Arthur Rhodes Traded To Marlins

1:41pm: MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo takes a look at Hernandez.

9:46am: According to ESPN's Peter Gammons, the Marlins have acquired lefty reliever Arthur Rhodes for 22 year-old righty Gaby Hernandez.  The Fish acquired Hernandez in '05 for Paul Lo Duca.  Hernandez is a solid return for Rhodes, even if he struggled in a Triple A stint this year.  He spent some time on the DL this year with a left intercostal strain.

Rhodes, 38, has a 2.86 ERA in 22 innings this year after missing '07 due to Tommy John surgery.

Don't know anything about Gaby Hernandez...but who would want Rhodes after what he did last night?

This is going to mess with the Bay/Grabow thing, isn't it?

Hernandex is a helluva return for Rhodes.

Nice move by Seattle

Gaby is a decent prospect. I think he has middle of the rotation potential but will probably be a #4 or 5 starter eventually.

Rhodes had a tough night but he still had a great July.

very nice trade for mariners. gaby is a pretty solid pitching prospect. #3 starter. Used to be great prospect, but hasn't really had elite results at any level. been a prospect forever, so it is easy to forget that he's been young for every level. sucking this year, but marlins AAA park is one of best hitter parks in minors.

wonder how this affects talks with the pirates. they don't need grabow now. nice leverage move on their part to reduce the prospects they might have to give up.

I saw Hernandez pitch in spring training and he is good. Don't look at the AAA numbers, the PCL is a beast of a hitting league.

Huh? I don't see how this changes anything for the Manny trade. Marlins were never going to get Grabow anyways, Grabow would go to the Red Sox in any of the rumored versions of the trade.

"...who would want Rhodes after what he did last night?"

Yeah, lets base everything off one appearance! BTW, you evidently didn't watch the game, or see the Pitch Trax on Rhodes.....or you would have seen he had two of those three batters he walked struck out.

This trade helps both teams, Florida gets a solid LHP who is pitching well, Seattle gets a decent prospect who may or may not amount to much.

no it wont mess with the trade...it will probably help now that they can fully concentrate on boston and pittsburgh...along w/ their catching situation I suppose

pitt sends doumit to flo.
they also send grabow, bay and wilson to sox

flo sends hermidia and another prospect to pitt
maybe willingham to bos

boston sends manny to flo 1 prospect to pitt and 1 to flo...lowrie and hansen please...but hell give em hunter, give em whoever they want as long as it gets boston those 3 pieces

manny will sign away so that shouldnt be a prob...I dont what else could be, there are plenty of pieces to work with here and more than enough time.

zs190--Jayson Stark has Grabow going to the Fish, not the Red Sox.

Capper:

"BTW, you evidently didn't watch the game, or see the Pitch Trax on Rhodes.....or you would have seen he had two of those three batters he walked struck out."

I actually watched the whole game. Maybe I should have clarified further. I wasn't referring to him pitching poorly, I was referring to his outburst afterwards.

After watching the WHOLE game, it was fairly obvious that the home plate umpire was making some questionable calls for both teams. If that's the case, a player still needs to exert some self-control and not have to be restrained and taken off the field. His actions to end that inning last night were inexcusable and he should have been ejected.

Tell you what, Lee Pelokoudas is playing this deadline just right. Not expressing any desperation, holding on to tradeable players and demanding the moon in return, without losing sight of the fact that there is a long winter coming up, with plenty of time to move guys.

Nicely played. Hernandez for Rhodes, who we basically picked out of retirement is a nice deal. Should be nice for this Marlins this year too, lots of playoff experience there.

Monsterface, my bad, I guess that's a new version today. Most rumored versions had Grabow to Red Sox though.

Haha... Rhodes last Mariners appearance ended in getting tossed.

Good luck Arthur. I loved seeing you back in a Mariner uniform, and it was pleasant to see you come back from TJ.

I am very excited. It is almost like a free prospect for the Mariners. The M's signed Rhodes to a minor league contract, and nobody expected anything out of him, now we get a good prospect for him.

Thanks Arthur.

Yeah that umpire sucks. At least he got the Ibanez/Bloomquist assist call right on. Maybe Bloomquist should take over for Betancourt @ SS??? Lol...

That was one badass way to leave a Mariners game, Mr. Rhodes. Cheers to you for your successful rehab-stint and trade to FL. Hope everything works out there for you man. If all else fails there, at least you'll will get plenty of sun and free orange juice. And if things don't work out there, Seattle will be laying in wait in case you decide to return AGAIN. Hahaha, that'd be awesome.

PS WTF is up with Griffey Jr. going to CWS?!? Either he expects to play there for half a season or that he will retire in another 5 years in a Mariners uniform.
