have the chance.
Posted by: gogopalehose | June 19, 2008 at 02:04 PM
Sorry dude but it's not just their system that deserves "slobbering."
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | June 19, 2008 at 02:10 PM
Alvarez didn't really impress this year. Not to mention that his ceiling is considerably lower.
Posted by: oxfrat1665 | June 19, 2008 at 02:38 PM
opens up the possibilty of moving Brignac for a right fielder or a long-term bull-pen option. Morlan appears to be hurt as he got crushed in 6 innings of double-a and has not pitched for a while...anyone know what happend there?

"Alvarez didn't really impress this year. Not to mention that his ceiling is considerably lower."
That is just flat out untrue.

Completely wrong.

Alvarez won't give you elite power and will take up a corner infield spot. While Beckham will have the ability to give you flexibility in where you play him.
Posted by: oxfrat1665 | June 19, 2008 at 02:49 PM
what did mlb 'recommend' them give him based on the slotting system?
Btw, i miss the video mailbags. Can you bring them back?
Posted by: Raf821 | June 19, 2008 at 02:49 PM
A company was producing the mailbags for free, so I tried it out for a bit. But they're not able to do that anymore. I am thinking about getting normal mailbags going again...I can answer more questions.

Thanks for the quick response

Umm...Tim? What else deserves slobbering. Just a bit concerned.
BTW- Alvarez won't give you elite power? Where did you get that dude. I think 35-40 HR projection is 'elite.' You're not particularly well informed are you?
Also, TB would be foolish to trade Brignac. Why move a kid as young and talented as is Brignac when he's performing admirably at AAA and Beckham is probably three years off, at least? Doesn't make sense. This wasn't a need pick; otherwise it would've been Posey. They chose Beckham for his upside. You don't go making moves based on an upside pick.
Posted by: milehigh78 | June 19, 2008 at 03:10 PM
There are a lot of people who think Beckham is actually a safer bet to reach his upside, but Alvarez has a higher ceiling because of his power.
I think if the Rays call up Price in August, and then move Sonnanstine or Jackson to the bullpen, probably Jackson, it would be like a trade for a starter and a relief pitcher. Then all they would need is one outfielder and they would be going into the playoffs fully armored and weaponed.
Brignac could probably be the object of any trade the Rays would want to make.

Scott Kazmir
Evan Longoria
David Price
James Shields
Matt Garza
Wade Davis
Jake McGee
Jeremy Hellickson
Reid Brignac
Carl Crawford
BJ Upton
Tim Beckham
Edwin Jackson (on talent alone)
Ryan Royster
Desmond Jennings
Andy Sonnanstine
Kyle Lobstein
DJ Jones
Heath Rollins
James Houser
Jeff Niemann
Eduardo Morlan
Juan Salas
Mitch Talbot
What don't you get, SBE?! That's absurd...and I'm sure I missed a few. As an O's fan, I'm terrified of this team's future. It was bad enough having the Yanks and Sox in division!
As for my O's: wonder what this means in terms of Matusz signing on the dotted line? Hope its soon, so we can concentrate on trying to sign the upside guys we took later (Bundy, Landers, Martin) and Xavier Avery. Love that we already signed Hoes. I'm totally biased, but I've got a feeling kid is going to be special; much more so than Avery. Reminds me a little of BJ Upton.

Okay Okay I know the Rays have a great farm system. Does anyone else feel like, who wouldn't have a great farm system after having top ten picks the last eight or so years. Being the first franchise to have repeated number one picks. You don't get those draft spots without being horrible so is all the praise deserved?
Posted by: GMUTrkstar | June 19, 2008 at 03:21 PM
Jason Bay and Jack Wilson (Rays bridge between now and Beckham) for Reid Brignac, Wade Davis, and a couple low level prospects.
Posted by: LongSufferingBucsFan | June 19, 2008 at 03:23 PM
That seems like a lot for the Rays to give up. I know Bay's all the rage right now, but I don't really see it.
As for the Rays system...You're right GMU, but that's the past. You still have to give credit where credit is due. Price, Beckham, and Upton were all top picks, but when you hit big on later picks like Davis, McGee, Royster, Brignac, etc. and make smart deals like Kazmir (and to a lesser and more arguable extent, Garza), you're talking about a good scouting team. However their past futility played into their current position, you still have to hit on your picks and the Rays have done so in a major way. I'm not a fan of the team, but I AM a great admirer of the way they've turned their awful history into a bright future. The D'backs and Brewers are two more examples of teams that have really used the draft process to their longterm benefit. I'm just hoping my O's are in the process of doing the same. Considering our purchasing power, I think it would be a great example of small-market player development on a bigger scale. Sadly, the Red Sox and Yankees are doing the same.

I hate being in the AL East. Can we please think about realignment (LOL).
Posted by: milehigh78 | June 19, 2008 at 03:36 PM
milehigh78:
I agree I do give them credit but the amount of slobbering over their farm system should also be accompanied with the price it took to get that way. Horrible ML teams, being sellers annually, no FA's of note, and fans suffering through all that loosing.
I'm not a fan of the Rays either, but the Nats seem to be following the same road except, (this is what ownership says) they will spend on FA's at some point. I'm just hoping the rebuilding doesn't take as long as it did with the Rays.
Btw it's going to be interesting to see the effects down the line. Because with all these star players eventually you will have to rise payroll to continually be good or sell again. Will they keep hitting when they sell and how will they adjust to having highed draft picks? etc, etc...
Posted by: GMUTrkstar | June 19, 2008 at 03:45 PM
milehigh, half the guys you listed aren't even legit top prospects.
Blog posters act as if guys like Davis, McGee, and Brignac are sure thing future superstars, but they just aren't. They're all doing okay, but I'm hardly ready to hand the Rays the AL East crown for the next ten years like everyone else wants to do.
Price is a no-doubt stud, and the combo of Longoria and Upton will be great over the next few years. They'll have a solid rotation, but all those guys simply aren't going to pan out. Look at the Braves of the 90's - they had gobs of pitching prospects every year, and most flamed out. Luckily for them, they traded many at their peak value, and TB will most likely need to do the same.
Posted by: SBE | June 19, 2008 at 03:46 PM
I totally agree with SBE. Bay would probably take at least two of those top prospects and then some. He is an all-star type while the prospects named might not even find success in the majors.

Perhaps, I suppose guns would also be necessary to complete this transaction.

Cause high first rounders always workout great, right? :p
The first rounders are not the only reason why people give the Rays farm system so much love.
Take Niemann, Price and Beckham out of the system and it is still very good.
