| Pirates Rumors: Nady, Marte, Bay »
By Tim Dierkes [July 18, 2008 at 10:05am CST]
SI.com's Jon Heyman has a new column up.
- Given Richie Sexson's expected part-time role, the Yankees are in the market for an everyday outfielder to replace Hideki Matsui's bat. Barry Bonds is not under consideration. Heyman tosses out names such as Matt Holliday, Xavier Nady, Jason Bay, and Adam Dunn, while noting that the price on most is too high (the Pirates deny this).
- Heyman is still saying the Cardinals will consider trading Colby Rasmus, despite various denials.
- The Yanks are also looking to add a #3-4 starter type. Here's a look at the market.
- Manny Ramirez probably isn't going to get what he wants - free agency, an extension, or a trade.
- The Nationals are supporting GM Jim Bowden despite his recent problems. Heyman reported rumblings last month that Bowden "could be in trouble."
- Despite the Marlins' interest, the Tigers are unlikely to trade Ivan Rodriguez. Jon Paul Morosi agrees, while noting that Pudge's salary might be too high for Florida anyway.
I heard a rumor (I think it was a post in the comments on this website) that Manny fired Boras; can anybody verify that? If so, I can definitely see him getting that extension that Jon Heyman says he probably won't get. If Boras hasn't gone anywhere, it's almost assured that he'll value Manny much higher than Theo does. I see the team exercising the option for next year (and, possibly, the year after depending on next year's performance) but I just can't see an extension authored by the same guy who worked the Zito deal.

Come one Yanks, how about a huge deal with the Reds for Dunn and Arroyo...?
Posted by: redhawk61 | July 18, 2008 at 10:40 AM
As a Reds fan I would want Hughes involved along with two other quality prospects at least one of them being a top 5 guy.
Dunn is going to be a A level FA so he'll be worth two draft picks and while Arroyo is more a dump the Blanton deal did put some value on him. I think Arroyo and Blanton are similar once you factor in everything.
Blanton pitchers park/solid defense.
Arroyo hitters park/near bottom defense.

Arroyo is trash, Phil Hughes alone is too much for Dunn/Arroyo. You want another top 5 prospect in addition to that?
You are delusional my friend.
Do you see the type of players top prospects command? Not Bronson Arroyo...

Would Hughes/Kennedy, Austin Jackson, and Jesus Montero bet too much to ask for
Posted by: redhawk61 | July 18, 2008 at 11:07 AM
but I would be just fine personally with Jackson, Montero, plus a lower level arm cause I know asking for Hughes/Kennedy would be a waste of tie unless the Yanks got desperate

You guys are fools. Why would the Yankees trade their top pitching, outfield and catching prospects? They wouldn't trade Hughes for Santana but all of a sudden they'll do it Arroyo and Dunn, yeah, that makes sense.
Posted by: Ol_Dirtay | July 18, 2008 at 11:12 AM
Jackson is probably off limits, it appears the Yanks see him as their 2009 center fielder. Before anyone jumps down my throat, I read that somewhere it isn't my opinion.
Replace Arroyo with Harang and you might spark some interest..

Can someone explain to me why anybody would be standing behind Jim Bowden at this point? I mean, the major league team has the worst record in baseball and the Majors' worst run differential by 25 runs, their minor league system is largely bereft of talent, and now it's emerged that they're part of a scandal that might help to keep them awful for many years to come. But no, they'd never considering firing the man who presided over all of this. Really?

I agree w/ Ol Dirtay. The Yanks held out on the Santana deal and haven't gotten anything out of Hughes this year. To trade him away now for ARROYO would be like throwing in the towel. This kid may be great someday; the Yanks don't roll like that anymore.

Manny firing Boras rumor came from Buster Olney recently.

Why would the Reds deal Dunn for junk when they can either resign him or get two very high draft picks for him. That is the offer that you have to beat. I also hate dealing for Yankee prospects because the East Coast media generally talks them up to be far better then they actually are about 75% of the time. Plus Cashman doesn't deal the truely good ones.
If I couldn't get Hughes and another top five prospect for Dunn I would keep him to either resign or let him walk for the picks.
Arroyo is garbage, but Blanton who is just as much garbage just went for a decent package of prospects.
You'll get crap for Arroyo if you deal him now just the same as you would if you dealt him in the off-season.
As for Harang if he's thrown in I want Joba, Kennedy and Hughes.
Ace caliber pitchers that sign below market value contracts to stay in Cincinnati are extremely rare.
Posted by: schellis | July 18, 2008 at 12:00 PM
Joba, Kennedy and Hughes!? Wow. Do you realize how valuable Joba is?
Harang is a great and underrated pitcher, but Joba is great, cheap, and under control for lots of years.

Despite Heyman's assertion that Bonds is not under consideration by the Yankees, I predict he will be signed before the trading deadline. There's an update from the controversial post from yesterday at MLBNewsOnline.com. I would post the link myself, but Tim took it down when I did it yesterday, so go there for yourselves if you feel like seeing what they have to say.

By the way, I am in NO WAY affiliated with MLBNewsOnline.com. I just like reading rumors from all kinds of sources, which is part of the fun of coming to this site too. We'll see if Tim or The Bronx Bomber is right about Bonds in 2 weeks.

Alright heres what I think will go down IF ANYTHING. I think that the Yankees are going to go after Matt Holliday. I think if the Pirates were offering up thier players at a more reasonable price a deal would have been done with someone by now. So the Yankees will say screw it and go for the best of the bunch and try to package some prospects together. Obviously if the price for Nady, and Bay is crazy then they should at least get their value and go after Holliday. With that said I think they will avoid packaging Hughes, and Joba which will hurt negotiations.
Manny is staying and thats FINAL.
Why are the Yankees looking for more mediocre pitching dont they have enough with Ponson, and Rasner? I think if Chacon is still available they should look into him.

well first of all we all know or at least should know that joba and hughes r going nowehre there staying wit the yanks the yankees will never trade them maybe kennedy they will trade thts possible but i would love to see the yankees go out and get a front line starting pitcher and out fielder but i look for them to go after holliday and funtes first then get arroyo

"Heyman is still saying the Cardinals will consider trading Colby Rasmus, despite various denials."
Why? and For Who?
Posted by: Redbirdfan | July 18, 2008 at 01:28 PM
Yankees get Holliday for Kennedy, tobata, and Romine
Is this too much maybe throw in Fuentes from the Rocks and Eric Duncan from the Yanks
Posted by: yankees2727 | July 18, 2008 at 01:34 PM
I think the ideal situation for the Yankees is getting Duchscherer for Horne, Marquez and Angelini, maybe. Then getting Holliday and Fuentes for Hawkins, Gerrit Cole, Melky, and Cody Ehlers. Then move Gardner to center in place of Melky. Release Sexson, put Damon at DH.
Posted by: yanks26ngoin | July 18, 2008 at 03:55 PM
Nobody wants Hawkins he has zero trade value Cole hasn't signed yet Melky sucks and is an average center fielder at best Cody Ehlers is 26 and not reaaly a good prospect. This wouldn't get you Holliday much less him and Fuentes.
You just proposed to take away a perrenial allstar and give them nothing in return
Posted by: willie randolph sucks | July 18, 2008 at 04:12 PM
melky is a great player he is just slumping this year and rockies want pitching they have enough outfield
Posted by: yankeefanbriccio13 | July 18, 2008 at 04:26 PM
The Rockies do need pitching Phil Hughes Ian Kennedy but the Yankees won't give them up so they will not get Holliday.
