« Rosenthal's Latest: Sabathia, Burnett, Fuentes, Guillen | Main | More On Harden, Sabathia Trades »

La Russa Pushing For Additions

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak does not want to make a reactionary move to counter the recent CC Sabathia and Rich Harden trades.  He's suggested that the returns of Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright would match those deals.

Manager Tony La Russa doesn't agree, and he suggested publicly that Mozeliak needs to improve the club.  The needs: a bat to protect Albert Pujols, a lefty reliever, and starting pitching (apparently in that order).  Mozeliak responded to La Russa's comments, saying that he doesn't want to make a move that could hurt the team two to four years in the future.

As always, Viva El Birdos does a fine job dissecting the possibilities.  Larry Borowsky suggests several names he'd like to see: Milton Bradley, Ryan Spilborghs, Rich Aurilia, Randy Wolf, and A.J. Burnett.  Aurilia, Wolf, and Burnett are the most likely to be traded, in my opinion.  On the lefty reliever front, the Cards are one of nine teams linked to Brian Fuentes.

What about Mark Grudzlianek at 2nd, a lefty reliever, a power bat to go behind Albert, and a Starting pitcher.

Jose Guillen, Zach Greinke, Grudzy. We can Trade Ludwick, Reyes, and Bryan Anderson and one of our AAA Starters.

that MIGHT get you Greinke, if youre lucky

Julio Lugo, Javier Lopez, and Charlie Zink. You don't have to give us anything back. Just enjoy.

We can trade our entire AA team too.

might be a good website but the guy that wrote that article is an idiot if he thinks milton bradley wont be a TYPE A or Even TYPE B free agent. His proposal of Chris Duncan and Anthony Reyes for him intrigues me though even though Duncan might not have a spot here.

Larry is not an idiot, but I do agree that Bradley looks to be a Type A.

He was using the 2006-07 stats:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/nl/2007-10-31-elias-rankings-complete_N.htm

So if you basically replace his '06 numbers with his '08 numbers, he's well on his way to Type A classification.

we will give you Adam Kennedy, Mark Mulder, and a bag of big league chew.

Milton's charachter would come into question, he doesn't seem like a LaRussa guy. With Rolen and LaRussa's relationship, I certainly don't Bradley is a good fit in STL.

With Mulder only lasting 1/3 of an inning they may lean to a pitcher. As a Cub fan that scares me. The Cardinals almost always seem to get a pitcher who has great talent but mediorcre results and make him into a successful pitcher. I could see Dave Duncan getting either Burnett or Wolf to reach their potential and pitch as well as Harden or Sabathia down the stretch.

re: Lugo/Lopez/Zink

we'd take it. in a heartbeat.

Did I see a Cards fan actually suggest trading Ludwick? Hmm...

As a Cubs fan, I might literally pee my pants if they could pull of trades for Bradley and Burnett. I think one of those two makes a big impact by itself. I do agree with LaRussa though, I think they have to make some kind of move. Fuentes helps, but they need something of more impact than that.

I really think that two of Brendan Ryan, Chris Duncan, and Anthony Reyes gets you Burnett. You could probably go Reyes for Wolf straight up, no? Duncan for Wolf?

Wolf seems exactly like the pitcher that Duncan and Cards management go after...but they had past interest in Burnett as well.

What bats are available that the Cards could actually use where they don't have the position filled? I guess LF, SS, and 2nd base? I don't think you are going to find a bat at SS or 2nd to protect Pujols...so that leave us LF.

If LaRussa had his way, it would be Barry Bonds. How crazy would the Central be at that point??? Won't happen though, St. Louis would riot.

Do you think La Russa gave Mozeliak a heads up with an evil grin or laugh just before throwing him under the bus, or did he do it without warning?

The Cards are not going to compete. They are primed for a 2nd half collapse. Trading away future pieces for this year will come back to bite them.

That's exactly what makes Beane a great GM. He realizes that even though his A's have a shot to win this year the odds are against that. So, instead of buying at the cost of the '09 and '10 team he sells high on Harden and brings in players to help his organization down the road.

Too many teams can't properly evaluate talent and make rash decisions that hurt them for years to come.

Yeah, Lugo, Lopez, and Zink.
Plus cash.
To St. Louis.

For
Nothing.

Anoter team well suited for AJ Burnett is Texas, which can sniff contention and has a great offense and horrible pitching, and lots of good prospects at SS and C they could cough up.

alright guys first thing about the cards not competing. screw that. i was convinced the cards would suck in the offseason but no more. this team is mentally tough. if there was just a little more talent and a little more health they would win a little more games. if izzy didnt have a mental breakdown for a month we would have the same record as the cubs.

and what this about trading ludwick? thats not happening. hes cheap and already sort of developed. hes like 29 with 4 more years of team control.

i like the idea of trading duncan and making skip the 4th outfielder. our 4th outfielder is just like a starter anyways. then we get holliday and fuentes from colorado. give up duncan, reyes, anderson, and another pitcher like this garcia that is about to be showcased. thats a lot of talent but nothing that really would hurt the cards long term. on the other hand duncan and reyes might have success somewhere else and anderson and garcia r good prospects so it seems fair for colorado.

If they really wanted a pitcher and a lefty reliever, why not trade for the Jay's Burnett and Brian Tallet.

Burnett under Duncan would blossom into an ace and Tallet has been murder on lefty's for the last two seasons. This year he has been used for setup and can work multiple innings.

With the emergence of Jesse Carlson Tallet is kind of a nice luxury on a losing team.

i had never heard of tallet but looking at his numbers he looks great. he seems to be getting better by the year. i think that package would be less mainly because holliday is a much more sure thing than burnett, eventhough burnett should be good for us. i think reyes and anderson would be fair for those two, but ive been told by jays fans that they have good catching prospects. i know there are a lot of teams that would really like a good young catcher im just not sure if the jays r one.

We need Matt Holiday and Brian Fuentes. Get rid of Barton, Rasmus, Brenden Ryan, Mather and Perez. Barton and Mather would do great in Colorado it's a hitters ballpark. And if we resign Ank,Shu,Dunk and Ludwick then what would we need Rasmus for plus he is a lefty we need a big Right handed bat.

Starting Lineup

RF:Shumaker
CF:Ludwick or Ankiel
1st:Pujols
LF:Holiday
3rd:Glaus
SS:Izturis
C:Molina
"pitcher"
2nd:Miles or Kennedy

and you can even through Dunk in there every now and then and we could maybe keep Brenden Ryan if we don't trade him

see we do not need any of these players: Milton Bradley, Ryan Spilborghs, Rich Aurilia, Randy Wolf, and A.J. Burnett or Jose Guillen, Zach Greinke, Grudzy

I like Matt Holliday on this team. That's one option, or they could not risk anything and sign Barry Bonds.

You will not even sniff Matt Holliday without entering the conversation with Rasmus AND Anderson.

I wonder if Reyes, Rasmus, and Anderson would get you Holliday and Fuentes? Probably not...

there will be no rasmus trade guys. he is the definition of untouchable. i dont think holliday has a huge trade value. hes really good but hes already expensive and a free agent after next year. i thikn that package of anderson/reyes/duncan/garcia should be enough. anderson has real value and garcia is well liked. we really wouldnt want to get rid of garcia at all but i think we might be showing him off to other teams. fuentes is also a free agent, eventhough people say they want a lot for him alone.

Completely disagree Joel. I think they hang up the second Rasmus isn't involved.

Anderson would be a good trade too. i think Anderson,Rasmus,Mather,Reyes and Barton. i really want to see Barton go he is a bum and just a real buzz killer but he hit very good in Colorado last time we were there.I think we would resign Holliday at the end of the season just because of the need for back up behind Albert. and all of you have to admit Anderson,Brenden Ryan,Rasmus none of these guys are threats behind Albert.
we dont need Anderson because we have Molina, Dont need Rasmus we have Ankiel. and if we ever let Skip, or Lud go this team is going to really be going down hill fast. You gotta feel sorry for Albert too because he never really gets good pitches anymore i mean besides Albert would you be afraid of the lineup we have? If its not Holliday we need a big name and a big bat i wish the Owners would quit putting so much money into there pocket and put it back into our team.

@bjsguess
Moneyball is great and all, but Billy Beane = ZERO Pennants/ZERO World Series. The Oakland A's are the St Louis Blues of MLB.

@Eric
What are you, 12? The future of the Cardinals outfield is a bunch of overachieving guys pushing 30, not a 21-yr old who is untradeable?

seamusiv: I am sorry but 30 isn't old. as long as these guys can play then they can be resigned are you kidding do you actually think anyone should be afraid of Rasmus? If you don't want to see Ludwick,Duck,Ankiel, And shu resigned then your an idiot. What do you want us to do sit around and bring up young guys and end up like the pirates? we could win a few more championships if we can get Holliday and resign him for a few years. Anderson can't be used in the future because of Molina and we won't use him to back up and the kid has no power. Rasmus won't come up till Ank is gone and i swear to god Rasmus has nothing on Ankiel. Mather isnt impressive Ludwick and Shu are much better and Holliday is better then rasmus, anderson, mather and barton combined and if they dont go out and use these guys to get a big name then use them to get pitching because honestly when you have a 10-4 lead to the pirates in the 7th inning and still lose you have problems so quite your wining about the future the future will be fine. And if the cards had made big deals and put money into the team instead of there owners pockets then we wouldn't even have to worrie about giving up the young guy's. so idiot it has nothing to do with age it has everything to do with who can get the job done and none of these young guys can get it done so our future isn't looking to bright.

and next time you try to insult my intelligence think twice because apparently i know more about this team then you do.

The cardinals need to FIRE Mozeliak. He ruined the team. and if he is stupid enough to think that the cardinals shouldnt make a move, he is really a moron.

The cardinals need to keep Reyes. He is a valuable player and his stats drastically lower his selling price. He should stay on the team and improve then he will be an important pitcher in the rotation.

Also in the Rotation the cardinals should trade Mulder for Jon Garland if Mulder will be able to play soon.

As for the bullpen Brian Fuentes sounds perfect.

As for Bats. This would be a great trade Skip Schumaker for Jim Edmonds. Jimmy is having a much better year and Schumaker is taking up a spot in the order wher Izturis can do much better (leadoff). Schumaker also needs some help with fielding. Ankiel would move to RF(his natural position) and Edmonds would be CF.

Another good trade is Ryan Ludwick(or Chris Duncan) and maybe some other guys for Brian Giles. Giles is a Great bat this year and and help in the field too.
