Dunn Could Stay, Says Fay

Reds beat writer John Fay says he thinks the Reds will hold on to Adam Dunn and take the draft picks when he leaves as a free agent, because Cincinnati's outfield is so thin that they can't afford to lose Dunn.

With Ryan Freel done for the year, the Reds currently have four healthy outfielders on the roster. That means if they traded Adam Dunn or Ken Griffey Jr. right now, you're looking at Corey Patterson playing every day. That might blow up this blog.

This makes no sense to me. The Reds would only trade Dunn if they were prepared to give up on the season. And since they're four games under .500 and 11 games back of the Cubs, it's probably about time to give up on the season. So, if you're looking ahead to next season, who cares if Patterson is playing everyday in August and September?

Would Dunn command more than the value of a first/supplemental pick?

He is somewhat limited in the field, most AL teams don't have DH spots open so is there really a market for him?

I'm not saying he isn't a worthwhile player, he's probably just more valuable to the Reds as a FA.

i am talking to most of all the cubs fans, THANK GOD Corey Patterson is out of Chicago!

Actually Dunn isn't really a defensive liability over the last two years he's really improved his game in LF. He'll never win any gold gloves and probably will only be average at best but he's not the worst LF in the league by far either.

That said his value to the Reds is far greater then it is to other teams, I think the Reds keep him and extend him.

They have nobody ready to replace him in the minor leagues and any FA you bring in to do the job will most likely cost as much as it would cost to keep Dunn.

Dunn likes it in Cincinnati and would give the Reds a nice discount to stay.

Dunn gets black marks because people are sticking to the he's a horrible fielder and only a DH. Griffey is actually the Reds worst OF this year, and honestly I don't think he'd be a better LF then Dunn at this point.

I agree that he's more valuable to the Reds as a free agent. But this also leaves open the possibility of the Reds resigning Dunn.

Also, if Dunn isn't signed right away, the Reds may be in the dangerous position of offering arbitration to him and hoping he rejects it.

why doesnt it make sense ? not alot of team are interested in dunn and if they are they are not willing to give up anything to get him so why not wait til he walks at the end of the season and take 2 draft picks

I think alot of teams are interested in Dunn, they just aren't willing to pay the asking price for Dunn.

Teams aren't willing to part with two or three top propsects for someone like Dunn, but the Reds also aren't going to give him away for a package that is less then the two picks that he'll likely bring back as well.

Reds should have traded him over the winter. They weren't expected to win this year, he carries a sizeable contract, and now the return for moving him is nothing significant.

In the off-season there were plenty of rumors with good players involved.

In the NLC the Reds were more then good enough to contend for the division at the start of the year. The problem has been Baker and his insistence on hitting the worst hitter on the team in the number 3 slot in the order.

What would it cost for the Mets to get Dunn?

Dunn's value couldn't be much lower. How many teams want a .22x average with average at best defensive skills? Back when he was in A ball in Dayton he could put the ball anywhere, but he gave up on that a long time ago and all he cares about now is hitting home runs. I'd love for the Reds to trade him.

does anybody seeing the red sox possibly going under the radar and going after dunn?

he would be a decent first basemen, outfield, and dh when players need some rest. he could also turn into the hitter he should be with dave mags as his hitting coach. the following year take over for manny.

i see that as a legit destination for dunn and his big left bat to join with drew who is now coming into his own and ortiz. thats a very very threatening middle of the lineup.

and for the rest of this year you have manny, dunn, ortiz and drew. thats a large threat for any team who is making a run at the al east.

the reds are a dire need of some young pitchers and the sox have the guys they might covet for dunn. something like a bowden martinez and crisp or a martinez, hansack, crisp, and cris carter.

if any reds fans care to comment tell me your thoughts

If Corey Patterson starts playing everyday I will quit the Reds forever. There is absolutely ZERO reason that he should still be on the roster. If Dunn is traded then cut Patterson and bring up ANYBODY from the minors to play the outfield. I'd rather have Javier Valentin playing CF everyday than Corey "Automatic Out" Patterson.
